Excellent Quality
This DVD player has excellent up-scaling quality. The color quality is superior to the Philips dvp-3560/F7 it replaced. It almost looks like blu-ray quality. It plays dual layer discs without a hiccup. I used the digital out for sound and it is superior to the Philips as well. If are used to a display on your DVD player like I am there is none, but you can display the time with a touch of a button. It is a really small DVD player, but like I said in my review title "Excellent Quality". You will be very happy with this purchase.

Excellent picture compared to older models
We had a 3-yr old Sony DVD player but were not happpy with image quality on 42" LCD TV. Bought this newer sony and it is excellent. Much smaller, lighter, and a lot quicker to load/eject a disc. Image quality finally looks as good as all the display models in the stores. Compatible with all older Sony remotes, including a 15-year old one. Simply the best.

Very easy-to-use Reliable Upscaling DVD Player
I did not want to replace my extensive DVD library with new Blu-Ray movies for two reasons, #1 cost #2 I feel that Blu-Ray will soon be replaced. So, I wanted an upscaling DVD player. I previously had a Sony product that was virtually indestructable. By the way, it had an eject button on the remote that was NEVER used. My DVD player sits behind a closed glass door and I always had to open that door before ejecting. I went with a Sony product again because of reliability and low cost, and SONY did it again. I've had this one for about 6 months now and have no complaints whatsoever. It's just as reliable as the last one. I don't use the remote for this one either, I have a remote for my Pioneer Receiver that controls everything. I'm not what one would consider a huge afficianado as far as home theater is concerned, I like to put a disc (movie) in and watch it, period. This DVD player allows me to do just that. Karaoke Fun -- CD-g or DVD -- Bargain
I looked at a variety of much more expensive options but this is terrific. Instead of the tiny screens that you get on all-in-one karaoke gizmos, or paying for a microphone mixer to use a regular CD, DVD, or Blu-Ray player (that may not handle the CD-G format), you buy this, plus a microphone, and use your TV for karaoke fun. It has a variety of connection options--including HDMI (for the newer equipment) so you can plug in directly into a TV or into an AV amp. Santa gave us the wireless dual microphone setup from another Amazon Marketplace vendor and the only hitch is that you have to configure this player for Stereo or the mic level will seem too low.

Everything we needed and affordable....
This DVD player has worked flawlessly since we received it. We have not used the Karaoke function as of yet but it was bought to be the children's room player so it may never see a Karaoke disc, but it is there if we ever decide to. Great product at a great price!

Beware the 1080p HD upconverting feature.
First off let me say that I am not a tech geek so don't take this as if it came from the burning bush of audio-video worship. I do however have a basic understanding about HD images and what is needed to get one. If you are a tech geek and can find anything I did wrong in my setup, equipment or operation of the Magnasonic please jump in.I bought this DVD player based on the 1080p HD upconverting feature. The manufactor says with it you'll be able to enjoy all of your DVD's in 1080p HD. I have a large collection of DVD's and I thought I'd hit the jackpot finding a machine that could show them in 1080p HD...just like the PS3 does with Blu Ray discs.It comes with standard audio-video (yellow-white-red) jack cables...but not an HDMI cable. To support the Magnasonic upconverting DVD player I bought a Mediabridge Ultra Series High Speed HDMI Category 2 cable, that cost me another 16 bucks on top of the 44 I spent on the Magnasonic DVD player.I connected...

LITTLE SONY. . .
I purchased this for my own use as I have an extensive dvd collection. It is really handy to play a disc while there may be one on hold in my other player. The "Little Sony" plays very well, a lot like the same commands my large one has. One of the important things for me is to be able to see the status while it is playing..this has easy to read numbers that light up. The audio/video quality is excellent. About the only disappointment is the remote doesn't have a eject button but you have to insert the disc anyway so just press the button on the set. Overall I am very happy with this Little Sony, for the price you can't beat it!

