A Bumpy Road For Christianity
This book points how politic leaders and conditions of the times controlled the speed of the progress of the Christian religion. There are excellent examples of the tenaciousoness of true believers against unbelievable odds.I have Will Durant's "The Reformation," which is a lengthy scholarly tome covering just the Reformation; however, "Sketches of Church History" gives one just enough information without looking into every nook and cranny of the subject. Using the story of "Goldie Locks & the Three Bears to compare the afformentioned books: "The Reformation" = 'Too much' "Sketches -" = Just right.

Amazing Book for All Christians, Even Those Who DO Want to Go to Church!
*****This book is perfect for people who have been alienated by the Christian church and/or by Christians, but also for people who are happy with the Christian church. It is actually a book about how to be in love with Jesus, and how that can manifest in today's church environment. I am sharing this book with everyone I know who is a Christian, and will read it again myself. It doesn't matter what your denomination is or what your beliefs are; if you want to return to a "first love"-type relationship with Jesus, buy and read this book. You will not be able to put it down.It is written as a novel, with a mysterious character who may be the disciple John, and a burnt-out pastor as the main character, Jake. Pastor Jake's life is suspenseful over the four years that the novel takes place, and the changes that take place in his life and in his thinking are riveting.I read this in one day and am sharing it with my daughter, friend, and husband on our...

Don't miss the forest for the trees
I finished the book in about two days. A very good and intriguing read. Perhaps the greatest thing that I have taken away from the book is a reminder of both the complexity and simplicity of Father's love.I have read several of the comments written about this book, and I can't help but wonder if the majority of them have still missed the central message of the book and the gospel itself: Everything is about the Father's love.A search of scripture will quickly reveal that the Father is much more interested in our unqualified fellowship with him than making sure that our ecclesiology is correct.I read the book and immediately wanted my wife and all others I know to read it too. My hope was that they would get the same revelation that I did. Unfortunately, Father doesn't work that way. Father understands that this thing called "Christianity" is a journey not a destination. As He leads us, He desires intently that we remain in fellowship with him. His...

Living Wisely and Well
Professor J. Brian Benestad, who teaches theology at the University of Scranton, has written a valuable book. The book is valuable because it is encyclopedic, orthodox, and well researched. Church, State, and Society is both companion to and expansion of the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church. Quite effectively, Professor Benestad examines Catholic Social Doctribe (CSD) by analyzing it in four sections: the human person, the political community, and the common good; the Church, the family, and the Catholic University (and liberal education); the universal destination of goods and private property; and the international community and just war. I read the book from its beginning through its appendix (an astute commentary about Pope Benedict's encyclical Caritas in Veritate), but some may wish to read and study only certain chapters. Benestad is, I think, at his best in defending authentic liberal education; his defense extended even to his expressed concern about (and...

Church, State and Society
This excellent book could go a long way to clearing up much confusion in this dark age. The author successfully weaves the tapestry of Catholic Social Doctrine using the appropriate threads of the Great encyclicals from wise Popes as well as the ancient wisdom of Aristotle and Aquinas amongst many others. Mother Church when clothed by those who would weave Her garment of the invisible threads of liberation theology borrowed from Marx, Darwin, Freud and all others interested in rebuilding the Tower of Babel in our lifetime, is shamefully ill clad.Would that our clergy will pick up this exceptional exposition of the True intentions of Mother Church's social teaching as we try to follow Christ's two most important commandments, love God with all your heart, mind, strength and soul, and your neighbor as yourself. Dr. Benestad goes back to the 4 cardinal virtues and the 3 theological virtues. Sadly, access to a true understanding of these virtues has been obscured by...

Product Description

How can the Catholic faith help not only Catholics, but all people, build a just and flourishing society?

The Catholic Church contributes first and foremost to the common good by forming the consciences of the faithful. Faith helps reason achieve a proper understanding of the common good and thereby guides what individuals need to do to live justly and harmoniously. In this book, J. Brian Benestad provides a detailed and accessible introduction to Catholic social doctrine (CSD), the Church's teachings concerning the human person, the family, society, political life, charity, justice, and social justice.

Church, State, and Society explains the nuanced understanding of human dignity and the common good found in the Catholic intellectual tradition. It makes the case that liberal-arts education is an essential part of the common good because it helps people understand their dignity and all that justice requires. The author shows the influence of ancient and modern political philosophy on CSD philosophy and examines St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, papal social encyclicals, Vatican Council II, and postconciliar magisterial teaching. Benestad highlights the teachings of popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI that the attainment of the common good depends on the practice of the virtues by citizens and leaders alike.

The book is divided into four parts. The first treats key themes of social life: the dignity of the human person, human rights, natural law, and the common good. Part two focuses on the three principal mediating institutions of civil society: the family, the Church, and the Catholic university. Part three considers the economy, work, poverty, immigration, and the environment, while part four focuses on the international community and just war principles. The conclusion discusses tension between CSD and liberal democracy. Top to learn more

Fine Tuning Our Faith
Hopefully the provocative title, 52 Lies Heard in Church Every Sunday, will catch the attention of many, as it is a book that will clear up the thinking, and be of great encouragement, to many; many who may have been a bit misled, or mildly confused, and some who have been out-and-out misdirected.Despite the negative title, 52 Lies is a powerful and positive pronouncement of why God's truth is so much better than our faulty misinterpretations, or unwillingness to simply take God at his word. Taking something of a back door approach, it zeroes in on some of the pop terminology that has invaded the church, along with many misrepresentations and misunderstandings. It focuses on the wonderful truths of God's love and grace, that unmerited favor, that we, in all our achievement-based humanness, have such a difficult time getting into our heads. It is a grace that carries well beyond our introduction into the faith. It is the power that keeps us going. Some of the...

