A Mellow and Melodic Return for The Cranberries
On 'Roses', The Cranberries return to a melancholy mood with stringed instrumentals and lush arrangements. In 1993, The Cranberries debuted with a sound that incorporated an homage to The Smiths and 1980's guitars and percussion blended with Dolores O'Riordan's soft, airy vocals with just the right amount of angst.1994's follow-up, 'No Need To Argue' maintained the band's gentle arrangements while refining their rock edge with the hit song, "Zombie". Throughout both of these first two albums, The Cranberries' sound was perfectly captured by producer Stephen Street (Blur, The Smiths). In 1996, for the band's third album, The Cranberries wanted to feature the "rawness" of their live shows by working with Aerosmith producer, Bruce Fairbairn. The result saw Dolores O'Riordan forgoing her signature breathy vocals for powerhouse delivery while the songs, in general, were harder and arguably less cohesive. Though 1996's "To The Faithful Departed" had its...

Still making great music
Another great album from the Cranberries! It's very much in line with their previous albums, but I'm okay with that. It's WHY I like the Cranberries. They have a sound. It's the sound that made them famous and it's the sound that I've always loved. Too often, bands are coerced into thinking that they need to "evolve" (which is studio exec talk for "up the trendy") and end up with the band doing their impersonation of "new sound" (or even worse, they bring in a flavor-of-the-moment) The Cranberries don't do that. Ever. They make great music like they know how. Every album is just a little tighter than the last. For this album - think of all the great hooks & riffs, all of the haunting lines and Dolores's amazing, beautiful & unique voice. I'm sure it'll be the best purchase I make this year!

Unmistakenly The Cranberries!
The Irish rock band The Cranberries are back with a new CD 'Roses'. The music (11 new tracks) in this new CD is unmistakenly the sound that made this band famous with hits like "Linger". Lead vocals by Dolores O'Riordan are as great as ever. Stand-outs/gems/solid tracks are "Losing My Mind" : I love the wonderful vocals & melody & "Show Me" : inspirational lyrics on being shown the way/direction in life. Great tracks include "Conduct", "Tomorrow", "Fire And Soul", "Waiting In Walthamstow" & title track "Roses". Okay tracks include "Raining In My Heart", "Schizophrenic Playboy" & the slow/mellow "Astral Projections".On overall, The Cranberries are back following Dolores O'Riordan's solo project as if they have been always been here, unmistakenbly The Cranbberies' sound, a recommended CD listening.

CRANBERRIES THE STARS - THE BEST OF 1992/2002 Top to learn more

The essentials are all here...
While I wish this U.S. release was a 2-disc set (they deserve it!) this disc includes the most important and famous works of the Irish quartet. And as a bonus you get the two previously unreleased tracks including the immediately catchy 'Stars.' HOWEVER, like other "Best Of" CDs of artists, this disc contains edited versions of the original songs (The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars.) Most notable cuts occur in the songs 'Ridiculous Thoughts' where the haunting opening bars by Dolores are completely cut out and the 'Hollywood' track had the opening shortened as well. If you're a stickler for the original versions of the songs, then this "Best Of" may not be agreeable with you. But, if you're new to the Cranberries (where have you been!?!) you'll find this an amazing listen that is sure to be a permanent addition to your CD rotation.

The quintessential debut of the 1990's
In the early 90's, "alternative" was all the rage wasn't it? And in that pile of debuts, only three stand out for me. Let's see... It was 1993. There was Radiohead. There was The Smashing Pumpkins. And there was a little band from Ireland called The Cranberries. They just came out of nowhere and took the world by storm. But, brilliant as those other bands may be (and Radiohead's excellence didn't really show until their second album, by the way), The Cranberries had one up on them with their debut Cd: "Everybody Else Is Doing it, So Why Can't We?" Because they weren't trying to innovate. Theirs was a message of simplicity, and they hammered it home in such dreamy and elyptical fashion, that you could not get that incrdible voice or those haunting melodies out of your head. With their more pretentious contemporaries trying to give new spins to 60's psychodelia, The Cranberries had a down-to-earth pop sensibility that made them irresistible. A...

An achingly beautiful, simply amazing debut album
This remarkable CD is, in my opinion, the most remarkable debut album I have ever heard. I fell in love with the song Linger as soon as I heard it, so I naturally went right out and bought the album. I was impressed then and I'm still impressed. This music is so distinctive and achingly beautiful that it remains as fresh and enjoyable now, all these years later, as it did then. It is ironic that an album with such a long name features songs with short titles, but the overall disc really takes precedence over the individual songs. I actually have trouble remembering the title for each song, but this is primarily because this album is almost organic in its completeness, simply teeming with life and substance. I just don't put this CD in the drive and listen to a song here or there; I have to experience the whole thing every time I play it. I'm not sure how this distinctive type of music should be classified; I don't know if its primary influence is Welsh or Celtic or something...

Superb debut ! One awesome song after another!
It's a rare treat to find a CD (a debut album, no less!) thatis nothing but awesome songs, one after the other... no weird, bizarreor annoying tracks that need to be skipped... just incredible Dolores O'Riordan's haunting vocals through-out... thoughtful lyrics and a great sounding band. The Cranberries don't have lyrics that repeat a million times in each song, so you don't always realize the name of a track when you hear it on the radio... but believe me, you've heard at least one of their songs. If you've ever seen the promotional vacation commercial for travel to Ireland, you've heard "Dreams" sung in the background. Definitely a pick-me-up, but not a jazzy dance song... easy to listen to at work or as background music to housework or a country drive... one excellent melody after another! I have a library of over 600 CDs, but I only take about 20 with me when I go on a road trip... just the few I can listen to over and over again w/o skipping tracks... this is one of...
