The most user-friendly Rattlesnake book around!
"Rattlesnakes Of The United States & Canada" is the most recent publication by author and photographer Manny Rubio and a book anyone interested in Rattlesnakes should own. Aside from the wonderful photography, I find this book really "user-friendly". For those familiar (or not) with the Rattlesnakes of North America this is the carry-with book to have. Species accounts and range maps are thorough and easy to follow. Included in the accounts are venom potential, habitat, conservation status and population threats. I keep a "just-in-case" copy in my car. And for the money, it's a great buy! You will not be disappointed.

very interesting and helpful on several levels
This is an excellent book, very well written and the photographs are beautiful. But what really appeals to me about this book is that you can just look at the pictures and be more than satisfied, or you can scan the text and read bits here and there and be enthralled and fascinated for hours, or you can study this and go even deeper. And it works very well on all three levels. What I found most helpful were the excellent maps on the locations of each species and the 90 pages of general information on rattlesnakes which starts off the book. It's clear, concise, easy to follow, and full of surprising and interesting tidbits and facts. In addition to the general information at the front of the book, each species is given around 8 - 10 pages of photographs and information. It's fascinating and is by far the best of the books I've looked read on rattlesnakes in my quest to get over my "concern" of them! And the most helpful as well. But really I think...

A great addition to any natural history library!
Rattlesnakes of the United States and Canada is the perfect follow up to Manny Rubio's first book Rattlesnake - Portrait of a Predator. This book is set up in a very readable "field guide" format with some of the most amazing and beautiful photographs of rattlesnakes I have seen. I appreciate that the author has taken the time to show the reader multiple photographs of each species to bring across the point that the range of colors and patterns within an individual species can be extremely variable and that mutants and hybrids do occur in nature. The photos in combination with the maps and accurate natural histories of each species make this book a valuable reference for the seasoned field biologist as well as the backyard naturalist. This book is a "must have" for anyone who has a serious interest in these fascinating creatures.

A truly interesting book
I read this book in the mid 90's just for the heck of it, and found it to be wonderful. The style is neither dryly academic nor breathlessly tabloid, but just right. The text answers almost all possible questions about rattlesnake life, legends, myths, and taxonomy that one could think of. It is one of the few books I have read that could be used as either a reference or vacation book.

decades after it's publication, still the best!
This book is still the best book on rattlesnakes, decades after it was published. That alone ought to stand as a testament to the value this book has. The author brought an incredibly analytical mind to this book, and it shows. Some of the medical information is out of date, as is some of the taxonomy, but much on the habitats, morphology, ecology, interaction with man, etc. still holds true. His work on the rattlesnakes strike, on comparitive morphology of the two genera, etc. still stand. This book covers rattlesnakes in incredible depth, going over every detail of these serpents. It's a godsend for those of us interested in rattlers. This book leaves no stone unturned (herping joke, sorry). It covers it's subject matter completly and professionally, and is well worth having on the bookshelf as a reference. If you like rattlers, or for that matter find zoology interesting, this book is a worthwhile read. If only more herpetological text were near as thorough as this...

Product Description

This virtual encyclopedia of the rattlesnake became a natural history sensation when it was first published in 1956. The republication of the Second Edition, with a new foreword by Harry W. Greene, will give amateur and professional herpetologists alike reason to rejoice. Volume 1 covers taxonomy, physiology, and behavior; Volume 2 concentrates on the rattlesnake's interactions with other organisms, including humans. Klauber's detailed and thorough study is still one of the most complete rattlesnake references ever published.Greene's Foreword discusses the initial impact and continuing value of Klauber's work and recounts some of the advances in knowledge of rattlesnake biology during the past 25 years. Also included is an update of rattlesnake taxonomy.

A wonderful look at a fascinating subject.
I have always been fascinated by rattlesnakes, ever since living in the heart of California's rattlesnake country as a young lad. This book covers the subject in loving and fascinating detail, with loads of superb photographs which splendidly support the excellent text. These are magnificent and beneficial animals and the author does a superb job of writing about them.My only criticism of the book is that it spends a lot of time dealing with human activities as regards rattlesnakes, such as the notorious "rattlesnake roundups," which the author rightly explains to be unconscionable predations by man against innocent and essential creatures. I would have rather seen even more space devoted to a pure scientific study of rattlers. But this is a minor quibble, and many will doubtless disagree with me because these sections are very well done and interesting. The book's scientific discussion of rattlesnakes is very interesting. These are amazing creatures and the author plainly is...

Excellent photography and information, imprtant contribution
I received a copy of this excellent book as a gift this past Christmas. Finally I was able to put it down and I wanted to support this book. The Photography is unbeleivable and the information is presented clearly and without the stuffy know it all attitude of many other authors. I get the sense he wants the reader to understand and appreciate the material without making it too complex. This is an excellent choice for beginning herpetologists. I have been to several of the locations mentioned in the text and the book reminded me of my own experiances with these magnificant animals. I would highly recommend this book to all those intersted in rattlesnakes.