Good DVD Player - Made by Phillips, not Sony unlike most Sony DVD Players
Unlike most of Sony's DVD players which are produced by Sony, this player is actually a rebranded Phillips/Yamaha player. Nonetheless, the build quality is still just as strong as Sony's own DVD players. I also own a Phillips DVD player with the same disc mechanism as this Sony, and so far, it has plugged along great for the last three years or so with frequent use. Overall, this player is ideal for use as a player for a bedroom or secondary tv, but if you are considering using this within a home theater setup, consider purchasing a player with an HDMI output to take advantage of HDMI's digital video output capability. Overall, this is a great buy!

A great upscaling player that won't drain your wallet
This little bad boy of a DVD player comes packed with features. There are 2 major reasons you should get this player1. The up-scaling on this player is very good. I have some DVD of older shows (like Babylon 5 and the original Star Trek, not remastered) and they never looked better! The image quality on the player is very good. While not 'top notch' like those $1000 up-scaling players, you are getting INCREDIBLE bang for the buck when it comes to the quality of your DVD image2. Region Free. When you first get the player it will be locked to Region 1. There is a code/hack to unlock the player that can be found on the web (and even in the review section here if you look hard enough).- Some say this player is slow to load but I actually find it very fast. Unbelievable Performance and Features For The Price!
I just received this DVD player tonight after struggling with a crappy Panasonic S-58 I purchased locally based on a few enthusiastic, albeit ill-conceived, reviews I came across on Amazon and elsewhere. I can't tell you how happy I am with this unit and the myriad ways in which it excels both my previous Phillips 3962 (rendered it useless due to a sticky rental from Netflix)and the previously mentioned Panasonic model (of sorry memory), but I'll make a feeble attempt by way of this brief review nonetheless:Image quality: The Phillips wins hands down here, offering what appears to my eyes at least to provide a level of picture quality (out of the box with ZERO adjustments) comparable to high-end units commanding upwards of three times the price. After noticing that some are selling region-free at inflated prices, here's a handy "do it yourself" guide to making yours region free. EASY: Just follow directions1. No DVD in the tray. The tray closed. The unit and TV on.2. Press "Setup" on the remote.3. Press the "down" arrow repeatedly until the top heading shows "Preferences."4a. Then press "OK" and Audio will be highlighted.b. Muti Region Code Instructions did not work!!
The Philips DVP3560 shipping box contained the instructions to enable it to be an all region player. The instructions did not work. It probably works on other Philips players but not this one.1. Please make sure there is no DVD inside the unit2. Press Setup3. Press the down arrow three times until you see the "preference page"4. Press 1,3,8,9,3,15. Press up/down key to select "0" <-THERE IS NO SELECTION TO BE MADE!!!!6. Turn off the DVD player Congratulations! Your DVD is now multi region.Luckily, I found the correct instructions on the internet. I only have had this player for one day. It is working well so far. Here is the correct instructions.1. This is the way to do all-region
American sellers don't sell all-region players. The players are all-region capable but are set to region 1. They need a code to get the all-region capability.This distributor (WorldWide Distributors) handled the all-region demand the right way. The item came sealed because the distributor didn't tamper with it. If you get a player from the US that plays all-region out of the box, the seller opened it and entered the code. This item was simply packaged with the sealed player and a sheet of very simple instructions for entering the code. I entered it and it played perfectly.I immediately tried a region 1 disc, then a PAL region 2, then a region 3, and back to region 1. No hiccups, no video quality problems. You may want to buy a cheap HDMI cable to get the 1080p options. I tested it with component hookups and it looks great, but without the HDMI cable it may stretch all full-screen TV shows to wide. Almost perfect
This is exactly the DVD player I've been looking for. It can play anything you throw at it and without a glitch. Make sure you run it through an HDMI connection if you're looking for HD quality.There are just couple of things that keep it from being perfect:For example you can't close the disc tray by pressing the same button you use to eject it. You close it by applying enough force to the DVD tray and unfortunately there's more resistance than I like. (**UPDATE**: The eject button on my unit had a change of heart and can now also close the disc tray flawlessly. I don't know how it fixed itself but I'm happy that it did).The remote control does not work unless you point it exactly at the DVD player and I haven't had to do it like this in years so it doesn't feel as responsive as what I'm used to.Those are all minor gripes and definitely not big enough to take off even one star.
