If you love fashion history this is a must have
I received this book as a Christmas gift and it is simply wonderful. As a shoe lover I have been given many 'shoe books' over the years--many of which are simply art books showcasing some wacky designs--but this one is different. It offers a thorough history of shoe manufacturers and retailers (many long gone but nonetheless significant) and highlights brands that everyday women wore or still wear. There are some beautiful photos of the shoe styles of our mothers and grandmothers, as well as many current designers of 2010. I was especially intrigued by the vintage shoe ads from newspapers and magazines scattered throughout. This is not a precious art book but rather a wonderfully illustrated encylopedia that offers some delicious eye candy along with a fascinating history of shoe brands. Please note: The cover of this book is different than pictured above; please see Customer Images for a photo of the actual cover.

great new book for shoes - 1950s-today!
Hi,We just got a copy of Jonathan Walford's new book, "Shoes A-Z, Designers, Brands, Manufacturers and Retailers and love it! Anyone who loves shoes will certainly not be disappointed, tons of fascinating info and beautiful photos of hundreds of to-die-for shoes! It's hard to pick a favorite, but the Chelsea Cobbler purple leathers 60s boots, with sun, moons & stars would have to be it... or maybe the stained glass Peter Kaisers 1970s boots on pg. 183 ... or the "faces" multicolored Sergio Rossi's on pg. 208?... Shoes A-Z
An encyclopedic look at the most famous shoe designers and brands starting from the 1950s onwards. The book covers most of the known labels in an alphabetic format. The text is clear and informative to give just the right about of information about each designer and his/her sources of inspiration. The book is also loaded with clear color photos representing the creations of the featured designers along with some interesting advertisements. The book is not a complete history, but kind of an illustrated overview and it succeeds in this respect.A worthy addition for any shoe lover and fashion in general.

Product Description

A brilliantly illustrated compendium of shoe designers, brands, manufacturers, and retailers since 1950.

“I did not have three thousand pairs of shoes. I had one thousand and sixty.”—Imelda Marcos

In recent years shoes have become objects of fanatical devotion, as covetable designs have gained iconic status and shoe designers have become heroes of popular culture. From Christian Louboutin’s signature red sole and the Manolo Blahnik heels that helped to define Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw to the eco-friendly footwear of the future, shoes are now a fashion statement all their own.

Is there such a thing as a leading shoe fashion anymore? The silhouettes, colors, and details on the feet of models and in the pages of fashion magazines used to be the ultimate in style, but they no longer represent all fashion footwear any more than haute couture represents all fashionable clothing. Renowned fashion specialist Jonathan Walford recounts the fascinating history of more than 350 leading women’s shoe designers and manufacturers who have shaped modern footwear over the last sixty years. A rich array of sketches, photographs, and advertisements highlight superlative craftsmanship and lasting trends.

Featuring designs by Bally, Beverly Feldman, Camper, Charles Jourdan, Chie Mihara, Christian Louboutin, Ferragamo, Herman Delman, Jimmy Choo, Joan & David, Kenneth Cole, Manolo Blahnik, Maud Frizon, Roger Vivier, Rupert Sanderson, and Sergio Rossi. 350 color and 50 black-and-white photographs and illustrations Top to learn more

Great little book on cultivating compassion
I really like this little book. Hudson serves on the pastoral team at Northfield Methodist Church in Benoni, South Africa. The book is primarily about cultivating compassion but I believe it has much to say about spiritual formation and living a missional life as well.In chapter one Hudson describes the birth of a Pilgrimage of Pain and Hope, an eight day pilgrimage experience for his largely middle-class suburban congregation. Hudson describes it as an "immersion into the struggles and joys of our suffering neighbors."Illustrating that Christian groups have not always approached such attempts with the proper posture, I appreciated that Hudson shared the concerns of friends and colleagues who ministered in possible pilgrimage sites with comments like "come as pilgrims, not tourists; as learners, not teachers; as listeners, not as talkers."After the first Pilgrimage of Pain and Hope Hudson committed to three things: (1) He would plan for his...

Product Description

"Love your neighbor as yourself."

With this imperative, Jesus made compassion for others central to the Christian life. Being personally and deeply aware of the suffering of our neighbors (both near and abroad) requires deep listening and action.

As we should, we're quick to pray for victims of tsunamis, casualties of war and starving children, but has prayer become a way to avoid taking real action? Are we only attentive to suffering over there while detached from the desperate needs of many among whom we live and work?

Hudson issues a challenging charge to pay attention all around us and to engage in the spiritual disciplines that enable us to see, hear and respond to the living Christ in our midst.

In the dark period of South Africa's history, the author developed an eight-day experiential program called The Pilgrimage of Pain and Hope. He designed it to enable comfortable, young middle-class South Africans to reflect on the meaning of their faith and discipleship within the harsh and oppressive socio-political realities of their nation. From this experience grew a pattern to help all Christians cultivate the depth of compassion Christ requires.

"We seldom become more compassionate without working at it,"" writes Hudson. ""One practical way to cultivate compassion involves building the pilgrimage experience into our lives. ...The risen Christ meets us in the lives of those who suffer."