Product Description

Illustrated with more than 250 dramatic original color photographs depicting not only fangs and rattles but also intricate patterns and extraordinary camouflage, Rattlesnake traces the evolution and behavior of the more than eighty living species and subspecies of rattlesnakes—from East Coast timber rattlesnakes to California's desert-dwelling sidewinders to South America's neotropical species. Explaining the functions of anatomical characteristics such as heat-sensitive facial pits, Manny Rubio also describes rattlesnakes' diverse habitats, feeding strategies, reproductive cycles, and seasonal hibernation patterns. Drawing on recent research and replete with never-before-published photographs, Rattlesnake is landmark guide for both professional and amateur herpetologists, as well as a fascinating introduction to the most maligned reptile of the Americas. Great book, great info, great photography
This book is a good resource for those who are interested in rattlers without being interested enough to read Klauber's treatise on the subject. The information is sound, and goes into fair depth, although at times I felt that a more scholarly less pop tone would have worked better. Still the author did what he set out to do; produce a great work on rattlesnakes that was accessible. It's easily worth reading, and is very informative. Although much of the info you can get from Klauber, there are many cases where Rubio has provided useful and worthwhile revisions/changes/additons to material (medicinal significance, the ecological effect of roundups, taxonomy etc.). These make the book more than a contemporary rehash of Kaluber's masterpiece. The text alone would be worth the price of the book; the photography makes the book a steal. This man knows how to take pictures; some of the best photos of rattlers I've ever seen (and I've seen and taken several) are here. I borrowed...

Lloyd Cole's Forgotten Classic
Rattlesnakes is a nearly perfect pop album. In the late 1980s, the time for singer/songwriters seemed past. But Rattlesnakes showed that lyrically creative material set to jaunty pop tunes still resonated. Whether it is a woman sharing with us the profound pick-up line "do you want to go to heaven, or would you rather not be saved?" or the ironic refrain of being "four flights up" and still feeling like "I'm underground", the lyrics transport us to places we often search out, and rarely hear memorialized in song. The Commotions provide a folk pop backing which is gentle and yet derived from the "rock" tradition much more than the soul or slick pop that would characterize some later Cole work. Cole's voice is expressive--alternatively exuberant, gentle or tinged with despair. With a dozen years' hindsight, we wish that Lloyd Cole's muse and the corporations for which he recorded had continued him down this path, and deflected...

Unlike anything else
When "Rattlesnakes" was first released in 1984, just about every music critic around called Lloyd Cole "The Next Bob Dylan." Sadly, Lloyd Cole couldn't match Dylan's longevity. Still, he flirts with perfection on "Rattlesnakes." The images are amazing: "She has cheekbones like geometry and eyes like sin," or the perfect simile: "She looks like Eva Marie-Saint in `On the Waterfront.'" Anyone who's seen that film knows how angelic a vision that was. Some of the songs show Cole's dark sense of fun, sort of like his friend/competitor, Morissey. Still, when the final strains of "Are You Ready to Be Heartbroken" fade slowly away, you can't help but remember every ex- you've ever had, and wonder why you were ever surprised that relationships end badly. Lloyd Cole showed some flashes of brilliance on his next two albums with the Commotions--especially on "Mainstream"--but he could never top...

The Quintessential 80's Album that Still Sounds Fresh
While current popular music is stylistically very far removed from the tree Lloyd was barking up with Rattlesnakes, it is by no means any further ahead. Having listened to Rattlesnakes about 8 billion times in the decade following its release and having formed a very large part of my expectations of adulthood around its lyrics, I was shocked to find during a recent week of listening that it has held up remarkably well. The album's timeless yet at the same time so firmly grounded in an era. Like almost every one of The Beatles' (yes, I'm aware of what I'm saying here) albums post-Help, Rattlesnakes could have only been recorded when it was and yet there is nothing dated about it. If I knew what it was that allows this to happen I would probably be able to describe it better but I can't. So I'll leave you with this: Rattlesnakes, from track to track, is probably one of the most coherent Albums I've ever heard. Each song is lyrically grounded and blends into the others to form...

Buy Rattlesnakes

Yes, I know the rattlesnake is not the nicest little creature but he demonstrates several different options available to a person in the search for personal self defense. Is a stun gun more advantageous than pepper spray or a gun. A stun gun is a “close quarters” weapon so that means you are getting into hand-to-hand combat before you can use it. You don’t want to give your attacker a shot when that person has a firm grip on you. Get away and find a position that allows you to shove the stun gun into your attacker’s body without letting your attacker grab you. When considering personal security, consider the rattlesnake. If you don’t get the message and freeze and allow the rattlesnake to get away, you’re going to get nipped. But if you do surprise Mr. Rattlesnake, what does he do. He coils up quickly and lets you know you are in deep trouble. Rattlesnakes have zero interest in wasting a perfectly good nip on a creature that can’t be turned into lunch or dinner. That’s like our rattlesnake biting you with dentures. One of my favorites for personal self defense is a stun gun. The charge won’t kill the attacker but it will stop them just like a stun gun. The key decision is to not buy one that is too low. There is nothing worse that really ticking off an attacker and running to the car only to find you have a bent key and can’t use it. There are other options and approaches available to you. Stun guns are available in different voltage choices. That’s why I like the stun gun.
