Reality check for teens and parents of teens
To Save A Life is a terrific movie for teens and adults. It has a Christian theme, but is extremely relative and appropriate for any teen or parent. The movie is very gripping for most people to watch, and definitely one that will stay with you after it ends. It has loud music, partying, and subject matter that many parents wish were not so close to every home these days--cutting, depression, bullying, alcohol abuse, sex, pregnancy, drugs, suicide, divorce, and more.This is great for a family or groups to watch together. Great talking points to address with teens about the realities of life, consequences, and the fact that things can't always be "fixed" instantly or undone. Parents could rent this and watch it alone first, or just buy it. THIS IS ONE MOVIE PARENTS & TEENS HAVE GOT TO SEE!
This was one of my 15-year old daughter Elizabeth's favorite movies. (In fact, she often wore her To Save A Life promo shirt to school.) I read the book first, then saw the movie with Elizabeth (she had already seen the movie with our youth group the week before and it was the last movie we saw together as father and daughter; she died of unknown causes about a week later). To Save A Life is a powerful, gritty, true to life Christian film that deals with a lot of issues that plague our families and youth today: the cult of popularity, bullying, family troubles & divorce, depression, suicide, underage drinking, drugs, sex, teen pregnancy, and self abuse or cutting, etc. All this is seen through the eyes of Jake Taylor - high school senior, star athlete, popular man on campus, with a full-ride basketball scholarship to Louisville, and of course, the hottest girl in high school.After Jake's often ignored childhood friend Roger commits suicide in the hallway of their school,...

Non-Christian perspective
As the subject title implies, I come from a Jewish heritage, and now attend the local Unitarian Universalist church. I saw the movie with my husband and 13 yr. old granddaughter, and we all loved it. Out of respect for Rachael Britts, one of the authors, who I worked with at our local high school, I wanted to see the movie. I was half expecting a Christain solution to everything, but I found it very moving for all faiths tackling many controversial subjects. The subject of Christianity was only brought up a few times.As an open-minded individual who tries to respect all different types of people, I think this is a great movie for everyone. Watch for other books from the Britts dealing with other controversial issues!

One of the best films of the year
I still remember the night I went out with my family to watch this movie. If you haven't watched any meaningful movie this year, don't let this one go by, it is rich, honest and totally captivating. We need more movies like this in our theaters. The cast was great, the screewriting excellent and the message is powerful. As a Christian, I was touched beyond words and couldn't not help but cry when Kirk Cameron's character was complaining to his Dad next to the old cross and then without any word from his father he finally understood a message that changed his life and would change anyone's life. I love this movie and recommend it to everyone, doesn't matter if you're in a relationship or not. It is without a doubt my favorite pick of the whole year.

Fireproof -- Awesome
I watched this movie at the local theater TWICE last week and loved it both times. It evokes a variety of emotions including laughter, tears, tension. Many co-workers watched it also and we could not stop talking about it. The writing is superb! The actors and actresses are perfect for their parts (even the church members that have roles).Even if you are not married, this movie can still teach you about relationships. Just because you are single or have a good marriage does not mean you should not watch it.An excellent addition to any movie library. The Kendrick brothers just keep getting better!