What an eye opener...
I do not believe I can fully express in words how God has used this book but I will attempt it. When I first saw the titles of this books chapters my first reaction was "the author of this book can not be right." I studied each chapter in my Bible and I was amazed to find that most of what I had been taught in church and also what I had heard about God even outside of church was a lie. I had taken ahold of these lies and I held fast to each one. I found in my personal study from the Bible and from this book that I was being manipulated by man's ways and I was greatly decieved. Thank God that he works through this book to set captives free. If there is a word I could use to descride this book it would be "Liberating."

A Book That Magnifies the Good News
I love this book because it chisels away at traditional thinking that has caused many to misunderstand what the Gospel really is. Even if you don't agree with everything the author has to say, you'll walk away with some things to think about and it may completely change your thinking. This is an easy read, the chapters are very short and it's a book that will actually bring encouragement. Steve takes the focus off of us and puts it on the One to whom it belongs.

Product Description

Could many churchgoing Christians be getting a diluted Christianity—one that diminishes the loving, giving, personal God who provides the believer everything in life?

Author Steve McVey passionately but unwittingly taught from the pulpit the very lies he now exposes. Forthrightly but humbly, he shows how pastors and churches can end up distorting scriptural truths because of their preconceptions.

Opening up the Scriptures freshly, Steve examines typical problems such as

  • Leaving out half of the truth: “Becoming a Christian means having your sins forgiven.” (We also are made alive!)
  • Using “shorthand” that promotes an unbiblical view: “Our sins are under the blood of Jesus.” (Far better, they’ve been taken away!)
  • Confusing our role with God’s: “Salvation is giving your life to Christ.” (More important, He gives His life to us!)

Readers will see that God’s undiluted truth is always best…and brings a fulfilling, close relationship with Him.

One of the best books I've read in a long time
Total Church is one of the best books I've read in a long time and may be THE best books I've read on church. As the subtitle suggests, the authors argue that church is to be radically reshaped around gospel and community. They argue for three things:"Christian practice must be (1) gospel-centered in the sense of being word-centered, (2) gospel-centered in the sense of being mission-centered, and (3) community-centered." (p. 16)The authors immediately nail their colors to the mast, distinguishing their perspective from both conservative evangelicals and the emerging church. With emerging church, they agree that conservatives are often bad at community. But with conservatives, they agree that the emerging church is sometimes soft on truth. This book proposes an alternative to both, churches that are both gospel-centered (with both a word-centered focus and a missional focus) and community-centered."Rigorously applying these principles has the...

Read this book
There are many people today who are talking about the major shifts that are occurring in culture and in the church in the West. Many are speaking of the return to a mission-centered approach to the Christian life. The problem is that many (myself included) tend to get bogged down in the talking and thinking phase.Tim Chester and Steve Timmis live in the UK, which, culturally speaking, is further down the road of secularization than we are in America, but not by much. It's therefore very helpful to learn from them, as they have had more time to work out the implications of what this means for church life. What they've found is that we need to retool our conceptions of what it means to be the church, and once again learn to live deeply as the body of Christ in our local communities. In Total Church Chester and Timmis propose that the two core components of church life are the gospel and community. They winsomely and compellingly show that the major...

Product Description

"Church is not a meeting you attend or a place you enter," write pastors Tim Chester and Steve Timmis. "It's an identity that is ours in Christ. An identity that shapes the whole of life so that life and mission become 'total church.'" With that as their premise, they emphasize two overarching principles to govern the practice of church and mission: being gospel-centered and being community-centered. When these principles take precedence, say the authors, the truth of the Word is upheld, the mission of the gospel is carried out, and the priority of relationships is practiced in radical ways. The church becomes not just another commitment to juggle but a 24/7 lifestyle where programs, big events, and teaching from one person take a backseat to sharing lives, reaching out, and learning about God together.

In Total Church, Chester and Timmis first outline the biblical case for making gospel and community central and then apply this dual focus to evangelism, social involvement, church planting, world missions, discipleship, pastoral care, spirituality, theology, apologetics, youth and children's work. As this insightful book calls the body of Christ to rethink its perspective and practice of church, it charts a middle path between the emerging church movement and conservative evangelicalism that all believers will find helpful.

If Only There Were a Different Way of Doing Church...
Total Church is a book born out of longing: If only there were a different way of doing church!Authors Tim Chester and Steve Timmis seek to orient the Church around two main principles: gospel and community. The content of our message is the gospel. The context of our message is the Christian community.Being gospel-centered means we will be word-centered and mission-centered. This book directly challenges the voices of some in the Emerging Church who downplay the Word in favor of community. But Total Church also challenges the traditional's church's failure to produce authentic community under the guise of "biblical faithfulness."The authors chose Total Church as the title in order to stress that church is not a place we go. Church is an identity that shapes our whole lives. Our life and mission must become "total church." (18)The book begins with the principles of gospel and community. I am glad the authors do not collapse these two...
