Product Description

Some people buy Uncle Milton's ant farms out of nostalgia, having been ant farmers themselves as kids. Others are charmed by the odd perspective created as the ants build outsize tunnels beneath a replica of a bucolic little farm. But if you're buying this toy on the pretense that it is, as the guidebook says, "a lesson in nature study," beware. The box says you'll see ants dig tunnels, erect bridges, and plan and construct highways and subways. What they dig are tunnels that connect what might loosely be called "chambers." And that's about it. Without a queen, new births, real food to gather, foraging trips, or other ant colonies to tangle with, what you'll purchase are ants that perform in a behavior-stunting environment. You may feel that all this is of no concern so long as the farm provides a slice of childhood wonder. But if you're uneasy with the ant world you set into motion, and Uncle Milton's green farm begins to look surreal instead of jolly, the feeling may pass from you to your kids. --Jeannine Prince has a Master's in Education. This all-time favorite Ant Farm® kit includes an un-breakable 10"x15" plastic see-through case, green frame and stand, sand and certificate for live shipment of ants- takes about two weeks for shipment to arrive via mail. -- Sorry, ants can not be shipped to Hawaii or Tennessee. Pretty cool for us Big Kids
I have my Ant Farm at work (Ironically, I work for Amazon.com), much to horror of some of my office mates. It makes a good discussion piece and its a great way to meet people in the office.Setting up the ant farm is a no brainer. Make sure to get the sand in the display case, put in the starter water when the ants show up (Mine took about 3 weeks, and 100% were alive), and drop in the ants.Below are my ant tips.1) Make sure you stuff the plugs of cotton down into the sand as stated in the instructions. This creates the starter holes for the ants to start digging. Since the cotton plugs are evenly spaced, you will get nice ant tunnels throughout the farm.2) You must have the ants in a tightly regulated temperature enviroment. If you put this guys in an hot enviroment, they will die quickly. Same goes for cold enviroment. If the temperature where you have the ant farm varies to much the ants will die quickly. The office here is about the same comfortable temperature all the...

short lived, yet fascinating, fun
I think you have to view the Ant Farm as a product in three seperate stage.1) You get the ant house and wait for the ants. The delay in receiving the ants is difficult (it made us all "antsy"? ) but we were pleased with how few dead ants there were on arrival. Think of it as a chance to read up on ant behavior....2) The ants arrive and do their thing. Watching them build their tunnels was absolutely fascinating -- for a week. The adults in our house were just as fascinated as the children.3) The decline and fall of an ant empire. After a week, we had a dramatic die off, despite rigerously following the instructions re. feeding, temperature, humidity, etc. Now we have ONE lone ant, wandering the tunnels, who has lived 4 weeks past the life of her companions. Kind of a sad end for a social creature, when you think about it.... Bottom line: If I had known 99% of our ants would die at the end of a week, I would not have invested [the money], but we...

Worth it, if you're careful!
My mother threw mine out when I was young so of course I got another for my son. Sure, you can build your own, but for the small price this is well worth the investment to get one that will work first time. But here are some hints for using the ant farm from one who has learned from experience:1. Be careful putting in the "sand." Follow the instructions very carefully, and make sure to keep the cotton plugs securely in place. Don't "pack" the sand in AT ALL or the sides will spread outward and the farm will leak.2. When you get the ants, make sure to let them "cool off" in the refrigerator for a couple of hours to slow them down before you try to dump them into the farm. They look immobile but as soon as you open the lid of that tiny jar those fiesty little buggers are all over the place! And believe me, they are FAST. Use an earlier-prepared big paper funnel to help get them all in.3. Be very careful when taking off the...

dimensions listed are not correct
this is the first ant farm i have owned... and like anything new i get into, i try to do a lot of research. so i looked around A LOT for the largest size ant farm.. i think the giant uncle milton type is somewhat larger but i wanted to use the gel habitat instead of using soil. so i came across this.. and i was like wow! a great deal and its a nice size...i recieved mine super quick(via fed ex) but even while inside the box.. IT WAS NOT THE DIMENSIONS SPECIFIED. so i hope amazon or someone fixes that soon. the CORRECT DIMENSIONS ARE (of the ant farm itself) 6.5 X 5 X 1.... which in my opinion is a big difference than what is listed. it did come with the gel premade in it though. i think ill just keep it since it would be too much trouble to send it back. i guess if you want a gel habitat ant farm.. its not going to be too large.

we are on our 3rd one
We like the this product. My little scientists were 4 and 6 the first time we got this product and now at ages 6 and 8, we are on our 3rd habitat and my boys still love it. Before ordering it the first time, I had been afraid the ants would escape at some point but the top holds securely and my kids would have to work very hard to pull it off. This is a non-issue. The only tricky part is transferring the ants from the test tube into the gel farm initially. After that, they are in to stay. They are easy pets - we don't have to feed them or clean up after them. They do not stink. I feel very confident in recommending this ant farm for any age of curiosity. The ants begin digging quickly (over the course of hours). My kids like watching them tunnel, as do we! The blue gel is very cool - transparent and very slick. Each time we've gotten them, the ants have lived for several months. I gladly recommend this product. It is a fun bit of activity to add to a home.

