IMPORTERS BEWARE! These BluRays are 50hz!!!
if you're in the USA and thinking about importing these, you'd BETTER be sure that your either both your TV and Blu-Ray player can cope with 50hz Blu-Ray discs, or that your player is capable of converting them to the US standard of 60hz, because these discs are AUTHORED AT 50hz for the British market! Some US importers found out the hard way (with titles such as Planet Earth, Being Human and Doctor Who: Series 5) that 50hz discs are NOT universally compatible with US equipment. In short, if you have an incompatible player (such as the Playstation 3, amongst others) and/or TV (such as all Panasonic and Samsung models, but perhaps more), you'll have wasted your money. If you're not 100% sure you can play these, you'd best wait for the eventual US set.Amazon should really do a better job about educating people about these incompatibilities rather than just happily taking their cash (I'm fully compatible with 1080/50, by the way).

Product Description

John Barrowman (Doctor Who, Desperate Housewives) and Eve Myles (Doctor Who, Little Dorrit) are joined by stars Mekhi Phifer (ER, Lie to Me) and Bill Pullman (While You Were Sleeping, Independence Day) for a new heart-pounding season of Torchwood. When convicted child killer Oswald Danes (Pullman) miraculously survives his own execution, the footage holds America transfixed. And then everyone realizes that nobody is dying. All across the world, nobody dies. And then the next day, and the next, and the next. People keep aging -- they get hurt and sick -- but they never die. The result: a population boom, overnight. With all the extra people, resources are finite. It's said that in four month's time, the human race will cease to be viable. But this can't be a natural event - someone's got to be behind it. It's a race against time as CIA agent Rex Matheson (Phifer) investigates a secret British institution named Torchwood that seems to hold the answers, and finds only two surviving members: Gwen Cooper (Myles), who has retreated to a remote Welsh hideaway with her new family, and the mysterious, brilliant Captain Jack Harkness (Barrowman). But soon they all find themselves in the same fight against the greatest threat humanity has ever known... humanity itself. Top to learn more

Torchwood: Miracle Day opens with a fantastic premise: one day, everyone on earth stops dying. A murderous pedophile being executed survives; a CIA agent who gets punctured with rebar survives; victims of heart attacks and strokes and disease survive. The world population begins to skyrocket and the only clue is a word that flashed across the CIA's computers for only a moment: Torchwood--which all fans of BBC science fiction know is a British agency dedicated to investigating impossible and alien events. In short order, Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) returns from his self-imposed exile and Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) comes out of retirement to discover what's behind this instant immortality. Reluctantly merged with Jack and Gwen are two members of the CIA: an aggressive field agent who should be dead (Mekhi Phifer, 8 Mile) and an analyst who's never done field work at all (Alexa Havins). And how will that pedophile (Bill Pullman, Independence Day) fit into everything as he gradually becomes a cult figure and a media sensation? Unfortunately, the 10-episode series soon gets bogged down in conflicting impulses. Half of the show wants to be a thoughtful examination of how humanity would grapple with such a transformation, while the other half wants to be a thrill ride as Torchwood peels back layers of conspiracy. These halves seem like they ought to mesh, but they undercut each other; what would be a compelling revelation for one of these threads seems lackluster for the purposes of the other. What makes Miracle Day still worth watching are the human moments: a wonderful backstory romance for Jack and an encounter between the pedophile and an escort have an emotional payoff that's far more significant than the conspiracy, which grows increasingly forced. And Gwen Cooper remains a delightful character, grounded in the prosaic world while wrestling with the mysterious unknown; she's the perfect audience surrogate. The basic pleasures of Torchwood are muddled in Miracle Day, but what succeeds will still be essential to the show's fans. --Bret Fetzer Top to learn more

Redefining Life And Death In A Totalitarian State--A Torchwood Reboot Hits American Soil

"That is so Welsh. I show you something fantastic - and you find fault."
Some SPOILERS here.TORCHWOOD, a spinoff of DOCTOR WHO, is yet another television show with nifty science-fiction and paranormal elements, and it IS a marvelous and fun show. The premise: the Torchwood Institute is a covert organization given the responsibility of being Great Britain's watchdog against all things malicious and extraterrestrial. This series revolves around the amazing exploits of Torchwood Three, a branch of the Torchwood Institute which operates out of Cardiff, Wales. In the debut episode "Everything Changes," Policewoman Constable Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) witnesses a deceased stab victim's temporary return to life. This becomes her introduction to a hidden world of frightening monsters, incomprehensible alien technologies, and extreme paranoia. She meets the very charming Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), a man displaced in time and leader of Torchwood Three. Oh, and he can't die. He obligingly places Gwen in the loop: "We don't just catch...

C.S.I. with Aliens and Sex and Alien-sex
Torchwood is the most-times dark, sometimes gory, adult tie-in to the new Doctor Who series, but that hardly matters as it is the most unique TV you'll ever see. ..Dr. Who producer & two-time Hugo-nominated writer Russell T. Davies created the series as an opportunity to do more than just family fare, part CSI, part X-files and the remaining part is out there on its own. In Dr. Who there have been hidden references to the "secret" organization TORCHWOOD (the name which is an anagram of DOCTOR WHO) since season one (an answer given by the ANNE DROID in BAD WOLF episode 12 ), then appearing more physically throughout season two, even featuring the origin of the organization created by Queen Victorian herself to defend the Earth from alien threats, including The Doctor. The series takes place over a hundred years later as Jack says on the promos, "In the 21st century, everything changes." Captain Jack Harkness (played BRILLIANTLY by the dashing John Barrowman, best known to Americans...

