Product Description

BLOCKS is a small picture book for toddlers. The story of baby's game of blocks with each member of the family has the patterns, the rhythm, and the bright colors toddlers love. An amusing part of the story is that in the baby's game, the only blocks that never automatically fall down are grandpa's.

Before long, baby will be "reading" the story to Mom and Dad. One mother reports, "Long after we put away all Lisa's baby books, she won't give up BLOCKS. She reads it to us all the time." Another says, "Matthew keeps BLOCKS under his pillow. He pretends to read it to us every night at bedtime. He's three."

Add a box of real blocks for a perfect little-person gift. Top to learn more

Really does capture Spenser.
I'm a longtime fan of Smart Pop Books, which has previously published essay collections on such favorite topics as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, James Bond, and Firefly. On Smart Pop's blog, editor-in-chief Leah Wilson muses that our favorite P.I. of letters isn't Smart Pop's "usual fare," but publisher Glenn Yeffeth, "a huge Spenser fan," suggested the tribute. Having written a paper on Spenser once upon grad school, I'm oh-so-glad he did.Not only do I know Spenser, I know the work of almost all the collection's contributors and have chewed the fat with them at least once if not many times. In several cases, the essayist is just the person a fan would want to weigh in on a given topic. For example, Ace Atkins, the Parker estate's choice to write new Spenser novels after Parker's death, reveals how much the Spenser books mean to him, how pervasive their influence on his life. Dennis Lehane, whose Kenzie and Gennaro books evoke his old Boston neighborhood the way Spenser did...

A great addition to the Robert Parker novels!
I didn't realize how much I missed Robert Parker until I picked up a copy of In Pursuit of Spenser, edited by Otto Penzler. It happened while I was checking out the different essays written by other mystery authors about Mr. Parker and his most famous fictional character, Spenser. I came to the profile on Spenser at the end, written by Parker in the first person as Spenser is questioned about who he is and why he's such tough guy. Susan Silverman is sitting at the table as her friend throws questions at Spenser and he answers them with a wry sense of humor and his usual outright honesty. After a couple of lines, I was hooked without even realizing it. I felt at home with myself like I'd just run into a close friend I hadn't seen in years and could now play catch up with. I read the profile of Spenser, smiling to myself, enjoying his and Susan's company once again. You see, they are my friends, and it's always fun to re-encounter the bantering that goes on between the two of...

A fitting memorial
Robert Parker was one of my all-time favorite authors. I have read all of his books and have re-read most of them several times over. I bought this book because my mom, who is also a big Robert Parker fan, and I often discuss Parker's work in terms of his wit, his social commentary, and his amazing ability to portray complex emotions with sparse prose. I really liked that embedded in the wonderful anecdotes of meeting Mr. Parker or discovering Spenser for the first time, several of the contributors took the trouble to mention the little foibles and flaws in his narratives and yet did so with undeniable affection both for the man and his work. Those honest acknowledgments made me feel like I was attending the wake of a favorite uncle or best friend and listening to those who loved him honor a life's work that made the world a little bit brighter. Everyone had a different experience of Mr. Parker and his work and I felt the richer for having shared their experiences.

He reminds me a lot of Alge Crumpler, a player with good short-to-intermediate skills in the passing game, red zone production and versatility who helps an offense maintain an unpredictable game plan because he excels in all three phases of his... Another telling facet of Allen’s game is that he was used in pass protection on rollouts or max protect situations because of a less-than-stellar pass blocking line in 2011. He also likes to block, and he would get visibly upset with himself when he did not block to his standards on a play — even a productive one. He diagnoses first- and second-level blocks and consistently gets his hands into the defender’s body while using his strong base to get wide and anchor or drive  that defender. Run blocking is where Allen shines. This agility after the catch combined with his skill for adjusting to the ball after the catch makes Allen a viable option to split away from the formation in addition to using him in-line or on a wing. Unless a defender falls down or the safety/linebacker blows a coverage, Allen will not earn a lot of receptions from release point to point of reception that cover 30 yards or greater. If you are seeking the fantasy football tight end with the highest upside at the position and you are willing to sacrifice a little safety (Dwayne Allen) to get him, Fleener is the more enticing option — if a team with a young, promising...

One of the reasons I wanted to put this quilt top (not planning on quilting it, but you never know) together was so that people wouldn’t feel obligated to go out and buy fabric so they make blocks with the black on white designs to match mine.

Winnipeg police say Allan Frank Crockford , 42, was found injured on a sidewalk on the 600 block of Maryland Avenue at around 12:10 a. m. CT Friday. The wife of a Winnipeg man who was fatally shot on Friday says her husband was buying beer at the time of his death.

Katie, of Katie’s Quilting Corner website, blog and podcast, had some thoughts after doing a Jelly Roll Race quilt. Thomas Knauer also has a very thoughtful and well organized post on copyright, which he posted on April 3, 2012 and updated on April 4, 2012. Here is a quote from Techdirt that I thought was good, even if I am not sure we are flourishing without copyright, “ It’s really a wonderfully rich post, which touches on many aspects of copyright and creativity, and I urge you to read it — along... The Emily Cier-Kate spain ‘issue’ has jumped out of the quilt world and into the Tech world with a blog post on Techdirt. As you know, the Renewed Jelly Roll Race caused me some agony (the artist kind, not the pain kind) and is now almost a forgotten memory. Some of the nation’s most treasured quilts were produced around the middle of the 19th century influenced by quiltmaking in the nation’s third largest city of the time, Baltimore. You can see any number of different Jelly Roll Race quilts if you type that phrase into your favorite search engine. “Quilts in the Baltimore Manner” opens June 9 and will be on view through April 2014 in the Foster and Muriel McCarl Gallery and reflects the strong textile industry and innovative quiltmaking styles of America’s largest seaport of the period 1845... A dozen of these works of art – most created in a distinctive and elaborately conceived appliqued style known as album quilts – are the focus of the newest exhibition at Colonial Williamsburg’s Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum.
