Surprisingly sturdy, no smearing
I've got to say, I didn't have high expectations of these plant markers when I ordered them, not because I expected them to be bad, but just because, I mean, c'mon, how exciting can a little plastic marker stick for a plant be? When I got them, though, I was really impressed. These are literally 1/16th of an inch thick (I know because I stacked up 16 of them and measured that it was an inch), which makes them quite sturdy. They aren't brittle, so if you do try to bend them, they won't snap (they aren't really meant to be bent, though, and I'm not entirely sure why anyone would want to - mainly I'm saying that you won't accidentally snap one in two if you kick it in the garden). The plastic is white, with a slight texture to it (texture is on both sides). If you write on the labels with a sharpie or similar, the writing is clear, and doesn't smear - seems instantly dry. There is a small hole punched near the "pointy" end of the labels, so if you wanted to poke...

Great to use over and over
The sticks are slightly rough on one side so they are easy to write in with a permanent marker. I don't know if the plant names have staying power yet, but these thick, durable plastic sticks can be used over and over with a good wash in bleach and dish detergent.

My favorite labels - but use pencil, not pen
I've been using these labels for a couple years now. I love them. They are durable, easy to write on, and in the 50-pack are downright cheap. (I dont understand why some people sell the 20 pack of short labels for $10, and others sell the 50 pack of longer labels for $6. Wierd.)I am giving them 4 stars instead of 5 because there is a 1cm round indentation on one side that makes that side hard to write on. I assume it is some relic of the plastic injection process, but it is right in the way of where I want to write, making these labels effectively one-sided. Oh well, they got everything else right. One note in reply to a prior review - it does seem intuitively obvious to use a sharpie to write on these (or other plant labels.) However, sharpie (and other ink) does not last in the sun. Plain old ordinary pencil (graphite) is basically indelible and never fades in the sun. It really only comes off with an eraser (plus, with an eraser, pencil makes the...

Make this the very first gardening book you buy!
This is the book that makes my gardening dreams possible, it is never far from my side. I guess I would call it a reference book because it is packed with information, but don't let that scare you away. There are a staggering 15,000 plants described with 6,000 photographs. Each plant's cultural needs, botanical name, hardiness and method of cultivation are mentioned however briefly. The book is well organized and easy to use. It isn't hard to find a 4-5 ft shrub that blooms pink in summer, or whatever your garden needs are. This book is also beautiful; I look at it for fun all winter long...sweet dreams til summer's sunbeams find you.

Your coffee table garden plant reference for years to come!
This is the new garden plant reference book for the home or professional gardener. Although it is set up by Family/Genus/Species/Variety, there is a handy common name index in the back of the book. Extensive varietal color photos make this book a must for the flower enthusiast. There is also an excellent reference on plant terminology in the front of the book. Since I live in the western US, my plant reference book of choice has always been the Sunset Western Garden Book. This book has since taken it's place as my preferred, but the Western Garden Book does have some plants that are not listed in this book. However, there are many times more plants not listed in the Western Garden Book that are found in this book. Highly Recommended!

Product Description

The most comprehensive, detailed, and lavishly illustrated guide to garden plants ever published, first published in 1997, has now been completely revised to include nearly 250 new plants and photos. The AHS A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants is an essential reference for all gardeners, from novices to experts. Top to learn more

Collecting contributions from 100 distinguished horticulturists, the handsome and lavishly illustrated American Horticultural Society A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants is a truly definitive gardening reference. With its 1,092 tiny-print pages, this may not be the book to tuck into your pocket as you weed and mulch, but what this encyclopedia lacks in portability, it certainly makes up for in scope. Hardy and tender plants, heirloom varieties and the latest hybrids--they're all accounted for here, with growing tips and background information about native habitats and ornamental features. You'll also find a fascinating section about botany, as well as information about basic gardening techniques such as mulching, staking, pruning, propagating, and protecting plants for winter. But the encyclopedia's main attraction is the individual plant entries--more than 15,000 of them, embellished with 6,000 full-color photographs and illustrations. From the visual glossary of leaves to the map of growing regions, The American Horticultural Society A-Z of Garden Plants provides an unsurpassed wealth of botanical information, making it the yardstick by which all other gardening references must be measured. Top to learn more

Excellent Referance
This book is the ultimate reference guide for the home gardener. The pictures and detailed information is staggering. There are also sections for creating your own garden with some very good drawings. Maps show the temperature zones and planting times. The only downside(which is minor) is the plants are listed by their botanical name and not the common name. There is a section in the back that cross-referances them so you won't be totally lost. This minor inconvienance may not affect more advanced gardeners. The lack of an index also is a short-coming. Over all though, this book has the most comprehensive information in one volume. Highly recommended.

CLEAN THE SHAFT AND TIP WITH STEEL WOOL
Surprisingly, no reviewer has recognized that this device acts as a battery. The anode and cathode are formed by the copper shaft and the lead tip. The electrolyte is the moisture in the soil. Low meter readings will result from low soil moisture (as intended) and, although not intended, from corrosion of the copper shaft or lead tip. So, clean the tip and shaft regularly with something like steel wool before inserting the probe in the soil.I bought 6 of these testers and all gave different readings until I used steel wool on the shaft and tip. After cleaning they all gave higher readings and did a great job of signalling the moisture content of the soil. You can test the device by submerging the tip and shaft in a few inches of water. If the meter's needle moves into the "wet" zone, no cleaning is needed. If the needle doesn't move quickly into the "wet" zone, cleaning as described.

