Eye Opening
The author did a great job with this book! The premise of this book is quite simple -- the U.S. today is as unprepared to deal with a serious terrorist attack as it was in days before the terrible events of 9/11. We are still dangerously vulnerable to any terrorist wishing to seriously damage the U.S. by attacking any one of a host of ill-secured targets. After reading this book you will find out how Customs Officers with very little training and knowledge --`targeted' a certain group of international travelers in the name of national security -mostly to make overtime money. What a shame!

Product Description

I wrote this book to inspire and encourage other trailblazers facing crossroads in their lives to listen to their hearts. Do what's right. Stand up for justice. Not only will others' lives be enriched, so will your own.

My fight with U.S. Customs was long, hard, and fierce but I was sent angels. I was sent angels in the form of Whistleblower attorneys, EEO attorneys, legislators, media entities, civil rights leaders, community activists and advocates.

I remembered what my parents instilled in me about being respectful, doing the right thing, and telling the truth. Knowing my life would change forever and realizing my decision would affect my family, impact my livelihood, and derail my career, I was willing to risk it all to make a difference.

I could no longer sit idly by watching atrocities and injustices being committed against international travelers especially against women. I knew it was time to "make a stand." In October 1998, I made a life-altering decision. I became a Federal Whistleblower (truth-teller).

Americans love to travel abroad. Whether an experienced world traveler or preparing for a first trip aboard, all travelers love to venture beyond the boundaries of the United States. They enter into a world of passports, visas, consulates, foreign currency, immunizations, Customs, and importing areas about which most travelers have little knowledge or experience.

Picture This: You've worked hard and decide to reward yourself with a trip to a sunny destination beyond America's shores. At the end of your wonderful vacation, you board the plane for your return trip home. You arrive at the airport, but instead of making your way quickly and routinely through U.S. Customs, you find yourself being subjected to an abusive pat-down, intrusive strip-search, x-rayed, probed internally, fed a laxative, and handcuffed to a hospital bed for up to 4 days in a search for contraband. If you are African American, especially an African-American female, this scenario, it turns out, is all too likely.

After witnessing first hand a type of denigration against African-American travelers particularly women and successfully putting reforms in place to protect them, I realized something even more sinister was about to happen to the American people.

In March 2003, the Department of Homeland Security merged 22 federal agencies totaling over 180,000 employees. This included my agency, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Over 73,400 of these employees were armed, making this new department the MOST MASSIVE ARMED department ever in the history of the government.

What was more alarming is that the new department operated with excessive secretly. Excessive secrecy could be just as dangerous as a terrorist entering this country, so I set out on another journey to educate the American people about the practices in this new department.

I realized that unless some type of oversight was put into place, such as Citizen Review Boards, Independent Panels or Commissions --that my co-workers would eventually go back to their old ways of "singling out" or "targeting" certain international travelers and Department of Homeland Security employees who were speaking out against any and all types of injustices.

This book will make you aware of the extent of racial and sexual profiling--the blatant mismanagement, abuses of authority, prohibited personnel practices, corruption, nepotism, cronyism, favoritism, and other unethical practices carried out by federal law enforcement officials, what is being done to combat it, and how current attempts at reforms don't go far enough. A must read
I picked up the 9th edition when I got ready to retire and it saved me a lot of money and confusion and helped tremendously getting thru all the "red" tape. So a couple of years later as I get ready now to approach Medicare I need all the information I can get so I ordered the new 12 edition. Which included tons of updated information.. A recommend for anyone retiring and/or getting ready to go on Medicare

Worth the price
This book introduced me to how to "claim and suspend" retirement benefits. A higher wager earner can claim benefits at full retirement age; the other spouse then claims dependents benefits (which are often higher than the spouse's benefits); and then the higher earning spouse suspends his/her claim. The result is more money in your pocket. This advice by itself made the book worth the price. Because the book is clearly written and contains a wealth of useful information, I recommend it.

Good, But Not Perfect, Guide to Entitlement Programs
In my line of work, I deal with Social Security, SSI and Medicare rules and regulations every day, so I could be considered a bit of an authority on the subjects. I've always been skeptical of publications that want to "sell" you information that you could otherwise get for free, and this is no exception - nearly all the information on government benefits contained in this book can be obtained free of charge from the source. That said, this is a well-organized and clearly-written book. It will probably appeal to those who would like most or all the information they need in one handy resource, or those who - rightly or otherwise - would rather trust a third party for information that the agencies who administer them. One thing to keep in mind, though - the author of this book is NOT the final authority on the subject. Nevertheless, he does a good job presenting the basic requirements and peculiarities of Social Security, Medicare and government pensions in a clear,...

    Product Description

This field manual (FM) is the Army’s doctrinal publication for security force assistance (SFA). It provides doctrinal guidance and direction for how U.S. forces contribute to SFA. It focuses on the brigade combat team (BCT) conducting SFA and advising foreign security forces. It is based on lessons learned from previous advising efforts and recent combat operations with a view to the future. It supports the Army Education System instruction on the theory and conduct of SFA.

The two primary audiences for this manual are leaders in BCTs conducting SFA and Soldiers assigned as advisors. The BCT is the largest fixed tactical organization and the key formation of the Army’s modular organization. Army modularity allows commanders to add selective units to assist the BCT as it conducts SFA. The BCT and higher echelons provide the framework for advisors to function and accomplish the mission— developing foreign security forces and, when appropriate, working by, with, and through foreign security forces to achieve the desired end state of the host nation’s internal defense and development. Thus, Soldiers assigned as advisors are the key element of SFA.