Learn and experience the three essential ingredients of both an inward and outward pilgrimage: 1. Encounter involves confronting the pain of our shattered and fragmented societies. 2. Reflection comes through daily meditation on scripture in light of the encounters you have. 3. Transformation into greater Christlike-ness comes as a gift.

Through these ingredients, pilgrims learn to be present wherever they are, with whomever they meet, and whatever they see as they go about their daily tasks.

Questions at the close of each chapter guide the thoughts of individuals and groups as you consider becoming a daily-life pilgrim. Top to learn more

Excellent within its parameters
I waffled between 4 and 5 stars for this. I think Peacock could do with some slightly more accurate titles. This is a history of western European shoes, with ancient Mesopotamia, Greece and Egypt thrown in for length. Beyond those, there is nothing on even eastern Europe, let alone Asia, Africa, etc. I also suspect from his books that Peacock does not really approve of our casual age. I saw only a single tennis shoe; none of the clogs and earth shoes that were so typical of the late 1960s and early 1970s; and none of the elaborate athletic shoes. Peacock does say that he is focusing chiefly on fashionable shoes, but I think that the high-end athletic shoes qualify as designer models, even if the other don't.Given that, it's wonderful for what it does cover. Men's shoes are included. My favorite part is the ancient shoes; I have never seen such a variety illustrated. The pages have small but clear drawings of usually 7 or 8 shoes per page, with minimal...

Give Thanks for this is as Good as it Gets
You really must give thanks to the author for having given us this book. As usual it is peerless in the degree of historical accuracy and detail that his illustrations unfailingly provide. Morever, it is one of the rare books that give us as much insight into men's footwear as it does into the history of women's footwear.Of course it would have been nice to have detailed photographs of original ancient footwear or even those from a century or two ago. Sadly, many specimens have not survived at all or at often at best are in poor condition and are kept hidden from regular open exhibition at textile museums that do own them due to their fragility. In most cases the original appearances of the footwear have to be reconstructed using paintings and published period sources along with a dash of imagination. The results are illustrations that bring to life what the historic examples would have looked like to a far greater degree than pictures of old footwear delapidated beyond...

Product Description

The most comprehensive and detailed history of shoes ever published, with more than 2000 specially drawn illustrations.

John Peacock charts the development of every kind and style of footwear from earliest times to the present day, for both men and women. His drawings reproduce in meticulous detail a host of representative examples from every era: the simple sandals of Ancient Egypt, made from natural fibers; exquisite Greek footwear of the "Golden Age," including boots made from rawhide with leather linings and leg bindings; richly embroidered and bejeweled shoes of the Byzantine empire; the fantastic pike-toed boots newly fashionable in the fourteenth century; the hugely exaggerated platform heels of the sixteenth century; eighteenth-century women's slippers of the finest silk; and a huge range of contemporary shoes, from sneakers and stilettos to the latest footwear in radical materials and experimental styles.

The pictures are arranged in six chronological sections and accompanied by full descriptions, including details of materials, heel and toe styles, decorations, and fastenings. An invaluable reference section includes a time chart summarizing the development of shoes throughout the centuries, a concise bibliography, and biographies and histories of the world's leading shoe designers and manufacturers, including Manolo Blahnik, Salvatore Ferragamo, Charles Jourdan, Roger Vivier, and Vivienne Westwood.

This encyclopedic survey, with its colorful and detailed illustrations, will become the unrivaled reference work in its field, indispensable to any shoe enthusiast, designer, or collector. Over 2,000 illustrations, 800 in color Top to learn more

Great Hiking and Exploring Boots
I bought these to do some summer hiking in the Rocky Mountains and Black Hills of the American West. They were awesome. Comfortable, warm, and durable. Even when on the the East Coast I use these when I do Urban Exploration and Ghost Hunting in rugged areas such as abandoned asylums and forests.

Favorite boots ever
I've been wearing hiking type boots for over 25 years. I work in manufacturing and I'm on my feet all day, plus a steel toe is required. These boots look good (I actually get comments) and they are very comfortable. Not too heavy but light, but not too light like a wanna be steel toe boot/shoe. They keep a good look even after kicking pallets around all day, so I wear them after work too. I hope Wolverine never stops making these!

wonderfully displayed
This "index" of shoes shoes how people (particularly females) have gone through years and years with that one friend(or several in some people's cases). That one friend is "the shoe." I have always had a shoe fetish, ever since I was a young child. And when I found a book on this subject, I was quite surprised that someone would actually write about the topic: shoes. Well I have come to realize that this author, Linda O'Keeffe is an extraordinary author, and I wish to read more of her books!

Fun, funny, fascinating, informative
This book is so much fun! I bought a copy for my (equally) shoe-crazy aunt, and she and I cackled for hours reading about the scandalous sandals and far-out footwear displayed. The pictures were fabulous! The author has a great sense of humor, as well as of style. Some of those shoes are soooo snazzy! This book also was interesting in that we were able, by the shoes that they wore, to see the role of women in society in various ages and countries. This book also makes an excellent "bathroom book," lotsa quick quips and eye-catching pics. Whether you are looking for a history of the shoe, an introduction into shoe styles or stylists, or an opportunity to seethe with shoe lust, this book fits the bill.
