These reels are well made, cool looking, and smooth. I fish for freshwater catfish and these reels are working extremely well so far. I have them loaded with 30 lb. test line and they cast great. I have only owned them for a month but in my opinion these are some of the best reels for fresh and saltwater for the price. An Excellent Product
I bought this in December and took it to Fiji. Used it extensively for three weeks and was impressed. This is an excellent reel for Casting from shore. Pulled in some small barracudas and it handled vey well. Top to learn more

Great reel
This reel has a very smooth drag, the same drag as the Penn Conquer. The large spool is great for large amounts of line, mono or braid. Also the spool comes with backing so it is ready for braided line. I have recommended this reel to several friends who have bought it and they were not disappointed. If you were thinking about a Penn SSg or SSm, I would say get the Penn Battle instead.

Great reel
I got this reel when it first came out and have put some hours on it.I fish in the salt water at least 4 times a week so the reel does show some signs of wear and tear but overall it has held up very well. I really like the smooth drag and the spool with the rubber on it so if you are using braid it wont start slipping. Pair it with an Ugly Stick intercoastal and it is a great tool to get the reds on the flats or battle the big drum at the bridges. Great reel and well worth the price. Hope this review helped.

I want another one....or two
The Penn Battle may be my new favorite reel, certainly the best for the money. I have Shimanos that cost twice what this reel cost and although they are a little lighter than the Penn I find myself reaching for this reel more often. The drag on this reel is great and with just a simple freshwater spray at the end of the day it is showing no effects of being out in the Florida saltwater conditions it's seen. I'm putting another one on my wish list.

great entry level salt water reel
It is a Penn, so it should last for years. Be aware that it's small size will prevent you from mounting it on a 6'6" or larger casting rod; however, it will fit on any saltwater rod. I recommend this reel for anyone using a small rod with light line (20lb and lower) for anything else I would go with the 209. It is a larger, easier to use reel that looks exactly the same and also comes with rod mounting hardware, that the 9M does not. Top to learn more

Fine Reel!
I have has the Penn 330 GTi for 3 years now. I have fished striper, bluefish, shark and king mackeral all without a bit of trouble. Some say the level wind isn't good for saltwater. I respectfully disagree. The levelwind works great and keeps you focused on fighting the fish. No need to worry about the line bunching up in one area of the spool. I really like the reel! Great reel
Good rugged fairly large reel, made in USA. I use mine for halibut and tuna. Always works with no problems, and being a Penn you can always get repair parts and they are easy to clean and repair. Not as nice as Penn Internations, but nmowhere near the price either. I have owned mine for a year or two and no problems. Top to learn more

Good enough
I like this expensive reel and it has worked well during the short time I've owned it. However, I have the first edition of the 750ss reel and although the 650 feels smoother, the 750 bail operation is more solid and the 750 feels more powerful when reeling in my line. At this price and in this day, I expected the new 650 to be noticeably better than the old 750, not the opposite. I regret not taking a closer look at Okuma because of my past experience with Penn. 4 stars because I still think the 650 is a nice reel, I'm just not sure it should cost so much. Top to learn more

I use this reel kayak fishing in saltwater so I know I push it to its limits but I had high expectations for a Penn reel. However, I was in the middle of a nice trip during Rockfish season and the reel started randomly getting stiff and locking up on me. I am not sure if I got salt in it or some sand but it stopped being the smooth go to reel that it had been. As a side note I had an issue when I first purchased it where the reel handle feel off while I was hiking into a site to do some backwaters fishing. I bought this reel for surf fishing in Southern Cal. I hand this reel to the shimano fans and they are impressed by the smoothness.
Nowadays reel companies just take a dump, decorate it w/ eye catching design, and market it as quality but within 6 months its toast. ’ They’re good for about 6 months of regular use, I have quite a collection of busted spinning reels in my garage. The older American made reels are much better, more durable parts, and were cheaper. The modern day taxman is like Sir Guy of Gisbon coming for your chickens and pigs to give to the king to fund the crusades or today… Iraq etc.