This FM provides the conceptual framework for conventional forces to conduct SFA within the construct of full spectrum operations, across the spectrum of conflict. It addresses SFA at operational and tactical levels.

Army doctrine is consistent and compatible with joint doctrine. FM 3-07.1 expands on fundamental principles for SFA expressed in FM 3-07. FM 3-07.1 uses text and concepts developed with North Atlantic Treaty Organization partners and ABCA (America, Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand program armies).

Terms that have joint or Army definitions are italicized and the number of the proponent manual follows the definition. FM 3-07.1 will be the proponent manual for foreign security forces as a term.

FM 3-07.1 applies to the Active Army, Army National Guard/U.S. Army National Guard, and U.S. Army Reserve unless otherwise stated. Top to learn more

    Product Description

State governments have been recognized as the fusion point for a significant portion of policy, operational, and implementation activities for homeland security. Additionally, the most critical decisions for allocating resources and prioritizing efforts have been delegated to states. The federal government has required this role of states and has asked them to organize task forces to deal with these challenges but has provided little guidance about how states might establish, administer, and ensure effectiveness of these structures. States have begun to establish decision-making bodies independently, inconsistently, and with few measurements to evaluate effectiveness. This thesis provides a roadmap to success for individual state organizational approaches for Homeland Security. The recommendations are based upon an analysis of directives, expectations, national strategies, existing approaches and a case study of one state’s efforts. The call for organizing for the war on terror is acknowledged, accepted, and for the most part, vigorously answered. But how the nation’s states organize and to what ends their resources are applied will determine national and even international victory in this war. This project provides a model charter, recommended outcomes and outputs for a state structure, and several policy considerations for the State of Washington’s Homeland Security infrastructure. The bank data reveal that markets have deserted both Spanish government securities and... Just released Bank of Spain data shows that Spain accounts for 28% of all European Central Bank lending since December, when the ECB set about injecting a tidal wave of liquidity into the seizing European banking sector. If Spain should fail to meet its capital requirements on Tuesday and Thursday, it could easily trigger a flight from Spanish banks, government intervention to prevent their collapse, and then necessarily an EU bailout of Spain to keep the ECB from...

Corporations selling high yield bonds then have to pay a high rate of interest to get investors to buy their bonds, so the interest rate difference may be 6% or more. During an economic crisis, this spread rises, as investors sell speculative bonds and buy government as well as other less risky bonds. High yield bonds usually yield between four and 6 percent more than safer bonds. One strategy is to track the so-called interest “spread” between high yield and high grade securities. First, you can buy high grade bonds, often from governments. Don’t allow the bad reputation of high yield bonds stop you from seriously considering these as a source of high current income for your retirement portfolio. Now may be a good time to reconsider high yield bonds, because it’s among the only areas that offers a decent yield in today’s markets. For example, the two most common high yield bond ETFs (with ticker symbols JNK and HYG) currently have 223 and 446 different fixed income securities in their portfolios respectively. The same is true for a lot of of the available high yield bond mutual funds: they hold hundreds of individual securities, controlling some of the impact of default and capital depreciation. You can buy individual high yield bonds directly from the issuing corporation. But bear in mind that high yield issues are much riskier than many higher grade fixed income securities.

” It was the broadest possible hint that the ECB would buy more Spanish (or other) government debt if it felt it necessary to do so. That reassurance helped the euro to maintain its position against the US dollar and the pound. Investors will have at least one eye on another Italian bond auction today, this time of €5bn with a three-year maturity. The easing of tension came despite a disappointing German government bond auction. Yet the yields on longer-term Italian and Spanish government debt edged lower. We have an instrument, the securities markets programme, which hasn’t been used recently but it still exists. Helping them down was a comment from European Central Bank executive director Benoit Coeure, who said that Spanish “market conditions are not justified”. Overnight there will be a good deal of interest in Chinese figures for first-quarter economic growth, industrial production and retail sales. Less easy to explain away was Italy’s auction of one-year debt, for which it had to pay 2. The German Finance Agency shrugged off the matter, saying in an email that the sale was a “good result” in the context of “slightly increased uncertainty” on markets. At half past one come a rash of North American data: the Canadian and US trade balance plus US jobless claims and producer prices.

April 13 (Bloomberg) — The European Central Bank will restart its controversial government bond purchases rather than offer banks another round of unlimited three-year loans as the sovereign debt crisis worsens, a survey of economists shows. Debt markets rallied after the ECB’s three-year tenders in December and February as banks used some of the cheap cash to buy government bonds. Shares of Bankinter SA, a Madrid-based mortgage lender that used three-year funds from the ECB to acquire short-duration government bonds, have plunged 26 percent this year. Of 22 economists polled this week, 17 predicted the ECB will be forced to resume the Securities Markets Program, while only one forecast it will offer another batch of three-year cash. The effect on bond markets is waning now and banks are left with assets that investors are increasingly wary of, said Jacques Cailloux, chief European economist at Royal Bank of Scotland Group Plc in London. Investment in government debt by Spanish banks climbed to a record 246 billion euros in February, an increase of 20 percent from December, ECB figures show. ECB Executive Board member Benoit Coeure suggested on April 11 that the bank could resume its bond purchases, prompting Spain’s 10-year yield to retreat more than 10 basis points. Intesa Sanpaolo SpA, which snapped up 36 billion euros in three-year cash and partially used the money to buy Italian debt, has dropped 7.
