Humans vs. nature, another fascinating BBC series
This review is based on the UK Blu-Ray release and, so far, there seems to be no reason to believe that the US version will be any different. If you have seen the BBC's superb previous flagship series 'Life', then I can summarize this as being the human version of that series by way of Planet Earth: A collection of exotic and sensational footage of humans, some living in various cities or villages around the world, but most of them at the fringes of civilization, all having to meet nature's challenges using ingenuity, daring and downright unusual or dangerous solutions. This includes dealings with environmental dangers, human extents to find or hunt for food in the most extreme environments, various extreme forms of human dwellings and adaptations, and the many types of relationships between humans and animals ranging from exploitative, to practical survival tactics or pest-control, the religious, the conservationist, etc. The structure of these 8 episodes is modeled...

The Human Planet - The most remarkable species of all.
It was Mark Twain who is usually credited with originating the maxim that "the only two certainties in life are death and taxes" He was wrong since Twain never had the benefit of the wonders of the BBC Natural History Unit. Their certainty appears to be the complete inability to construct a bad series and in achieving the consistant feat of producing the most wonderful and lavish programmes which throughly inform and educate at the same time. This latest series is a variant on a theme since the "Human Planet" looks at us as a species particularly our behaviour in subsistence and fundamentally dangerous environments (with the exception of the last episode "Cities") where humans are most challenged by nature, eco systems or competition with other mammals and animals. The Human Planet is a series packed with what television producers describe as the "gawp factor". It is beautifully filmed and the intriguing "Behind the Lens" segments to every programme show the scale of the...

The DVDs are much more than you saw on TV
After watching it on Discovery, there are three reasons I bought this DVD: 1. It is surprisingly raw for American TV. Normally Americans prefer to watch cute people eat dirty things, rather than watching dirty people eat cute things. Audiences complain when people living in harsh conditions kill whales to survive. Not everyone wants to be confronted with the messier, complicated reality when they can find solace in a simplified television narrative. That this show has the temerity and honesty to require a parental a advisory for "disturbing content and indigenous nudity" instantly wins a place in my heart. 2. This series presents what I believe is our best way forward with the environment. It shows an alternative to our conquer or be conquered conflict with nature. The idea that man can live as part of nature rather than as either as it's master or at its mercy is ultimately the key to our own survival. The key is not to absent ourselves from nature, but...

Natural Educational Dramedy - another great job by the BBC
Over the past two decades, the BBC Natural History Unit has become a prolific documentary factory of the highest order, with ever-improving skills and increasing dedication. Some of their productions are relatively minor, but this is one of their flagships, and you can tell this because they use David Attenborough as the narrator (who is still in top form). The theme for this 10-part series is the challenges of life and how various animals and plants solve them. This includes unusual and extreme food gathering techniques, hunting strategies, surprising evolutionary weapons and defenses, adaptations to harsh environments, mating rituals, and the lengths they go to in order to pick the right breeding partners. Each episode covers this vast topic in specific areas: The first episode is an overview and top-20 hit parade of the upcoming episodes. Each of the ensuing episodes then cover a branch of the animal kingdom, including reptiles, insects, mammals, plants,...

Another Top Notch Effort from BBC/Attenborough
As a frequent watcher of nature programs over the last 30 years, I have to say that this is one of the all time greats. Attenborough docs are always solid and there's no shortage of the usual charm, but the filming techniques have really come to the fore on this effort. There are utterly spectacular moments in each of the episodes. Yes, the overview episode is redundant, but there's very little else to be critical about. One for the ages, this.

Narrators
Ive watched the BBC Attenborough version and the first few episodes of the Discovery Oprah versions and as stated previously, the Attenborough narration is vastly superior. You can feel his passion for the subjects and years of experience expressed in every line. Discovery Channel must be commended for broadcasting the series to a broader audience but the alterations take away from experience. I highly recommend getting this BBC version. With the breathtaking camera work, narration, and score, this is a perfect companion to the Planet Earth series and should be part of any Blu-Ray collection.

"We are all Africans under the skin"
In this excellent BBC TV series Alice Roberts follows in the footsteps of our ancestors, who left Africa and ended up populating the whole world. The TV series is very enjoyable, and there is also an accompanying book which goes into much more detail on the scientific debates. I recommend both the DVD and the book. I first wrote this review in relation to book, but it applies equally to the TV series. Roberts shows how the evidence from bones, artefacts and genes tells us that Homo sapiens (modern humans) evolved in Africa between 200,000 and 150,000 years ago and that all non-African humans throughout the world today are descended from one group of Homo sapiens who left Africa between 85,000 and 65,000 years ago. On her journey Roberts meets people who personify and bring to life many of the debates relating to human evolution. For example, at Pinnacle Point in South Africa she meets one of the archaeologists who have been excavating Blombos Cave. It was...

