Best photography of any bee book I've seen so far.
This is a beautifully produced book with some really excellent photography; it should be mandatory to furnish dentist's waiting rooms with at least one copy (not only would it successfully distract the patients, but we'd also end up with more beekeepers in the world... and all of them with good teeth). The text is informative and straightforward (although I did find the chapter sequencing a little puzzling and personally would have preferred to see the gardening, honey and products chapters shuffled to the back and all of the essential beekeeping information consolidated). I found the chapter on gardening for bees to be especially interesting and relevant though, along with the plant-to-honey-type cross-reference table, and have been diligently planting seeds to provide my hives with some early spring blooms based on that content. The beekeeping information is as up to date as you'd expect for a 2008 book with, for instance, a reference to dusting the bees with icing sugar as a...

Cookie Cutters
They were just what I had hoped for(though the bee cutter is much smaller than the hive). Good construction and the merchant was prompt with delivery.

Bee and Hive Cookie Cutters
Our company logo is a bee and we call our studio "the hive" so we used these to make our guest favors for the Grand Opening. They arrived super quick and were the perfect size. (I actually purchased another bee hive cutter which as a baked cookie I didn't like the look of as much.Pics of our finished product are on our facebook page...search for BotanicAllure to see them in our Hivewarming Gallery. :-)

Great first book for those wishing to keep bees
In order to get off to a good start at beekeeping, one must understand the honey bee (I've taught beekeeping classes for over 30 years). This is not a step-by-step set of instructions, nor does it promote any specific equipment or method, but rather offers the wisdom of a master beekeeper and bee scientist distilled into a very easy-to-read handbook. I'd consider this book to be a great first read about beekeeping, in order to get a factually accurate overview of what goes on in a bee hive, without getting bogged down in the details of equipment and specific management.

Great resource book for all small scale beekeepers
I've been keeping bees on a small scale for 15 years and still learned a lot from this book. It is good to know some bee biology and at the same time how to have fun with your bees. Dr. Gary has a light hearted approach to beekeeping because that really is how he is. What a combination...science and fun! I urged anyone who wants to start beekeeping to read this first.

Trusted advice from an expert in the field
I was surprised to see that this book got a 2-star review...what that reviewer refers to as "old" techniques are actually proven methods of keeping bees based on Dr. Gary's years of experience and education. As a beginner, that's exactly the kind of advice I trust and appreciate. I found this to be a very helpful, thorough, and easy-to-follow guide.

A Honey Of A Book
Honey is actually one of the healthiest foods you can eat, but not just any honey - honey that is made by bees in your local area is by far the best. That's why I have been looking into keeping my own bees and the reason for reading this book. Inside I was amazed to find detailed information about what actually goes on inside the hive and the role of each type of bee. Also, found some great information on hive placement and how to control the flight path (I never knew you could do this) so that your neighbors aren't bothered by your bees. This book is great for any homeowner thinking of keeping bees.

Buzzing with information about what goes on in the beehive!
I have been a beekeeper for many years and this is one of the best accounts I have read of what actually goes on in the beehive. Beekeeping can sound scary for beginners and anyone who is thinking of keeping bees should find out as much as they can about the complex world of the honey bee. Frank Randall's book explains all the basics in language that anyone can understand and he goes into all the necessary detail about the lifecycle of the honeybee and the workings of the hive. Anyone who keeps bees will tell you that beekeeping is a constant learning process and Frank's book is a great place to start.

The #1 Amazon Besteller in both featured categories, 'Entomology' and 'Insects & Spiders'

Hello!

Thankyou for taking the time to look at my book.

If you have a taste for honey or an adventurous side, maybe you have thought of becoming a beekeeper. What would you really be in for, though? Is it really a job, or is it a fun way to get your own honey? Well, it's really both.

Being a beekeeper is a lot of work, but it also has a lot of benefits. Anyone can do it, as long as they know to be prepared. You can't just wake up one day and decided to be a beekeeper and start immediately without knowing what you are doing.

That's why I have written this book. Within its pages, you will find out what tools you need to be a beekeeper, what to expect from your hive, how to harvest your honey and how to protect the hive from various problems and invaders. I'll teach you what types of bees are best to keep, the jobs of each bee in the hive, how to choose and position your hives and more.

Apiculture is complicated and very involving on even the smallest scale. But it is incredibly rewarding and can be a unique part of you life, as well as a beneficial influence to the environment, both locally and globally.

Oh, eating the honey from your very own hive is rather wonderful too!

When I started keeping bees, I spent a lot of time and money on a lot of books before I was sure that apiculture was going to be a part of my life.

This easy to read, beginners book, summarizes the essential information I have learned over the years, and is written to help you decide if beekeeping will fit into your life.

Best wishes,

Frank

Interesting and helpful primer on bee-keeping
I'm interested in gardens, flowers and so on. I want to attract more bees so have been looking into bee-attracting plants. A friend of mine suggested I could also keep a hive, so I got this book.I'm glad I did - it not only kept my attention on an interest level (what goes on inside the hive, types of bee, etc), it also gave me things to think about that I hadn't even considered - flight paths and bee diseases, for example. This is a good primer for anyone wishing to start out in the bee-keeping field.

Riegel, a retired state trooper and a beekeeper for 37 years, said he supplies 25,000 pounds of honey each year to Redner’s Markets. Riegel, who lives in Centre Township, estimated that his bees produced 13,000 pounds of honey in a single season about 10 years ago. “One beekeeper I use every year told me he did not have any bees to offer me this year. “The bee population is going down and down and down,” said Nemeth, executive vice president at Ontelaunee Orchards, which has acreage in Ontelaunee and Bern townships and Leesport. Thirty years ago, Keeney said, about 2 percent of his bees would die during the winter. A portion of the honey is produced by Riegel’s bees. “I tell new beekeepers that I know less about bees than I did 30 years ago,” he said. “Flower to flower,” Nemeth said, eyeing a single bee. The disorder, said veteran Bethel beekeeper Dennis C. Keeney, is not well-understood, but it lessens bees’ ability to survive. Other problems that have plagued bees in recent years include mites, loss of habitat and a relatively new phenomenon called colony collapse disorder. For reasons that are not fully understood, the health of bees has been in decline for years. That meant Riegel had to buy 22,000 pounds from other beekeepers to meet his Redner’s commitment.
