easy to use, and good bang for your buck
This is a very convenient unit to install and figure out. I like the digital display because you can see the CO levels and can get a sense of any issues by simply glancing at the unit when walking by. I liked that it came with brand name batteries too, when I was looking at my local hardware store some of the units had generic batteries. The reason I bought a Kidde is the built in functionality. I had a smoke alarm of theirs that was acting funny, beeping every 30 seconds, so I pulled it down and right on the back it listed what each beep sequence meant (no having to hunt for a manual, or search online). This unit acts in the same manner, it's even supposed to alert me in 7 years when it is time to replace the unit, how cool is that?

Seems to be a quality product
I did a lot of reading on all the different type of CO1 detectors offered here on Amazon. I chose this model not only for my own home, but also for the customers I install CO1 units into their homes (I'm a contractor). This is not the cheapest model available and the same company makes one without the digital readout which is less expensive, but I believe it's worth the extra money to have the readout. That way, I feel that if there is a problem, it may be caught sooner than later if the amount of emissions are listed. This unit is guaranteed to last seven years as opposed to the other model without the readout at five years. It's one place I would not want to cut corners. I also prefer the types that are mounted at eye level and not into an outlet.

Great Product
I bought this alarm because the description said you could use it on a table top. I wanted to put Carbon Monoxide alarm in the basement near the water heater and furnace but didn't want to go to the trouble of mounting it on a cement wall. This worked great! I just set it on the shelf in the laundry room. Bonus, I can still read the digital display because the screen is big. I have the previous version of this which was round and i think the part number was KN-COPP-B. I kept the box so I could order another one but was happy to find out that they updated it and made it free standing.I highly recommend this product, and Amazon shipped it in a day. I bought it and the next day I had it in my house working.

Features
The KN-COPP-B-LPM is an essential device to help warn you and your family of dangerous carbon monoxide levels in your home. This alarm measures the exposure to carbon monoxide over time; it is designed to sound at 85 decibels at 10 feet when it detects 70 ppm (parts per million) of CO for 60 to 240 minutes, 150 ppm for 10 to 50 minutes, or 400 ppm for 4 to 15 minutes. The easily visible digital display indicates the level of CO that the unit is sensing, and it updates the status every 15 seconds for timely and accurate readings. Its free-standing design allows for attachment to a wall or placement on a counter or nightstand for convenient and comprehensive protection. The KN-COPP-B-LPM also includes a slide-out battery door that provides immediate access to the power source as well as a battery safeguard that makes it difficult to close the cover without batteries installed. An LED lighting system on the unit signals power levels and sourcing: the green LED will flash once every 30 seconds to indicate the alarm is operating properly when power is present, and the red LED will pulse to indicate carbon monoxide has been detected until the device is reset or the CO threat is eliminated. This device has an expected 7-year lifespan and comes equipped with a five-year manufacturer’s limited warranty.

Might have just saved our lives
I bought two of these after another cheaper carbon monoxide detector had alarmed in the middle of the night. I had read some reviews of the other carbon monoxide detector having false alarms and convinced myself it was probably a false alarm but I opened windows to air out the house.I got these two days ago and they alarmed the first night. I opened the windows and deduced that it was probably my tankless water heater which was recently installed and failed inspection. It is scheduled to be brought up to code this week.To prove my theory I made sure the central heat was off for a day and we hadn't used the clothes dryer for a few days and I put one of these detectors in the laundry room where the tankless water heater is installed. We have one of those large jacuzzi style baths in the master bathroom (hence the need to have the tankless) and we took a bath last night. When we were done the alarm was going off. I had done some minimal research before doing...

Product Description

Carbon monoxide (CO) is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America, yet many people don't know they are suffering from CO poisoning until its too late. Since symptoms of CO poisoning are like the flu, you might not even know you're in danger at first. That's why a carbon monoxide alarm is an excellent way to protect your family. It can detect the CO you can't see, smell or taste in the air.

