Life is A Process, Not An End.
Life is a process, not an end. If you don't enjoy the process, you're going to hate the end. I've read the ideas in this book many many times. Yet run through one more point of view is not a bad thing. Actually the author sums up the key to life well lived quite well in this thin book. Have meaningful goals, but enjoy the day to day process or realizing those goals. Appreciation is the key to life. The Psychic bank account. And then he applys them to school, to work, to love. And then he ends the book with meditations. Give it a try. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. The only criticism, yet not enough to substract a star, is that there are quite a few repeated ideas from his previous work. However, if you have a good idea, no harm in repeating that idea.

Years Later
I read this book during the lowest point in my life. Now that I look back, about 1.5 years later, it was the catalyst that put me on the road to recovery. A few minutes ago I was sitting in my room looking at my bookshelf and caught sight of the yellow spine. I thought, "Damn. I HAVE to write a review." The most significant observation in the book is that happiness is the ultimate currency. It's so basic, and so true. All this stuff that we do in life is for the purpose of gaining happiness. When I realized that status, possessions, relationships and accomplishments have no intrinsic value, I began to rethink my approach to life. The funny thing is, I do just about the same things today that I did back then. The difference is my experience of them. For me, it was matter of changing the way I motivated myself. For you it will probably be something else. I don't know if this self-help book is better than any other, but it was very valuable to me...

The little book is a philosophy of life which allows for ups and downs without having to give up present and future happiness. While other writers on happiness have said much of what Tal Ben-Shahar has said, and in more detail, the author has put the information together in a way new. Grounded in the revolutionary “positive psychology” movement, Ben-Shahar ingeniously combines scientific studies, scholarly research, self-help advice, and spiritual enlightenment. Great book, This is a daily gratitude workbook
I have to work to be happy. This year my youngest son died, then not 6 weeks later my father died. My mother followed 5 months later. My husband and I share the lessons so that we can focus on what is good in life and what we can still look forward to even after such a year of sorrow.

Encouraging, motivating, comforting, supportive, positive, and reassuring
Book review by Richard L. Weaver II, Ph.D. There are a number of reasons why I liked this 228-page (of text) book, the first of which is that it is very well written. Ben-Shahar is an engaging writer. Second, I found the book educational. Ben-Shahar includes six pages of references, then his four pages of notes are abbreviated, and all his notes come from his references. The way he incorporates his sources throughout the book is smooth and comfortable--not the least bit awkward. It will not take you, as a reader, long to discover that Ben-Shahar is not only well-educated, but the breadth of his knowledge is impressive as well. Third, I enjoyed his personal insights, stories, and references because they offer additional depth to the book. I thought the idea of moving from a perfectionistic point of view (or approach to life) to an optimalist is reasonable. Also, it is a move that people can accomplish with dedication, patience, and...

I really enjoyed ....being happy
Following the author's struggles with perfectionism was helpful to examine my own life. The concepts aren't earth shattering but the way the author illustrates them gives you a chance to examine your own life. I like the time in sections for journal writing topics.

A brilliant guide to living a happier life (even if it's not so perfect)

Bestselling author Tal Ben-Shahar has done it again. In Being Happy (originally published in hardcover as The Pursuit of Perfect, 978-0-07160882-4), he gives you not only you the theory but also the tools to help you learn how to accept life as it actually is instead of what you think it should be. By using the science of positive psychology along with acceptance, Ben-Shahar shows you how to escape the rat race and begin living a life of serenity, happiness, and fulfillment.

With the same technique that made Happier such a great success, Being Happy shows you how to let go of unrealistic expectations and truly accept your emotions for a more serene life.

Praise for Ben-Shahar:

You can be happy!
Being Happy was written to be an interactive experience, and I think that is a major reason why readers will enjoy it so much. Ben-Shahar provides self-reflective activities and "Time-in" questions throughout his book as a way to help readers locate their own maladaptive Perfectionist traits. More importantly, he provides guidance and advice through exercises that educate readers on how to successfully replace these qualities with ones that are more conducive to living a happier life. Whether it is writing a gratitude letter, completing a few short open-ended sentences, or keeping a journal about failure, Ben-Shahar finds creative ways to keep the reader involved. Ben-Shahar makes it his mission to prove to his readers that a Perfectionist can successfully become more like an Optimalist by making simple changes in his or her everyday routine. In Being Happy, Tal Ben-Shahar provides his readers with the advice and guidance they need to make significant changes in their...

