Abbott and Costello all in one set on single-sided DVDs
It is a shame that it seems this holiday season so many studios are just double-dipping previously released material. Abbott and Costello are probably worthwhile purchases because, as someone else has already pointed out, the previous collections were on double-sided discs. However, this does seem to hurt the true fan who bought those double-sided disc collections by making them purchase the same films yet again in order to get something that will last long term. The following is the press release for this set, which indicates that 1943's "It Ain't Hay" will be the only film in this set that is a new release.DISC 1:One Night in the Tropics (1940) - Bud and Lou get mixed up in a "Love Insurance" scheme.Buck Privates (1941)- The duo accidentally enlists in the U.S. Army to avoid getting arrestedBONUS FEATURES:Commentary with Film Historians Bob Furmanek and Ron Palumbo (Buck Privates)Production NotesTheatrical TrailerDISC...

Defending Universal - Don't Listen to Naysayers!
A lot of people who are trashing Universal about this excellent release simply don't know what they're talking about:1.) For starters, you have to know that when Universal originally released their other 4 volumes of Abbott & Costello on DVD, the movie IT AIN'T HAY was unable to be included due to rights issues and so it was not able to be included. Now this problem has been rectified.2.) At the time of the other 4 Volumes of A&C, Universal was foolishly trying out a double-sided DVD technology called "DVD-18". As a result, many people who bought the old DVDs complained of all sorts of random issues like skipping and picture freezing. So if there is ever a bone to pick with Universal, it was because they were experimenting with those earlier DVD-18s. This NEW SET is much more reliable and durable, since it's going to be issued in tried-and-true "DVD-9" single-sided format, which is much better quality all around.3.) Somebody complained that there...

A great collection, but...
For Abbott and Costello fanatics, this is a great collection of the 28 movies the team made for their home studio, Universal. That said, however, there are some important factors (at least they're important to me) that prevent me from giving this set a full five-star rating.First of all, I have to agree with all of you who feel disrespected by Universal's lack of marketing etiquette. It's bad enough that many devoted A&C fans who purchased those previous Franchise Collection volumes now feel like fools for loyally supporting those releases, but they can't even obtain the previously unavailable IT AIN'T HAY (1943) without having to purchase the other 27 movies all over again. Universal certainly hasn't shown any reluctance in re-releasing the same basic material over and over again (the 75th Anniversary Edition of DRACULA, the 75th Anniversary Edition of FRANKENSTEIN, etc.), so why not release a separate, single-disc edition of IT AIN'T HAY? Or a smaller 3-disc, 6-film set,...

Worthy of More Than 5 Stars...
I just can't get enough of Abbott and Costello!I waited for quite a few years for ANY Abbott and Costello movies to hit DVD. There were very few in print. It was frustrating.Well, the wait paid off big time. The first two sets were incredible. Universal has gone the extra mile and these sets are winners on so many levels. Each set thus far includes 8 HIGH QUALITY films for under $20!When I say HIGH QUALITY, I'm not just talking about the quality of the prints, which is very high, but the movies themselves are not lost turkeys. These are the truly all classics, and this set includes some of the great Universal Monster tie-ins, which were previously sold individually for more than the price of this set of 8!Based upon the track record for classic movies going out of print, I suggest you buy them while they are still in this format.

Irresistible and Charming; They always bring out a smile
This set is as solid a value as Volume One, perhaps more so. There are more weak films in this package than in the first volume but the strongest films included are among the pair's best. The transfers, once again are excellent. Because the material is newer the audio quality is better. This should be a must for all fans of Bud and Lou.Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein ****This is (without a doubt) one of their best features. Between the presence of the full line of Universal Studio's famous monsters and the duo in top form there's hardly a moment in this film that doesn't work. The film features one of their strongest takes on the "moving candle" routine. The interplay between the pair while they read the about the legends of the monsters is fabulous. Lou's scene in the Monster's lap is not to be missed.Mexican Hayride ***This is a bit off the beaten track for Bud and Lou. It's one of the few times that Bud played somebody who was...

Abbott & Costello Movie Collection Vol. 1
This is great if you are a fan of Abbott & Costello. I figuered with 2 discs for 8 of their movies it would be poor quality. I was very surprised to see the excellent quality of the movies on these discs. Very Very Good. Worth every penny.

Good Old Fashioned Comedy
When I was growing up, Sunday morning routine was going to church, then watching Abbott & Costello. I wanted my children to experience this pair, so they could see how funny simple comedy is without the vulgarities or sexual innuendo. They still crack me up, and I was happy to see my kids splitting their sides with laughter, just like I used to do when I was their ages. This is a great deal, to get 8 movies at this price, so I got all 3 volumes. DVD's work fine. They fit 2 movies on each side, and each movie has Production Notes in the menu, so you get a historical appreciation for each film.Because the movies are on both sides of the DVD, they can't print anything on either side, so they printed the disc and side information around the little hole in the center of the DVD (it'll have "Disc A, Side 1", for example). Its a little hard to read, so you need to have enough light and hold it close. The information in the box tells you what movies are on which disc...