The First Alert CO615 carbon monoxide alarm uses an electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor-the most accurate technology available. Installation is as simple as plugging it in to any wall outlet. Its easy-to-read backlit digital LED display gives you a clear read-out of current CO concentrations in parts per million. The alarm includes a battery back-up giving you peace of mind in a power outage. The test/silence button both silences a non-threatening alarm or low battery warning and allows you to test the unit's functionality. The unit monitors and re-alarms if carbon monoxide levels persist sounding a loud 85-decibel horn. An audible and visual low battery signal alerts you to replace the battery and an indicator alerts you when a battery has been removed. An end-of-life alarm of three chirps alerts you to replace the unit. Two AA batteries are included. 5-year limited warranty. UL listed. --Bree Norlander

Simple to use, works well
I purchased this for my Mom, who has a very low tolerance for any type of electronics that has more than one button. This fits the bill perfectly -- just plug it in, and it works. Other models have more advanced features, such as a digitial display or a batter backup, but if you're looking for simplicity and a low cost, this is a great choice.

No Brainer!
I chose this alarm because it was the easiest to use. Just plug it in and that's it. I have a gas fireplace and was told that I needed a carbon monoxide detector. Plugged into a regular outlet, it has a dim light to let you know that it's working and you can test the monitor at any time to make sure it's "alarmed." Hopefully, I'll never have to see how well the monitor works in an emergency but I feel safer knowing that I have one.

CO ALARM - everyone w/gas should have one
We tested it on the truck's exhaust and it went off at about 60 ppm according to our digital CO Meter.Which proves it works to Govenment Standards. This model does what it is supposed to do, the more expensive models just have more features that you probably will not notice on an everyday basis anyway. This is the least expensive model we have seen that functions, so we hope at this price everyone should have one in their home and garage. Please replace batteries regularly......

A must have!
We purchased 5 of these; one for each bedroom, the family room, and an elderly neighbor's bedroom. Install was painless. It does, however, need to be mounted on a wall, not a ceiling, so we chose a spot over each bedroom door.Carbon Monoxide MIXES with the air. It does not stay low or high. You can't see it or smell it. That's why it's so deadly. The piece of mind of having these installed is enormous. More people die of CO poisoning than from fire. If you don't have a CO detector, get one, two, etc. The price is right.

SAVED MY FAMILIES LIFE!!!
We live in a 4 level split home. Our gas furnace is on the lower, 3rd level. Two years ago we had several smoke alarms, but only one carbon monoxide detector on the top, bedroom level of our home. One early Saturday morning we awoke to the voice of this alarm broadcasting, "WARNING! CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTED!" over and over again. I got out of bed and took the batteries out of the unit. By then my then 16 year old daughter came out of her room and was watching me. I told her to go back to bed, but she asked me why we weren't going outside to our designated emergency spot. I thought I was being a bad example after all the years of telling the children to get our of the house if an alarm went off. I didn't think there was a problem. I assumed the unit was broken or needed a new battery. I wasn't thinking clearly. So, I put the batteries back in to see if it would go off again. It did. She again asked why we weren't following the rules and going outside, so we left the house...

An Excellent Combination Life-Safety Alarm that is a Good Choice As A Stand Alone or As Part of A Total Home Safety Alert Plan
I've installed installed two of these Kidde brand combination smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in my elder parents home. I have one in my own home as well and have found them all to be reliable and trouble free. What attracted me to this model were its many features:First, it has a low profile, attractive and unobtrusive design.Second and perhaps most important, it has a voice speaking function that, in addition to the 85db alert horn, will speak out clear warnings: "FIRE, FIRE" or "DANGER: CARBON MONOXIDE". I think that this feature is a terrific addition toward modern life-safety technology. Indeed, you will likely see more voice warning devices in the near future. We rely on these detectors to warn us, especially at night when we are sleeping. Awakening to this detector from a deep sleep helps orient you quickly by telling you the specific danger -- clearly and unmistakably. Notably, recent studies have shown that children can...