How to recognize, understand, and cope with "destructive perfectionist tendencies"
In the poem "Richard Cory" written by Edward Arlington Robinson (1869-1935) and first published in 1897, the first two stanzas identify Cory as "a gentleman from sole to crown, /clean favored and imperially slim" who "fluttered pulses when he said, /`Good morning,' and glittered when he walked." Then in the two remaining stanzas, Robinson adds "And he was rich--yes, richer than a king-- And admirably schooled in every grace: In fine, we thought that he was everything To make us wish that we were in his place. "So on we worked, and waited for the light, And went without the meat and cursed the bread; And Richard Cory, one calm summer night, Went home and put a bullet through his head." In The Pursuit of Perfect, Tal Ben-Shahar explains that many people (as well as fictional characters) fail to lead a full and fulfilling life because they do not allow themselves "to experience the full range of human...

A unique research in positive psychology
I think the title of the book could be misleading for some people, as many wouldn't label themselves as perfectionists , Tal Ben Shahar proves in his theory that we all have struggles in perfectionism in one field of life or another which is very true to me. I prefer to call this book: The book of change, in which the author takes us into a journey of self reflections, self insights & subsequently a chance for a meaningful change only through the HARD WORK of sincere implementations of the exercises. His unique writing style mingles philosophy & the best of academic research in cognitive psychology all together in a persuasive presentation. The exercises are persuasive enough because they all stand on the solid ground of empirical evidence. What took me in awe were the closing 10 meditations, or better to call them the 10 wisdoms . In conclusion, a unique work indeed, bringing a deeper and more mature level, for a more happier life.

Loved this Book
I just finished reading this book on my Kindle and loved it. It had me laughing out loud, in fact my wife kept looking at me like I had lost my mind! She will read it next, than I can throw barbs at her. This book was funny, sarcastic, insightful and just downright a pleasure to read. Her style of writing is light and fun, but also very insightful into what her daily life is like living in Costa Rica. I can't wait to read her next book about her continuing adventures in this exotic land. I highly recommend this book !!

Great Summer Read
This book reminds me so much of A Year in Provence which I adored. An outsiders view of life in Costa Rica. It's full of the author's crazy experiences as she relocates her life and tries to acclimate to a totally foreign culture. Quirky situations, eccentric characters and lovely settings make you fall in love with this country and it's people. The e-book equivalent to a 2 buck chuck.

TWO PLANE TICKETS, NO PLAN, ONE DREAM

A celebration of one couple's decision to risk it all and live in one of the happiest places on earth.

In this humorous and witty account, Nadine Pisani shares what it is like to follow her dream of quitting her job and starting a new life under the sunny skies of Costa Rica. Along the way, she finds reliable utilities are not that reliable, quirky neighbors are unavoidable, and tackling red tape takes the strength of a linebacker. But with all its challenges, you'll learn why Costa Rica is ranked as one of the happiest places on earth--and you too may want to taste the Pura Vida lifestyle. Top to learn more

Funny, even hilarious, but needs copyediting
I enjoyed most of the stories in the book and the author does a great job at the buildup to the move. She makes Costa Rica sound like a wonderful place and details her transition from wigged out city dweller to laid back jungle cat with humor, both at her own expense as well as her husband's. The first half of the book is much stronger than the second half, and some of the vignettes seem like they came directly from a first draft rather than getting the polish they need.Sadly, the usage errors in the text (prospective vs. perspective, taught vs. taut, etc) were a big distraction for this reader. It's too bad the book didn't get more editorial attention -- it really deserves a good couple of rounds with the red pen. And by deserves, I mean that in the nicest way. I have spent money on flawless books that weren't nearly as good (or funny) as this one was. A star and a half deducted for the errors.

