Introduction to the American Legal System
In Law 101, the author attempts to explain major concepts found in American law and the legal system without going into the finer detail. He succeeds.Major concepts covered in this book include constitutional law, basic rights, tort law, contract law, property law, and criminal law. Also covered are the litigation process in civil suits and criminal trials. Each of these subjects covers a lot of things, but the author has managed to succinctly summarize each one into the major things that need to be known in order to understand each topic. He also brings in famous and important court cases that really show how the law is applied to different situations. From important cases such as Marbury v. Madison or Roe v. Wade to more infamous cases such as when a woman scalded herself after spilling hot coffee and was able to successfully sue McDonald's.Even with the amount covered in this book, it still is only the tip of the iceberg. It really opened my eyes...

complete & precise
Outstandingly well written! It covers the first year law school courses. Well organized and very informative. Not written in "leagalease". Essential reading for the non-lawyer needing a general knowledge of the law. I'm not a lawyer and have read several books on the general subjet of law. This book is far above the others in writing style, comprehensive, and the amount of info covered. I bought it as a "necessary" read, but was surprised at how well it is organized. A pleasant and informative read! I strongly recommend it

Product Description

The first two editions of the best-selling Law 101 provided readers with a vividly written and indispensable portrait of our nation's legal system. Now, in this third edition, Jay M. Feinman offers a fully updated survey of American law that incorporates fresh material on 2009 Supreme Court cases, the legal response to the war on terror (including the Guantanamo detainees and electronic surveillance), and to the latest developments in Internet law.

In a book brimming with legal puzzles, interesting anecdotes, and thought-provoking questions, Jay M. Feinman's clear introduction to the law provides us with a solid understanding of the American legal tradition and covers the main subjects taught in the first year of law school. Readers are introduced to every aspect of the legal system, from constitutional law and the litigation process to tort law, contract law, property law, and criminal law. Feinman illuminates each discussion with many intriguing, outrageous, and infamous cases, from the scalding coffee case that cost McDonald's half a million dollars, to the sensational murder trial in Victorian London that led to the legal definition of insanity, to the epochal decision in Marbury v. Madison that gave the Supreme Court the power to declare state and federal law unconstitutional. He broadens the reader's legal vocabulary, clarifying the meaning of everything from "due process" and "equal protection" in constitutional law to the distinction between "murder" and "manslaughter" in criminal law. Perhaps most important, we learn that though the law is voluminous and complex, it is accessible to all.

Everyone who wants a better grasp of current legal issues--from students contemplating law school, to journalists covering the legislature or the courts, to fans of Court TV--will find here a wonderful source of information: a complete, clear, and colorful map of the American legal system. excellent introduction to law
For those with an interest in learning what the law is all about, this is a really great place to start. As others have mentioned, it will be an excellent choice for those who are contemplating law school or paralegal studies. The author does a great job of condensing important information on a variety of different areas within the law, and making them interesting by putting the material into context with everyday life. Since the author wants to make the point that the law is something that can be accessible and understood by all, the writing is in a user-friendly and very readable style. This book is worthwhile and enjoyable reading for anyone with even the slightest interest in American law.

Decent Overall Review of Law
The book basically does what it claims it's going to do. It gives you a clear and relatively simple overview of the American legal system. Furthermore, it constantly uses Supreme Court cases as a way of showing how certain laws were created and constantly changed over time as standards changed. The writer doesn't get preachy or starts to discuss complicated theories and philosophies about law. He simply educates the reader on practical matters of our legal system. Some examples include how a typical case reaches the courtroom, the different kind of jobs attorneys and lawyers have, and how to write a legitimate will that will be recognized by law. Overall, it's a great book for anyone that might be interested in Law School in the future or just someone that wants to be knowledgeable about the basic concepts of law.

Law student 101
As a first year law student, I purchased this book before the start of my semester hoping to have a little insight into what was about to come. The book is basic, informative and I find myself referring to it when we cover some less than crystal-clear topics in class. A great purchase for anyone even the least bit interested in how our legal sytem (should) work!

Great, short book
I believe this book is transcribed from a speech given by Holmes to a group of lawyers, judges, scholars at HLS. It is Holmes' prediciton for the future of the law and it is extremely prescient. For anyone interested in the law it is a must read, and at about 34 pages a very quick and enjoyable one.

A must read
This book is cited in a lot of my case books as well as many other written materials I have seen and read in law school. Holmes is a brilliant judge and this book is interesting and educational. It is a little pricey, being that it is only like 20 or so pages (I can't recall the exact page number but it is very short). The last 5 or 6 pages were blank in it...In short, if you can get it from a library or a friend to read it, do that instead of buying it because it will not take you very long to read and I don't see it being one of the books you HAVE to own. Hope this helps.

I take it for granted that no hearer of mine will misinterpret what I have to say as the language of cynicism. The law is the witness and external deposit of our moral life. Its history is the history of the moral development of the race. The practice of it, in spite of popular jests, tends to make good citizens and good men. When I emphasize the difference between law and morals I do so with reference to a single end, that of learning and understanding the law. Top to learn more

The real truth.
"What the jury didn't hear." You hear it all of the time on almost every news program. The fact is a jury needs to hear and learn ALL of the information. Granted nobody is above the law, but a jury IS above the law that is on trial. Say, for example, that you go to court because your dog ran into the street and bit somebody. You will be on trial and so will the leash law. If the jury feels the leash law is a good one, they will find you guilty. If the jury feels the leash law is bad, they can over rule the law, get rid of it, and find you innocent. Remember, the people are in charge and the politicians are here to serve them. Judges and lawyers are only third parties set in place to settle disputes. It is a great system! However, as of late, corrupt judges have withheld valuable information from the jury. Even worse, they have instructed the jury on how to vote, often saying: follow the law. Or, follow my instructions. What is the point? If a jury has to follow the...