Great video
An outstanding documentary with great photography, very informative and entertaining. I usually don't like seeing the narrator so much but in this case it added to the value of the overall viewing exprience. One of the few documentaries I could actually watch twice.

Superb investigation of human evolution and migration
I am a collector of well made documentaries and I have to say that The Incredible Human Journey has become one of my most prized possessions. The show approached the topic of human evolution and migration with solid scientific inquiry but also placed the explanations in the context of human experiences that we are familiar with in the modern times.

Not "Planet Earth" - but still amazing!
There will inevitably be comparisons between "Nature's Most Amazing Events" and . While I can't say that this new series is quite as groundbreaking, it is still pretty great and has some amazing footage. As its title suggests, "Nature's Most Amazing Events" focuses on some of the most amazing events in the animal kingdom. I actually like the fact that each episode stays in one location (as opposed to the way jumped around the world). However, I thought it could have gone beyond Africa and North America. I also thought this series had some amazing footage of birds and whales, particularly of birds underwater. Those scenes alone make the series worth buying...

Simply Amazing!
I am a huge fan of Blue Planet and Planet Earth. So when I saw this on the shelf, I snapped it up without any real thought. I went home and put it on right away. I was blown away by the shear genius of the photography. It seriously rivals Planet Earth's photography. It not only has amazing shots, but the stories that are told in each episode, are ones that you don't really see. It shows the life of a polar bear during an Artic Summer, the struggles a salmon endures during its upstream journey, the challenges a pride of lions face when their food migrates away from their territory, and more. This is an amazing product that I reccomend for anyone who loves the Animal Kingdom.

Another gem from the BBC Natural History Unit
If you've seen any of the other HD nature documentaries from BBC (Planet Earth, Life, Nature's Most Amazing Events, etc), you already know what to expect from this series. There is nothing groundbreaking here, just more of the amazing, high-quality, exciting nautre scenes that, frankly, only BBC knows how to deliver. While I wish David Attenborough had narrated the series, simply because no one else has that kind of gravitas, Hugh Quarshie's narration is decent and takes nothing away from the presentation. East Africa had already been pretty well documented before this series. I have also traveled there. And still, in shot after shot, this series showed me things I had never before seen. If you're a fan of high-quality, serious, beautiful nature documentaries, pick this up right away.

Wow -- amazing images, good story
This DVD has the best video images I have ever seen. I viewed this on a 53" Sony Hi Def TV. The images were solid, the color intense and many scenes appeared nearly three dimensional. Over and over again we replayed a section just because of the quality of the image on the screen.

"The producers of Life, Galapagos and Yellowstone bring us The Great Rift. Visible from space, Africa’s Great Rift Valley runs four thousand miles from the Red Sea to the mouth of the Zambezi – a diverse landscape of erupting volcanoes, forest-clad mountains, spectacular valleys, rich grasslands, vast lakes and mighty rivers. Home to the greatest concentration of animals on earth – lions, crocodiles, elephants, hippos and flocks of flamingos – and pastoralists such as the Maasi – this is a land of constant geographical turmoil. It will take you to another world – a world of exotic extremes, where the forces of nature have shaped the landscape and so created a hotbed of evolution. It is the very cradle of mankind." BBC History of World War II Review The contents of this boxed set are up to the usual high standards of the BBC. It will appeal to those wanting to explore less often tackled subjects, like the above-mentioned transformation of the Japanese Army for instance, or the morality of the allied firebombing of German cities, or the reasons behind the intense... It is just that they were not meant to be cobbled together as a set and thus, taken together, serve more as a collection of excellent individual documentaries than a comprehensive history of the Second World War. Those wanting a straightforward, integrated account of the War would do better to look at the multi-award winning 1975 "World at War" series. It is actually a collection of separate, unrelated series (10 series in all) produced by the BBC over a span of some 16 years from 1989 to 2005. It makes for one of the most fascinating documentaries in the set but it is not in the end meant as an account of the Asia-Pacific war. The finest parts here are the documentaries on the Nazis, the Final Solution and the Russo-German war. The two separate series on the Nazis, one examining their rise to power and the other on the Final Solution rank among the finest documentaries to have been made on those subjects. The BBC set presupposes a basic knowledge of the war on the part of the viewer. While the Holocaust was one of the most abominable crimes of the 20th century, devoting 5 hours to it in "Auschwitz: Inside the Nazi State", plus even more in "The Nazis: A Warning From History," meant that the Holocaust accounts for over 1/4 of...

I'm getting more to the point that unless it's part of a series where I have to have all the books, I'm mostly just keeping books that I really like. I think I might start getting some of those Penguin hardbacks you've mentioned as well after I read some more from my e-Reader and see what books I come to love to the point where I want them on my bookshelf. I just don't see myself ever loving an e-reader as much as I love my printed books. But, realistically, e-readers are probably here to stay so I may as well get used to seeing them around, like I had to with iPods and cell phones way back when - and now I have both.