CLASSIC COMEDY AT ITS BEST
Some say opportunity only knocks once...well, for those of us who missed THE ABBOTT AND COSTELLO SHOW in its previous DVD releases this is another chance to add all of the 52 episodes to our collection. The shows, digitally remastered, look and sound great and, as one might expect, contain many of the classic routines A&C made famous throughout their careers. For the devoted A&C fan, this is a must have!In addition to the shows on eight discs, this boxed set includes a ninth DVD of special features: "Hey, Abbott" 1978 TV special hosted by Milton Berle, a 1948 short film entitled "10,000 Kids and a Cop," interviews with Chris and Paddy Costello, and "Lou Costello Home Movies: Holidays and Celebrations." There are also a couple of bonus features included amid the shows: a classic routine reel and more Lou Costello home movies at home and in Europe. You will also find four high-quality postcards featuring stills of the comedy duo.The 52 episodes are listed on...

Excellent Value and Great Quality
This collection is well worth the money. First of all, the quality is awesome. I still can not believe all the extras , including the home movies, interviews with Costellos daughters, Milton Berle special and the short film Lou Costello did as a tribute to his son that tragically drowned. The product would have been worth the money ,even without all the extras. These shows are still funny, yes even the second season. The menus are easy to navigate, with the info commerative booklet explaining the discs as well as giving bios on the recurring characters. All in all, this set should be a model as the way dvd sets should be marketed. This is a true gem and many thanks to e1homevideo for perfection. They even threw in postcards of our beloved comedians. Remastered , restored and more than enough extras to keep most 'buffs' happy; This set shall be cherished and other companies can take a lesson from how well this was done.

The Abbott & Costello Show--Their Last Great Bow
Bud Abbott & Lou Costello had a chance to do what no other comedy team could do: Every entertainment venue possible in their day. Being partnered in vaudeville, they quickly climbed the showbiz ladder to Broadway and then Hollywood. They made 36 films between 1941 and 1956; many of which were box office hits during their heyday (1942-1952). They also had a very succesful radio show, made personal appearances, and then in 1951; created their own television show. Many comedy teams were seemingly forced to make movies with sub-plots and bad musical numbers. Laurel & Hardy and Martin & Lewis were forced to play second banana in their own features from time to time. Even though the musical numbers were better in Bud & Lou's feature films, there were many unnecessary sub-plots. Why? Because it was believed that comedians couldn't carry a full 90 minute vehicle. Having been victims of the Hollywood system, when it came time to do things their own way--they created a half-hour...

WHAT A FEAST!!
I purchased this set as I noticed it included my favourite A & C movie `Time of their Lives` which had never been available before on DVD. So to get 7 more movies for a price I would have happily paid for that was a great bonus. The picture and sound quality of all of these films is outstanding and great care has been taken in perfect transfers from excellent, apparently original negative, 35mm material so it is a first class ride throughout. For A & C that is the only way to travel. It seems a shame that some reviewers gripe about a lack of extra and should see it another way. You are buying one movie with 7 first rate features as extras - how about that for value? Remember you are paying less than $1.88 (or around £1) for each of these superb quality movies... I rest my case! All of these series` discs play fine on my multi region players here in the UK. Even the slightest finger mark on a disc or dirty players can cause skipping and freezing...

Never mean spirited or vulgar, just comedy like it was meant to be by two undisputed geniuses of the genre.Buy this set and enjoy A&C all over again. Now all I need is a box set of the A&C show from the 50's woth Hilary, Mr Fields, Mr. Bacciagalupe, Mike the cop and Stinky. As good as the first set, maybe even better.
Some of the situations the Hollywood movie machine contrived as vehicles for their stars show their age, often badly. Many of the "chase" sequences" don't hold up at all. The runaway sailboat sequence in "Here Come the Co-eds" is an example of this. It has its moments. The close up shots of the live actors and the background footage they're superimposed on don't match each other. Details, things like wind moving fabric around, are missing. Often, the "halos" that were left around people when their images were superimposed over stock footage are still present. (It's still not always that easy to get rid of those perfectly even when with a still photograph. Ask someone who's done it.) The problems lie with the special effects. These were the state of the art in their time but are weak by current standards. This list goes on. Archival and stock footage (which was used a lot) is often grainy. Sometimes the resolution of pieces of film being matched is completely different. And so on...

Hilarious Bits From My Favorite Comedy Team!
Abbot & Costello: Funniest Routines Vol 1 is a great collection of classic routines from my favorite comedy team. There is close to an hour and a half of comedy on the disc, and they're the type of bits the whole family can enjoy. There's a wide variety of stuff here, and it all looks great. Two of the bonus features have been colorized, the rest are presented from a great B&W print, that is probably the best one I've seen. The bonus features that are presented in color are the Trailer for "Abbot & Costello Meet Frankenstein" and a Campbell's Soup commercial. Here's hoping for an all out colorized version of A&C Meet Frankenstein! For the curious among you, here's a list of the included routines:-Hole in the Wall-Mustard-The Magic Act Bit-Aspirin-Army Drill-Niagara Falls-Jonah and the Whale-7 X 13 is 28-The Piano Bit-The Lemon Bit-The Dice Game-Who's on First?DVD has truly...