Product Description

The Kidde KN-COSM-B Battery-Operated Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarm combines two important safety devices into a single unit. This alarm includes a voice warning system that announces "Fire, Carbon Monoxide, Low Battery, or Smart Hush Activation." The voice alarm eliminates any confusion and clearly warns you and your family of a smoke or carbon monoxide danger, or if your battery is in need of replacement. This unit uses three AA batteries, protecting you and your family even during a power outage.

This alarm uses ionization sensing technology for the smoke alarm. Ionization sensing alarms may detect invisible fire particles (associated with flaming fires) sooner than photoelectric alarms. Photoelectric sensing alarms may detect visible particles (associated with smoldering fires) sooner than ionization alarms. Kidde strongly recommends that both ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms be installed to help insure maximum detection of the various types of fire that can occur within the home.

Kidde KN-COSM-B Battery-Operated Combination Smoke and CO Alarm
  • Employs both smoke and carbon monoxide sensors.
  • Stand-alone battery operated alarm is easy to install throughout the home, as no wiring is needed.
  • Features a hush button to silence the alarm for non-emergency situations like a smoky dinner.
  • Voice alarm eliminates confusion and clearly warns of smoke/CO danger or low battery.

Combination Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Alarm
The Kidde Combination Carbon Monoxide & Smoke Alarm includes a voice warning system that eliminates confusion and clearly warns you and your family of a smoke or carbon monoxide (CO) danger, or if your battery is in need of replacement or your alarm is in hush mode.

Alarm Warnings
Fire: The red LED will flash and be accompanied by three long alarm beeps followed by a verbal warning message "Fire! Fire!" The alarm will repeat the pattern until smoke is eliminated. View movie showing voice warning

Carbon Monoxide: Four short alarm beeps followed by a verbal warning "Warning! Carbon Monoxide!" This continues until the unit is reset or the CO is eliminated. View movie showing voice warning

Low Battery: One chirp followed by warning "Low Battery." The red LED light will flash. This pattern will continue every minute for the first hour. After the first hour, the red LED light will flash once every minute and will be accompanied by the chirp sound. The "Low Battery" warning will only sound once every fifteen minutes.

Voice Hush Indication: "Hush Activated" and "Hush Canceled" voice announcement.

Peak Level Memory: If the alarm had detected a CO level of 100ppm or higher when the Test/Reset button is pressed, the unit will announce "Carbon Monoxide Previously Detected" to warn of the CO incident.

Trademarked Hush Feature for Convenience
By pressing the Hush button, you can easily and safely silence nuisance alarms caused by non-emergency situations, such as overcooked dinners.

This feature desensitizes the alarm for approximately 10 minutes. If the smoke is not too dense, the alarm will silence immediately, the unit will verbally announce "Hush Mode Activated", and the green LED will flash every 2 seconds for approximately 10 minutes.

Reliable Battery Power, Indicator LED, Test Feature and Low-Battery Warning
The battery powered alarm provides continuous protection, even during power outages. Because this alarm only helps protect you if it's working, this unit features a red LED that flashes every 30 to 40 seconds to indicate that it is operating correctly. For additional peace of mind, the alarm also contains a test/reset button that enables you to periodically test its circuitry and horn.

If any form of battery failure is detected the red LED light will flash and the unit will "chirp" one time, followed by the warning message "Low Battery." This cycle will occur once every minute, and will continue for at least seven days.

Seven (7) years after initial power up, this unit will "chirp" every 30 seconds. This is an "operational end of life" feature which will indicate that it is time to replace the alarm. UL 2034, the independent standard applicable to CO alarms, requires CO alarms to have an end of life warning. This requirement went into effect in March 2007, meaning any CO alarm manufactured after April 2007 with a UL listing must have this feature. Most states that require CO alarms in residential dwellings mandate that the alarm meet the UL 2034 standard.

The unit measures just 5.75 inches in diameter and 1.7 inches deep, and it features a neutral, white finish. It includes tamper resist features to deter vandalism or theft. This combination smoke/CO alarm is UL listed, so you can be confident of its quality, and it is backed by a 5-year limited warranty.