We get habituated to the familiar – note the difference between the excitement you feel the first time you experience something new and the fifth time you experience it. 8. Read a new kind of book, eat at a different restaurant, try listening to a different kind of music. According to researchers like Martin Seligman, Daniel Kahneman and Ed Deiner, money may be able to buy happiness, but only to a very limited extent. On the other hand, not having money – that is, a family income of less than 30,000 a year – is related to less happiness. But luckily, once your basic needs are being met, the increase in happiness from say, $31,000 to $131,000 a year, is really not that great. So, the question is, if money can’t buy happiness, what can. Things that are hard to buy. Hard to believe, isn’t it. Think of all of the time and energy we spend trying to attain more money, and it really doesn’t make that big of a difference. Try a new sport, go to the theatre, go somewhere new for your summer holidays. When you go for a massage, don’t think about all the things you have to do after, just focus on how nice it feels to be pampered at that moment. Rather than wait until you become stressed, be proactive and develop several relaxation tools that work for you and use them regularly. Regularly write down the things that you are grateful for. Just like your mother told you – lots of dark green and bright orange vegetables, at least 8 glasses of water per day, stay away from processed or fried foods, and eat sweet stuff only in moderation. There are an infinite number of things that we can do for others every day, at little cost to ourselves, but with great reward. Make time to call and see your friends. Try to do at least 20 minutes of cardio 4-5 times per week. Think of all the happy things you could do with all that freed up energy.

A person who makes, on average, $250,000 a year has no greater emotional well-being, no extra day-to-day happiness, than a person making $75,000 a year. The super-wealthy may believe they are happier, and you may agree, but you both share a delusion. The researchers discovered money is indeed a major factor in day-to-day happiness. According to the research, in modern America the average income required to be happy day-to-day, to experience &ldquo. Does money buy happiness. You need to make a certain amount, on average, to be able to afford food, shelter, clothing, entertainment and the occasional Apple product, but what spun top hats around the country was their finding that beyond a certain point your happiness... they dangle just outside your reach it seems, encouraging you to lean farther and farther over the edge, to study longer and longer, to work harder and harder. t buy happiness. Figure out what you love and then figure out how to get paid doing it. Maxims like these often find their way into your social media. The happiness money offers doesn&rsquo. The research by Daniel Kahneman and Angus Deaton, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, analyzed the lives and incomes of nearly half-a-million randomly selected U. S. citizens. does nothing for happiness, enjoyment, sadness, or stress. The Truth:  Getting paid for doing what you already enjoy will sometimes cause your love for the task to wane because you attribute your motivation as coming from the reward, not your internal feelings.

Participants felt significantly happier when they reflected on a time they had spent money on others, and this effect emerged consistently across these vastly different cultural contexts —even though the specific ways in which participants spent... Asked which of the two purchases made them happier, fully 57% of respondents reported that they had derived greater happiness from their experiential purchase, while only 34% reported greater happiness from their material purchase. When participants were contacted that evening, individuals who had been assigned to spend their windfall on others were happier than those who had been assigned to spend the money on themselves. For example, no one finds it surprising that people who have sex are happier than people who don’t (Blanchflower & Oswald, 2004), but some do find it surprising that the optimal number of sexual partners to have in a twelve-month period is one. Although personal spending was unrelated to happiness, people who devoted more money to prosocial spending were happier, even after controlling for their income. Another paper from Harvard happiness expert Daniel Gilbert (author of the bestseller  Stumbling on Happiness ) spells out 8 ways we can spend our money to increase happiness: (1) "Buy more experiences and fewer material goods. Why would people who have one partner be happier than people who have many. Dunn, Aknin, and Norton (2008) asked a nationally representative sample of Americans to rate their happiness and to report how much money they spent in a typical month on (1) bills and expenses, (2) gifts for themselves, (3) gifts for others, and...

However, if status is important to you, then having more money might make you a little bit happier. Convenience : A little extra money can buy a little more convenience. The ability to buy items of higher quality can be a bonus of having a little more money. When crops fail, you can just go buy food if you have money. What makes you feel “rich,” and could a little more money, properly used, help you feel richer. You can buy a better bed, other furniture, and other creature comforts. If those things are important to you, a little more money can help you feel better about what’s happening. Sometimes, the premium is worth it. Higher quality : Those without as much money, in some cases, are forced to purchase items of low quality.
