A "must" for all syptic system owners.
The basics of septic systems, from underground systems and failures to what the owner can do to promote and maintain a healthy system, is revealed in an excellent guide essential for any who reside on a septic system. Rural residents receive a primer on not only the basics; but how to conduct period inspections and what to do when things go wrong. History also figures into the fine coverage.

Essential for Owners or Prospective Owners of Septic Systems
This book is an essential tool for owners of homes with septic systems, or for people who are considering buying or building a home with a septic system. It is written in non-technical language and includes a plethora of illustrations, some of them humorous. It provides enough information so that reader can deal effectively with professionals, should that become necessary. While it mainly focuses on the traditional septic tank, it also describes many alternatives which can be used in situations where the standard tank may not be applicable. There is also an intriguing history of sanitation. I was fascinated to learn that the re were flush toilets in the Indus Valley (now Pakistan) in 2500 BC!Also included is an extensive bibiolography, including web sites, and a list of suppliers of various secptic-related products.

GREAT ADVICE & PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS
I live just 40 Kms outside a city of 3.5 million people but the 20 acre properties means that a sewered system would be cost prohibitive. So we have a septic tank system. When you get one of these, there are few if any instructions so you learn by trial and messy error. This is a great book for those new owners and users of these systems. It is a simple list of what to do and what to avoid.I would highly recommend it to all septic system owners and users.

Clear and Useful Information
My property was burned to the ground in The Station Fire (8/09 - Angeles Forest). My well just needed to be re-wired, so I didn't bother with the information on wells. The information on septic systems was very good. Since I am a picture person, I would have liked some diagrams, but I could figure out what was desribed. I believe it does a good job of describing septic systems for most of the country. My problem is the environmentalists in California have created new codes and regulations that make building, or rebuilding, impossible. I was informed that my soil "perk test" is too good! Since it drains so well it might be possible for effluent to get into the water table before it is completely safe. Might is the key word. I would like to rebuild a one bedroom, 500 sq ft cabin and Los Angeles County informed me I need a computerized system that will cost between $25,000 and $50,000 - the same type of system used in areas with poor drainage. Doggie Dooley = Clean Yard
I've been using this product for about 5 weeks and am completely satisfied. I had some concerns about the durability of the pyramid shaped model so I went with the galvanized steel model even though I only have 1 large breed dog. This model also came fully assembled and ready for the ground. The free scooper that was supposed to come with it was not included, so I was gyped there. The lid is hinged and opens easily but also will stay open for you which is great. I took some shortcuts on installation that have not affected operation. 1st, I started using a post hole digger but quickly went to the shovel. Don't buy the diggers just for this job-they are not essential. I also didn't dig the full 4 feet recommended. If you have good drainage, its not needed in my opinion. I dug deep enough to house the unit with an additional 8-12 inches of clearance and have experienced no problems. You'll want to install this near the end of your water hoses reach away from the house. It...

I WENT A BIT DEEPER BY 3-5 INCHES IN ORDER TO LINE THE BOTTOM WITH 2-3 INCHES OF ROUNDED BEACH STONE AS WAS TOLD IS DONE WITH REGULAR SEPTIC TANK INSTALLATIONS. I USED THE 'AS SEEN ON TV' AUGER FOR DIGGING AFTER GETTING 2 FEET IN USING A STANDARD SHOVEL. THE AUGER ATTACHES TO A STANDARD POWER DRILL AND IS ALSO SOLD AT CVS PHARMACY STORES ($19.99). IN ORDER TO REMOVE THE LOOSE DIRT AFTER GOING ABOUT 3FT. DOWN, YOU DEFINITELY NEED A POST DIGGER FOR 'LOOSE' DIRT REMOVAL. The Doggie Dooley 3000 has been installed for a couple of months now, and appears to work just fine. No odor, and no backups even though it is installed in GA clay. Two things you should know: (1) The lid is still plastic, although the rest of it is galvanized metal; and (2) Be sure to undersize the hole until you are 4 feet deep, then widen it out to 14"

If you own a septic system, you need this book
Where else does one find out about the care and feeding--literally--of a septic system? This book is humorously written by an author who clearly knows his, um, feces. Having just bought a house with a septic system, I am finally relieved to find a book that sheds light on the dark necessity of living in the country. This could become a conversation piece in our neighborhood.

Bathroom reading at its most instructive
We are currently living with a septic system, and I thought it was about time I learned something about them. This book is perfect for my needs: it is short, very informative, and even hilarious at times. My only prior knowledge of septic systems was acquired during childhood: our house in a rural village sat in the lowest point of our neighborhood (a swamp, actually) and everyone else's septic system used to drain down into our basement in the spring. I can't begin to tell you how happy we were when the village finally built a municipal sewage system. This book explains very clearly how to deal with emergencies, which is probably the first thing we country plumbing folks need to know.(I also discovered we're using a sink plunger on the toilet, and should go out and buy one with the circular thingy in the middle.)There are very clear instructions and diagrams on (1) how to build your own septic system; (2) how to find your septic tank if you...

Product Description

You can keep your "country plumbing" working day after day, year after year. Gerry Hartigan who has been installing and servicing septic tanks for twenty-five years, says "I'm still amazed to find out how little people actually know about their home sewage disposal systems. As Bismarck said, 'The less people know about politics and making sausages, the better they sleep at night.' Perhaps this is also true of septic tanks."
However, with increasing numbers of people moving to rural areas, it's more important than ever to understand more about what is generally referred to as "country plumbing." Top to learn more

Informative but dated
This book is informative as far as it goes and might be most useful for someone with an older system. But it was written in the early 1980s. A lot has changed since then. In particular, the book doesn't cover any of the newer systems that are used more and more nowadays in some parts of the country -- sand mounds, aeration systems, lagoons, etc.

BUY Country Plumbing: Living with a Septic System

Buy Septic System

Other reasons you may need an alternative system is if there are too many septic systems in one area or the system is too close to the water table or to surface waters.  The major components of a septic system are a collection pipe from the house, the holding tank, and the drainage system (usually a field).  It is not good for the septic system or for a municipal sewer system…just don’t do it.   It will also make selling your home difficult,  I personally have walked away from houses I wanted to buy because the septic system was not in proper working order.  Alternative septic systems use more technology to improve treatment processes.  The more solids that get added into the tank the faster the sludge will build up.  Garbage disposals and people using the toilet as a garbage can (condoms and tampons are the leading culprits) lead to a lot of sludge build up.  Avoid putting... Homeowners are responsible for maintaining their septic systems.  A lot of systems are built to be gravity powered, this is ideal because they are simpler (no pumps) and cheaper (no electricity).  This part of the system is identical for people connected to a municipal sewer except for where the pipe goes. Grease will eventually block your entire system if it is not kept in check.  Things that should be checked when inspecting your system are:.  An alternative system will be needed in this case. Spotting a problem early is a lot cheaper to repair than waiting until it is a catastrophic failure of the system.

com - A-Action Home Inspection Group is here to share with you an aerobic septic system inspection we performed during a home inspection in Fort Worth, Texas. We find from time to time that our clients are not sure if they want to spend the extra money to have the septic system evaluated by their home inspector. During this septic system inspection our inspector discovered several notable deficiencies that we be report back to our client. This is a very good example way you should have the septic system inspected by an experienced home inspector. As you will see during this video, the septic system is performing but is in need of some routine maintenance and repairs.