Love the digital readout
Set up was easy. Love the digital read-out. And I love that in 7 years the unit will tell me it's time to replace it. Nice sticker on the top to write in the date myself too.My only complaint, if you want to call it that, is that you have to hit the button in the back to kill the sound that you hear continuously if you unplug the unit from the ac. Glad I figured that out before the first power failure or the unit would have gone on and on.Overall, a great unit at a great price.

About Carbon Monoxide: The Silent Killer
The leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in North America, carbon monoxide (CO) is often referred to as the silent killer because it's odorless, tasteless, and invisible. Carbon monoxide poisoning can come about via a number of sources, including everyday items and appliances in your home or office. And because symptoms of CO poisoning mimic the flu or other common illnesses, CO poisoning can often go undiagnosed.

When placed on every level of your home, alarms like the Nighthawk 900-0234 can help protect everyone in the house from CO exposure by giving an unmistakable audible signal when CO levels have reached an unhealthy point.

Easy-to-Read Digital Display Shows CO Levels
Featuring a small, sleek, discreet design that's suitable for all living areas, the Nighthawk 900-0234 is preferred among CO alarms because of its digital display. This display clearly shows current levels of CO--from 30 to 999 ppm--and it updates every 15 seconds, giving you an indication of any abrupt changes or alarming trends. The display also shows the peak CO level recorded by the alarm since it was last reset or unplugged.

Loud Alerts Signal Elevated Levels and Low Battery Life
The Nighthawk 900-0234 immediately sounds a loud warning signal if CO has reached an elevated, unsafe level in your home, giving you plenty of time to leave the premises. You'll also hear a clearly audible alert when the product is nearing the end of its seven-year life, or the battery needs changing.

Battery Operated for Continuous Monitoring
For added convenience, the Nighthawk 900-0234 also has a battery backup, which means you won't have to worry about power outages. Unlike many A/C units, the Nighthawk will monitor continuously without interruptions. And because it has a seven-year product life, it's able to provide protection up to 40 percent longer than other units.

User-Friendly, Protective Features
For added peace of mind, the Nighthawk 900-0234 has a test/reset button that allows you to verify that the alarm is functioning properly, and a tamper-resistant feature that works by putting the unit into constant alarm mode if it has been unplugged or has come loose from the outlet.

Compliancy and Warranty Information
The Nighthawk 900-0234 is UL listed and is backed by a seven-year limited warranty.

Good product, has some plusses over earlier model, one downside
Kidde makes good CO detectors. We've had several Nighthawks for years and they've worked well (at least we think so, never had a CO problem). Our previous version was the the COPP-3 (we had a couple of experiences with the low battery chirping-- a nuisance in the middle of the night--and once, it happened again shortly after we had put a new battery in. Others have had many more problems in that regard--see reviews). It was time to replace them. We first bought 3 Kidde KN-COPP-B Front Load Battery-Operated Carbon Monoxide Alarm with Digital Display--but ran into several problems (see my review). The biggest problem was that Amazon's stock was old (the detectors were over 2 years old) and the warranty was only for 5 years. Other downsides are that they required mounting and were only battery operated! We returned them making use of Amazon's consumer-friendly return policy. We then bought this model. It has these great features.1) Comes with a...

Larger than it looks
The alarm on this device could wake the dead. It is larger than it appears, and covers both receptacles. Installing the back-up battery isn't fast--you must unscrew a little screw to get the battery door open, and reinstall it to get the door closed again. Believe the instructions when they tell you to plug it in as soon as the battery is installed to avoid the alarm going off. I didn't time how long before the alarm sounded, but it isn't long at all based on my personal experience. I suggest you install the battery in the room where you are going to install the unit. It is reassuring to see the red zero on the displays. I have two of them, and would buy the product again.

Another option is the Escort 9500ci, which includes the Escort Passport 9500i radar detector and the new Escort Passport ZR4 laser jammer in one integrated system (see sources). The best laser jammer continues to be the Blinder M45 Laser Jammer. ) The PRS4-STi is also available with the Blinder M25 instead of the Blinder M45, if you need to save some money and only need laser protection in front OR back. There are several integrated radar detector and laser jammer systems. I would shop for a system that works together instead of simply buying 2 separate products.
