Remember It's Baroque, Folks!
In reading other critiques of this extraordinary item, I'm struck by the fact that somebody's obviously not paying attention. These beautiful and plentiful selections are the baroque interpretations of these musical masterpieces....hence the use of harpsichords and other instruments more authentic to the period many of them were actually written. That said, the music, the performances and the quality of the recordings, coupled with the ridiculously low price make this an offering more than worth the price! It may not be for the classical music purists and scholars, who may already have much of this material in their collections, or may find the disconnected placement of the individual pieces off-putting, but for the more casual classical music fan, it's simply divine! ENJOY!

Great Selection - Great Bargain
This is an incredible buy. I enjoy classical music a good deal, and find that a selection like this (that can play literally all day behind me while I work) is a wonderful investment. I get more done, I am happier, and all because of a great selection of classical music that Amazon picked out for me. Unlike one reviewer below, I'd say that most of these selections are quite listenable. They are not all gems, but some of them are, and that's why it is just amazing to find them all together for this price. Yes, the artists are primarily not well known, or Eastern European names that you wouldn't easily recognize, but they are talented, and the music is generally well recorded. Quite an excellent buy.

Composers not listed...however...
Not liking leaving out the composers does not change that this is a wonderful way to spend time and shouldn't hurt the star rating, you should rate the music and then write a caveat. The music is beautiful and because I didn't know the composers of the pieces I liked best, I looked them up and in doing so learned who the composers were and a little history on the piece...which wouldn't have happened if it had listed the composers for me. So rather than a negative, for me it's actually a positive. This is wonderful music at a great price - buy it.p.s. That being said, I would still like to know who the composer's are on the album.

No name pieces
What a shame that no credit is given to the great composers who authored these pieces. This is a new and unfortunate trend that Amazon is following with quite a few of its "exclusive" albums. Please recode at least out of respect if not for copyright reasons.

Thorough, solid textbook
Many have awaited this final volume in the new Norton Music History Series. Manfred Bukofzer's volume in the original series was written in 1947 - clearly, much has been discovered since then.Hill's text is designed to be for upper level music majors, as the writing can become quite dense. The book begins with an introduction of the social and political factors shaping Europe during the Baroque Era. Other chapters cover the birth of opera and monody, new genres of instrumental music, and other subjects, generally switching back in between France, Italy, England, and Germany (Spain and Portugal are also included in a chapter).Great aspects about Hill's book first. The scholarship is excellent, and is as thorough (if not more so) than any other Baroque textbook out there. The Baroque Period in Europe originated in the early 17th century and reached it's peak in the early 18th century. The English word "baroque" is translated from the Italian "barocco", meaning "bizarre". "Passionate" is probably more like it. Johann Sebastian Bach is the most celebrated of the Baroque composers, although George Frederick Handel and Antonio Vivaldi are also famous for their Baroque music.Yo Yo Ma's Simply Baroque (1999) brings the Grammy Award winning master cellist together with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra (Ton Koopman) to perform mostly Bach pieces from the 18th century late Baroque period. Beautiful Baroque
This is simply a beautiful cd. I find myself carried away by the arrangements-just wonderful! I must admit this is my first cd by Yo-Yo Ma. It will not be the last. If this is the kind of quality one can expect from this artist, I am a fan!I have listened to this cd 3/4 times and it still amazes me. I become a part of the music. If you enjoy classical music with arrangements that are intelligent, played with sensitivity, and a joy to experience, buy this cd.

Great album of YO YO Ma's ......as usual he is a master of the instrument.....I have to say , however, that Simply Baroque II was a greater listening pleasure for me simply because the music was more uplifting and in the style of baroque I prefer....but this is also a fine album for Baroque lovers.

Brilliant value for money!
Beautifully and expressively played, with articulation and phrasing as clear as crystal, and a bigger sound than lutes on CDs usually have (these are large instruments, a chitarrone and a 10-course lute). I also found the recording quality excellent, particularly if, as I do, you like a "close-in" sound. This same album is marketed elsewhere under another title and cover at twice the price (I checked the contents track for track: they're identical). I'm not surprised by the rave reviews quoted on the back. If you like baroque lute and want a generous portion (70 minutes), buy this! Why's it so cheap?

This amazingly inexpensive recording isexcellent and beautifully clear. Paul O'Dette issuperb as usual. Here he plays the chitarrone(also called the theorbo): a wonderful,deep-voiced stringed instrument (rather like avery long necked lute). On some pieces heplays the ten-course lute. Mr. O'Dette has avery fine musical ability and he also haswritten knowledgeably about the music in theaccompanying booklet. The music of GiovanniGirolamo Kapsberger is certainly overdue forrevival, as is the sound of these earlierinstruments. This delightful recording iswelcome indeed.