A feel-good drama, Fireproof has a strong agenda: stay married, lead an honest life, and let your faith in a higher power help guide you. A still boyish-looking Kirk Cameron (Growing Pains) stars as Caleb Holt, a mercurial-tempered firefighter whose marriage is on the rocks. He clearly enjoys his status as a hero, but it comes at the expense of his marriage. His wife Catherine (Erin Bethea) is tired of the distance and wants him to make more of an effort at home, rather than surf porn on the Internet and hoard his earnings toward his dream fishing boat instead of helping out her disabled mother. Faced with impending divorce, Caleb's dad challenges him to follow the "40-day love dare," in which each task (cook her dinner, say nothing negative, etc.) is meant for him to better understand love and commitment and try and win his wife back. The third film by brothers Alex and Stephen Kendrick, Fireproof is the siblings' most polished feature. Cameron does a fine job of making Caleb real and believable, even when we're not always liking him. Though saddled at times with maudlin lines, Cameron adds emotion and range to his role. There is a not so subtle theme that the Holts--who at the beginning of the film are agnostic--needed religion to save their marriage. Clearly, Fireproof believes in its agenda and was made with the Christian audience in mind. Whether secular audiences will fall under its spell as well is debatable. Reading the reviews here and seeing the variety of reactions to Fireproof is almost as interesting as the movie itself.Most of the positive reviews focus on the message. Most of the negative reviews focus on the technical quality of the movie, and/or the reviewers' feelings about Christianity. Accordingly, I'd like to chime in on these three topics.Technical Quality: Although I did like the movie, I have to admit the negative reviewers have a point here. The cinematography and special effects are more in line with what you'd expect on a TV show than a feature film. There's nothing glaringly awful, but the viewer is definitely aware this film was not financed like a big-budget Hollywood movie.The acting performances are about the same. Cameron puts in a solid professional job, but nothing that's going to go down in history as one of the great performances of all time. This movie addresses racial prejudice, pain of unresolved grief, the effects of hate and unforgiveness and its impact on the person plus all those who come in contact with him. Well acted. A Christian film about grace and forgiveness, The Grace Card tackles prejudice, loss, and grief. The death of a child 17 years ago filled Mac's heart with anger and bigotry and crippled his relationship with his wife and youngest son. In his job as a policeman, he's paired up with Sam, a black officer who's also a part-time preacher and whom Mac dislikes intensely. Sam has also just received the promotion Mac thinks he deserved himself. The difficult partnership affects each man and his family in very different and significant ways. Sam struggles with the conflict between his desire as a minister to love and accept everyone, and his intense feelings of anger and even hate toward his fellow officer. That struggle almost turns him away from his calling as a preacher. A crisis on the job threatens to decimate what's left of Mac's family and brings the conflict between Mac and Sam to a climax. Just when the situation looks like it might destroy both men, a few well-chosen words and a seeming coincidence reveal that God has made Sam's and Mac's paths cross for a reason. What's more, their interaction with one another causes both men to experience a personal and spiritual growth that neither could have anticipated. A very moving and powerful witness!
I just saw the movie a week ago. It was so moving that it caused me to reflect on my relationship with Jesus. The Bonus materials were equally as good as the movie. I've been a big follower of the Sherwood Baptist Church movies: Flywheel, Facing the Giants, and Fireproof (which are without question anointed by the Holy Spirit), and this one has moved right up to the top with them! I continue to pray that all of these movies increase in support and that we see other inspiring Christian movies take root! I just praise God for using such folks at Sherwood and the ones behind this movie. All of these movies are life-changing because they are based on the Word of God! A true must see, along with the other 3 movies I've mentioned!

great movie
For those of us who long to see lives of faith portrayed with the grittiness and courage that this life entails and demands, here is the movie we've been waiting for. I found the story immensely moving - all the more so for it being true - and the acting, especially that of Frank Rautenbach, particularly good. Worth the money for sure.

Loved it!
I loved this story! I'm from South Africa and it was very true to form. I loved the miracles that God did throughout the movie - and knowing it's based on a true story makes it even more awesome.I will say they use a little Afrikaans every now and then, which may make it hard for the non-Afrikaans speaking people to pick up everything they're saying, but my husband watched it and said it didn't detract at all.I would highly recommed this movie for anyone wanting to watch God's power in doubtful circumstances.

The growing genre of Christian cinema adds to its flock Faith Like Potatoes, based on the book of the same name about a real-life South African farmer named Angus Buchan. Buchan accepted Jesus at a moment of crisis and began experiencing miracles, ranging from sudden rain putting out a wildfire to reviving a woman struck by lightning. The movie follows Buchan (played by Frank Rautenbach, star of a South African soap opera) from his failed farm in Zambia to his rise as a lay evangelist, delivering a sermon in a massive South African stadium. He begins as a sullen, short-tempered man, quick to lash out at his wife (the lovely Jeanne Wilhelm) and the native Zulu workers on his struggling farm. But as his life takes on the purpose of spreading the Word, Buchan finds personal peace (though he also faces personal tragedies). Faith Like Potatoes is squarely aimed at Christian viewers; its straightforward take on Christianity is unlikely to persuade skeptics. Despite the intriguing and (for an American audience) exotic locale, the problems Buchan faces (overwork, an emotionally remote marriage) feel bland and generic. Though Buchan clearly disapproves of a snide British farmer's colonialist contempt for the Zulus, the movie's own attitude towards them is paternalistic at best.