Fascinating, organized, and busy: ants are truly remarkable creatures, and Uncle Milton's Original Ant Farm allows you to peer into their zany little world! This set has everything they need to get busy! Ants not included. Top to learn more

Ants cost extra
I just got my ant farm, only to discover that the ants cost an extra $4. That's not a lot, but it adds 33% to the cost. And it seems misleading when the product description says "Includes order form to receive live ants by mail."

The Ants Dropped Like Flies.
The one truly amazing thing about Uncle Milton's Ant Farm was just how quickly the ants died. Perhaps ants just aren't cut out to live in a cheesy plastic enclosure propped up on somebody's bookshelf in a high-rise apartment in Manhattan waiting for a crumb to drop miraculously from the heavens. That's my guess.

My new favorite book!
And I'm not just saying that as an Emmy-winning 40-yr-old comedy writer in Hollywood trying to suck up to a young guy who will be running this place in about six months (how do you do sir?)...Ant Farm is a delightful bruschetta of absurdity served on crackers of keen insight.

Amazing!
I love Simon Rich's sense of humor. His imaginings of what a situation would be like (What a conversation between God and the man who stands with a cardboard sign informing the public the end is near, for example, or what his mother believes runs through his mind when he is home alone at age 15) are just brilliant. Not all the entries are great, but the gems make up for the others. I loved sharing this with my family and friends, and despite age, gender, and frankly taste difference, they all found something to love in ANT FARM. The book goes fast, but you can revisit it again and again. It is well worth buying.

Product Description

In Ant Farm, former Harvard Lampoon president Simon Rich finds humor in some very surprising places. Armed with a sharp eye for the absurd and an overwhelming sense of doom, Rich explores the ridiculousness of our everyday lives. The world, he concludes, is a hopelessly terrifying place–with endless comic potential.

–If your girlfriend gives you some “love coupons” and then breaks up with you, are the coupons still valid?

–What kind of performance pressure does an endangered male panda feel when his captors bring the last remaining female panda to his cage?

–If murderers can get into heaven by accepting Jesus, just how awkward is it when they run into their victims?

Join Simon Rich as he explores the extraordinary and hilarious desperation that resides in ordinary life, from cradle to grave.

Silly Short Stuff
These stories are very very short which is good. If they were any longer they might well result in emotional damage to the reader. Mr. Rich's imagination takes us where few have gone before.I mean what would you do if an angry murderer threatened you with death if you didn't come up with the correct answer to a trigonometry problem (sin2x=2cosinxsinx)? Have you ever thought how difficult it would be to wage war using Swiss army knives? Is it really true that God intervenes to help Orel Hershiser pitch his way to victory? Is it a fact that scientist Stephen Hawking is really a time traveler? Is it possible for ants to dig to freedom from a glass walled ant farm?Do these story topics pique your interest? If so cough up 10 bucks and buy the book. If they leave you cold, well, hey spend the money on a six pack, and have fun that way.

BUY Ant Farm: And Other Desperate Situations

Buy Ants Ant Farm

Anytime you think of buying ant farms , western harvester ants, are the most available species of ants you can find in any science kit store. Once you buy your ant farm from Discover This , you will want to familiarize your ants to their new home. The best ways to familiarize them is by placing a cloth or towel that is black in color at the top of the farm, and leave the ants for few days.   If you are not the type that loves ants, then you can choose to buy sea monkeys.

The kids are thrilled to get started with this, and all have their own predictions about how it will go. We checked out books on ants from the library (both fiction and nonfiction) and got new journals to keep track of the ant farms progress and... We bought an ant farm and have just received our ants in the mail.

They can be used in a science study, conduct non-threatening experiments, can be kept as pets and adults are in love with ant farms the same way their kids do. Observe the ants building their homes, digging tunnels and passageways in the farm. An ant farm consists of several ants that are encircled in a plastic or glass box. You do not have to go anywhere near the ants since you have your own ant farm. Well, if you happen to get an ant farm that has no high wall or lid you should worry less about it. You can use vegetable oil or petroleum jelly to rub on top of the farm. The ant farm has various uses the potentials are nearly endless.

Okay, the first joker who offers to send us a package of ant traps gets a glaring look from me. I wasn't too settled with this idea, but my 11yo dd wants an ant farm. (Drop the ant traps & stop laughing, I meant the ant farm. The unseasonably warm weather we had two weeks ago brought forth some large black ants that had a sleepover on my kitchen table, but I'm done shuddering over that, so I'm ready to consider buying the farm. Just in case you forgot to put them in the fridge to slow them down, Just in case you accidently spill a few because the whole in the farm is smaller than the tube they come in. :) Really, they are no problem I am sure you just don't want any of... :)  I would do this experiment before the experiment with the ant farm this way they can see in real life how they act. I know nothing about ant farms, but I took a quick look at a science tools website and they seem affordable.    I hope you have fun with this I actually enjoyed it more then the ant farm.   It maybe to hot or cold and you may loose more than you wantwd to. Oh, and you may want to get a funnel when you put them in the farm.       If you ever have a problem with Ants a solution of  Water, sugar and Boric acid boiled will make a syrup. I got a buy one get one free. Just make sure you are there to get the ants in the mail when they come.   For fun we would mess with the worker ants.