It's cheap and it really works well
I was concerned the price was too low, but this meter does the job quickly and accurately. It's well-built and works, giving an accurate reading in about 20 seconds. What more do you need? I've even dropped mine several times with no ill effects (not recommended behavior). There's no reason for most gardeners to spend any more on a soil moisture meter.

Works like a charm
It works. You can get the reading IMMEDIATELY. It is helping me to avoid killing more plants by overwartering.

Too flimsy for repeated use
In the picture, these look like the nice plant markers I have seen at the garden center -- they aren't! They are smaller and the copper is very thin and not well attached to the stake. They may be OK for house plants or for one year in the garden, but won't hold up for long. Also, the marking pen that came with them was dried up.I would not buy this product again.

50 High-Impact, Low-Care Garden Plants
I had the opportunity to hear the author talk about "50 High-Impact, Low-Care Garden Plants" at the 2009 Ohio Nursery & Landscape Association and The Ohio State University Short Course. I especially appreciated that she included woodies as well as perennials in the talk as well as in this book. The book is the perfect addition to any designer's library of reference material. The selection of plants is a virtual "Who's Who" of tough, dependable horticultural fare and opened my palette to some new or underused plants as well. I have already recommended the book as well as the plants to several co-workers.

Review: 50 High-Impact, Low-Care Garden Plants:Tough-but-Beautiful Plants Anyone Can Grow by Tracy Disabato-AustAs a novice gardener, I am drawn to gardening books with a judicious mix of beautiful pictures and helpful advice. This book caught me with its opening: I wrote this book because you might be like me. You love to garden, but there is never enough time...I've been a gardener for over thirty years both as an avocation and vocation. I love gardening but I also have countless other passions including spending time with my husband, our teenage son, and our dogs and chickens, as well as being a competitive multisport athlete at the national and international level. So I'm constantly rethinking areas of my garden and seeking beautiful yet tough plants to replace demanding ones. I refer to them affectionately as indomitable - not easily defeated, resolute, unconquerable, determined, and strong. Does this sound like the type of plant for...

BUY 50 High-Impact, Low-Care Garden Plants

Buy Garden Plants

Read the seed packets, or discuss your plant purchases with someone at the garden store, so you will know for sure what kind of environment the plants you are interested in need – especially for their light, water, and space requirements. We know, of course, that plants need water to grow, but the amount of water of different plants varies. It’s common for people to water their plants too much and this can be as deadly to the plants as not giving them any water. If you want to have the healthiest plants possible, you need to take the time to learn some fundamentals of plant growing. The more plants you have, the more there will be to keep track of, and chances are many of your plants will have different needs. Even if you’re just going to buy plants in pots for inside or outside your house, restrain yourself from buying too many at first. Forums are specific communities of like-minded people who help each other with whatever the specific topic of the forum is. There are many forums on gardening and plants, for instance, and joining in the conversation can be of great benefit to you. One common mistake a lot of gardeners make is not learning the proper amount of water specific plants need. When the excitement of growing a garden hits us, it’s easy to go overboard and plan a very complex garden. If you have any questions, ask someone who gardens, search online, or pick up a basic book on gardening. With the advent of the internet, it’s very easy to find more information than you could possibly need or use on the subjects of gardening and growing plants. If you do a search online, you will find many websites and blogs dedicated to gardening, and even to specific types of plants.

If you buy a lot of plants, it will be harder to account for the care of each plant, and you’ll also face the prospect of different plants having different requirements. Usually when you buy a plant or some seeds, there will be information on the back of the seed packet, or a tag on the plant, to tell you what the requirements are for successful growth. While everyone knows that plants need water, it’s still very common for people to not give their plants the right amount of water. When it’s time to water your plants, give each plant however much water it needs. With experience, you can learn how to keep your plants healthy, but even if you’re a beginner you can have success by researching the needs of every plant you’re growing. If you want to have the healthiest plants possible, you need to take the time to learn some fundamentals of plant growing. Garden centers are good sources of information, and if you buy plants or seeds from them, don’t be afraid to ask questions of the knowledgeable staff. In the beginning, buy just a couple of nice plants that catch your eye, and only buy one or two of each variety to get you started. This is a wonderful way to benefit, not only from the garden itself, but also by meeting fellow gardeners and learning new gardening skills. We are all living in a vast sea of information, and you can find plenty of valuable info on gardening and growing plants. The internet can provide you with hundreds of blogs, eBooks, articles, and websites on any facet of gardening, or any particular plant, that you want to learn more about.

If you have numerous plants, it will make it necessary for you to learn – quickly – what the specific needs of each plant are, and you’ll have to keep an eye on each and every plant. Plants appeal to numerous people, whether they have a rose garden, vegetable garden, or a few herbs growing on their windowsill. You will, of course, want to learn as much about the plants you grow as you can so all your time won’t be wasted, and you will have healthy plants to show for your efforts. A lot of little factors come into play when you are dealing with a specific plant, but the main things you must get in the right proportion are sunshine (or artificial light), water, and the amount of space each plant needs. Your odds of having successful, healthy plants will increase if you only have a few plants to control and observe. You can learn a lot from the workers at your local garden center where you buy your plants, seeds, and supplies. If you’ve decided to grow herbs, for example, buy a plant or two of easy-to-grow herbs, such as Basil or Cilantro. A great place to touch base with other gardeners, and learn a lot of information in the process, is to find out if there is a community garden in your area. One mistake newcomers to gardening make is to plan a very ambitious garden and then be overwhelmed by its complexity. But, at the beginning, make it a priority to look up the best conditions for a new plant you want to include in your garden. The basic information you need for a plant or seeds is usually provided when you buy the product. Just pick two or three varieties to begin with, and don’t buy too many of each plant.
