Very Impressive
Ordered on Sat night and delivered to Adelaide, South Australia by Thursday afternoon. Excellent service Amazon! Securely packed, all parts supplied. Quality of neck and body much better than expected. Hardware as expected for the price (A$165 delivered), strings should be replaced, pickups are ok but can be replaced if desired. The neck joint is absolutely air tight with only minimal sanding - well done Saga. The sound takes me back to the Precision Fretless I sold in 1976 (and have regretted ever since). Relatively easy to put together but I managed to break one of the very small screws holding a tuner in. Will definitely use it at my next gig. An enjoyable experience and I am by no means a handyman. Perhaps next one will be six stringer!

Good for beginner bassists, great for beginner bass builders.
First of all, this is a kit for a fretless bass (it was described here as a fretted instrument), a clone of a Fender Jazz Bass. That needs to be squared away first.Since my old defretted Ibanez six-string is in such sad disrepair, and I needed something easier to play, I decided to buy a cheap four-string, but I knew it had to be fretless. I got spoiled on Jaco Pastorius, Les Claypool and the American composer Harry Partch (who invented a musical scale definitely not playable on a 12-note-per-octave fretted instrument), I like the smoother tone of a fretless, and I've developed a great ear for pitch anyway. So instead of paying $300 or more for even a Squier, I got a good deal for a Saga kit here, cheaper than anywhere else online.Though this is definitely an "assembly required" toy, the wires are already soldered so you don't have to handle lead, and the wood is unpainted, but sealed and sanded. Not counting the paint, I was able to have a playable instrument...

Amazing Bass for the $!!!
Customer Video Review Length:: 1:44 MinsSee Video. You cannot find a bass under $300 that will play like this - this is Jaco tone right out of the box! I tweaked the truss rod a bit (lowered the action) and voila! The Duncan Pups sound really good too! I have been playing for 30 years - I have played and owned the best of the best basses including Fender Custom Shop and Fodera - you will not be disappointed in this instrument - Fender really outdid themselves on this inexpensive little Axe. Almost all the Harmony Central reviews are all 9 or 10's! BTW - I am playing thru a Markbass 1X12 combo - recorded with the external Mic on my iPhone - just laying near the amp.

Wonderful bass
I am a classical musician, so I mainly play upright bass. I was interested in getting an electric just to try, use, and maybe jam on (I like a wide variety of music), so I looked into buying a fretless, as I much prefer the organic feel and sound of the instrument. So, for christmas I asked for a fretless with no expectations in mind but boy was I blown away! For the cheapest fretless bass we could find, it has an excellent sound quality, is easy to pick up and play, and is fairly comfortable already for someone like me who had never tried electric before. Thankfully everything was set when I got the bass, and I did not have to learn to adjust it. I doodle around at home unamped all the time, but it shines especially when I play it in the jazz band.Overall an excellent purchase! I recommend it highly.

FIne Bass at pricerange
I bought this bass just to have a fretless to mess around with and it has worked out great. I read the other review that says the fret markers are in the wrong place? This has NOT been my experience with this bass, the intonation is fine and I have had zero problems in that regard. Good thing about washburns is the parts are easily replacable in case you'd ever want to upgrade something, not that it needs it.

Great book!
While I may be a bit biased towards the fretless bass - this book is certainly very well done. Chris Jisi, from Bass Player, has assembled some of the most influential fretless players on the planet, to talk about technique, music, style, and technical aspects of fretless bass. The book is well organized, with some great information about music available, as well as who's playing what. The book is rounded out by some great luthiers and builders discussing care & feeding of a proper fretless.I also love the center section with some full page, and full color, Bass Player Magazine covers of great fretless players that have graced their pages. That's a very nice bonus. If you are at all interested in fretless bass - this book is a keeper!Wes WatsonFretlessBassist.com

Great inspiration
Great interviews from all the usual suspects (i.e., brilliant, flashy, and eccentric players from Wooten to Claypool),but I really appreciated the Bill Wyman interview. When I first picked up the Bass long ago,I first learned with his stuff in the Stones, for playing in sync with the drums, and now know it was done usually with a de-fretted Bass (who knew?).Playing in the Pocket.Great inspirational book!

Product Description

Who would have thought the electric bass guitar with its frets removed would transcend the rhythm section to become one of the most instantly recognizable sounds in all of music? From the jazz genius of Jaco Pastorius and the funk/punk abandon of Les Claypool, to the landmark rock of Jack Bruce and Sting, the instrument has a lyrical legacy all its own. This book collects the very best interviews, lessons, and gear and maintenance guides into one smooth-reading compilation. With insight from over 25 masters, including Tony Levin, Marcus Miller, Gary Willis, Jimmy Haslip, and Percy Jones, The Fretless Bass will give you a keen appreciation for the important innovators, as well as plenty of tools to find your own voice on the instrument. Good Information
This book has a lot of information about top pro players and their approach to the fretless that is useful for fretless players of all skill levels. I've been playing fretless for 20 years, and still learned a trick or two. I did NOT like the 16 pages of Bass Player magazine covers inserted into the middle of the book - it felt like filler. Perhaps the best price is a discounted price for that reason.

Customer Review

Great tone, good touch, great looks
I've been playing bass since the sixties and grabbed this to explore fretless a little deeper while staying on a budget. The Dean A-EBF has been a genuine treat, right out of the box. The tone is rich everywhere on the neck and I'm pleased with the volume I can get without amplification (it arrives with round wound strings). I was also surprised at the variety of voice available through mid to high positions, especially from the middle strings where the fretboard delivers ripe, Pastorious like swells. If you're into slap beware as the accoustic body tends to capture and resonate both sides of the strings almost equally. Obviously, transitioning away from frets requires a lot of concentration but also anticipate the extra travel distance to drive a string that doesn't stop on a bar. Its not about extra muscle, its about releasing the left fingers to jump a little higher, a little faster to find a neighboring open string. And don't look for any sympathy from this instrument's...

Couldn't ask for more for the price
This was a great price for a full-scale fretless bass. It plays fine and has a tuner built-in (make sure to turn it off when you're not using it or you'll kill the 9 volt battery). The sound is much much too much treble when playing this through an amplifier and every scratch and squeak is audible. For a cheap way to add a bass to an acoustic band or to practice playing fretless bass I would recommend this.

I am not a great bass player but have been around a while and have been playing fretless bass exclusively since the mid 70′s getting a thick, string bass sound and a lot of initial punch. Now, more than ever, it is important for you to have good hand position and control over your finger spacing (one finger per fret is ideal) Fretless Bass Performance (aka. There is a terrific prejudice out there thinking that all fretless bass players have a mid-rangy, mooo sound and that we all play out of tune. Fretless Bass Practice: Try playing scales or melodic patterns slowly through a tuner. With the bass guitar the best advice I can give is that when you’re playing low all of the reach is fairly convenient and it pretty straightforward to stay in tune if you keep your fingers parallel. Excellent non-fretted string players and wind players understand that intonation is relative to the preceding note and the next note in the sequence, relative to the musical idea. I have worked many styles using the same bass. So, aside from piano players, you’ll probably always be playing with players who are adjusting their intonation, learning equal temperament is a good base. As far as sliding in and out of notes goes, you get more of that characteristic “mwah” sound on the higher strings, which you can use regardless of how in tune you’re aiming to be, as its timbre seems to cut through just about any mix, so that’s a...
