Great book. A good companion to the factory manual, however it does not replace the factory manual. This books gives general instructon, the factory manual give information specific to your engine.

good for beginners
The book is great for boaters and novice engine repair persons. I now have a working knowledge of outboard engines. My only criticism is that while the line drawings are reasonably sharp, the black and white photos are dark and murky and are just poor quality. perhaps the publisher should have specified a higher quality of paper.

i purchased this motor to use with my 9'8" inflatable boat. the motor started on my 3rd pull and ran very well. the manual that comes with the motor is not very good, many of the pictures and explanations are poor. I am happy with the motor

You can save a lot of money with this book
I read a review of this book in Messing About it Boats and had to order it. It is a clearly written, easy-to-follow guide to handling one of the last relatively simple machines available to consumers. There are a lot of old outboards around because many of them were used only lightly-so a thirty year old OMC may have had less than 100 hours of use. Good, but restricted to real old OMC engines
Good book, but almost totaly dedicated to old (I meam old, like 50's to late 60's) OMC engines. The reason is well explained in the begining of the book, and it makes sense in a country like US or other places with strong presence of OMC outboards, however here in Brazil the market share OMC have is about the same the Japanese brands also have, and 50's to 60's outboards are real rare. So, for someone in Brazil, it's best look for some other book. However, if you are in US and likes to play with motors, this book may help in finding a good old pair of motors and put them in running condition.

The Old Outboard Book
I grew up on a lake and so was around boats and outboards most of my life. My Dad had a book on outboards that was writen by one of his friends. When Dad died I looked for it, but could not find it. I checked with Amazon.con and was told it was out of print. They did have Peter Hunn's book however. I liked the review and bought it. When it came, I could not put it down. For anyone interested in outboards, it has a wealth of information. I found it well written and easy to follow. Mr. Hunn gives the history of the major brands and many I had never heard of. It is amply illistrated and shows a sampling of engines from almost the turn of the century through the mid '60s. If you find an old motor and want to know when it was built, it's in there. If you want to know what spark plug is recomended for your Dad's old fishing motor, it's in there. If a meighbor wants to know what his grandfather's row boat motor is worth, It has guide lines for that also. It even covers toy outboards. It has...

Excellent introduction to the history of the outboard motor.
The Old Outboard Book by Peter Hunn is an excellent overview of the origins of the outboard motor and its development. The book covers the pioneers of the industry like Ole Evinrude, the third grade educated motor builder who was full of ingenuity. It tells the tale of Carl Kiekhaefer, the mechanical engineer whose stumbling onto a few leftover motors in the manufacturing plant he bought led to the creation of Mercury Marine, one of the largest producers of outboards today. As an enthusiast of old outboard motors, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a subject which is very difficult to find information on, and this book is a very good starting point. The basics of collecting are covered, such as what to look for, how much to pay, etc. There is also some basic technical information for old outboards from both major and minor manufacturers, as well as some very good illustrations. Product Description

So Far, So Good with Coleman 2.6 hp
So far the motor is running well and started on my 2nd pull. I have yet to test it in a real world water environment and will not be able to do that until spring, but in the test tank, the motor ran well. I was a little worried when the box showed up with some oil stains on it, but I believe those were on the outside and not anything leaking from the motor in the box. All I can say is that my experience so far has been okay and I am hoping it will run will when I finally have it on the lake. The fact that the motor is made in China for Coleman does not really bother me as it does some people since China pretty much makes everything these days, so good luck trying to buy something that isn't at least partially made there!