Separate from the government, outside the police, beyond the United Nations, Torchwood sets its own rules. Led by the enigmatic, ever watchful Captain Jack Harkness, the Torchwood team delves into the unknown and fights the impossible. Everyone who works for Torchwood is young. Some say that’s because it’s a new science. Others say it’s because they die young. Top to learn more

More than a spin-off of the Russell T. Davies incarnation of Doctor Who, the BBC series Torchwood is a wholly enjoyable blend of drama, science-fiction thrills, and mature subject matter that never fails to deliver its main purpose: to entertain on a weekly basis. John Barrowman, who captured the imagination of Who fans during the Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant eras as 51st-century adventurer Capt. Jack Harkness, returns as the dashing, immortal time traveler; here, he's the head of Torchwood, a covert organization that investigates extraterrestrial and supernatural events on Earth without the help of the British government or United Nations. Eve Myles is a police constable who joins the team after discovering them in the middle of bringing a stabbing victim back to life (in the debut episode, "Everything Changes"), and she brings a decidedly human touch to the Torchwood team's tech-driven investigations. Among the mysteries encountered over the course of the 13-episode series: an alien gas that absorbs humans during sex ("Day One"); a half-human, half-Cyberman female with a connection to Torchwood support man Ianto Jones (Gareth David-Lloyd) in "Cyberwoman"; a rash of cannibalistic murders ("Countrycide"); a very different kind of fairies than the ones of legend ("Small Worlds"); and most impressively of all, a skyscraper-sized demon that threatens to plunge the Torchwood team--and the world itself--into chaos ("End of Days," which features an off-screen cameo by a certain Time Lord). What separates Torchwood from the most modern television science fiction (save, say,

Heroes and Battlestar Galactica) is the frankly adult tone of the series: The violence is plentiful and occasionally graphic, and there are frequent bedroom couplings between the team members and supporting players. There's also a maturity to the relationships that exceeds the usual scope of sci-fi, most notably in the affecting "Captain Jack Harkness," which sends him back to the London Blitz, where he meets and falls in love with a handsome American pilot who happens to share his name. Their love affair, like the majority of Torchwood's "grown-up" storylines, is handled with taste and real emotion. Extras on the First Series are remarkably plentiful; six of the seven discs include entirely new behind-the-scenes featurettes that explore the main characters and their major story arcs, location shooting, the impressive SUV that the team drives, and the show's extensive special effects and alien creations. Barrowman also contributes a very funny "Captain's Log," which invites viewers to join him on one of the final shooting days of the series. The entire seventh disc is given over to Torchwood Declassified, the 13-part program which explored each episode on BBC Three and the BBC's Torchwood website. Commentaries are offered for all 13 episodes, with Davies, Barrowman, Myles, Burn Gorman (who plays Torchwood's medical officer, Owen Harper), David-Lloyd, producers Richard Stokes and Julie Gardner, and various episode writers, directors, and producers all lending their voices. A small battery of deleted scenes and outtakes, as well as previews for DVD releases of other BBC programs, including Doctor Who and MI-5, round out this impressive set. --Paul Gaita

Torchwood Rocks!
I never got into the X-Files, but I love Torchwood! It's smart, funny, and a little bit naughty. The science fiction parts are always interesting, sometimes scary and usually pretty cool. All the characters are well developed, well written and well acted. The show is anything but predictable. Many times, the show goes in an unexpected direction and really keeps you on your toes. Russell T Davies is a genius. I've even started watching Doctor Who for some of the background to Torchwood. Can't wait until Torchwood - Season 2 comes out in September!

Aliens In Our Midst--A BBC Series That Gets Progressively Darker And More Affecting

So, it was with some amount of excitement that I followed Barrowman to his own show expecting some variation of the "Dr. Who" narrative. But no, the show is stylized in a very different way. The "Torchwood" spin-off plays like a high octane and oftentimes quite amusing cousin to "X-files." There is a fair amount of sexual content, of all varieties, within the new series that might frighten some of the purists--but, as a whole, the show exceeds as adult escapism at every level. Set ostensibly in contemporary Cardiff, Torchwood is a covert governmental agency designed to investigate and control unexplainable phenomenon. With a state of...

Torchwood - The 'adult' Doctor Who
My copy just arrived, and the presentation of the set is nicely done. The disc case is done up like a bound book. The 'pages' inside include full color screen shots on the sleeves, generally from an episode present on that particular disc, but not always so. Each sleeve holds a disk as well as a list of the episodes or content on the disc and which writer or cast member is doing the audio commentary. The BBC did a really nice job on this set. The first series has commentary on every episode, but there are none on the second series episodes, so I was a little disappointed. The Torchwood Declassified insider peeks and interviews are available for both series 1 and 2 however, as well as outtakes and deleted scenes. The commentary and Declassifieds add snippets of backstory that were lost in the deleted scenes.Torchwood is a spin-off series of the legendary Doctor Who, focusing instead on the adventures of a former companion of the Doctor, a time traveler from the future,...

Excellent Read & Prelude!
Got this through the Kindle app for iPad and blew through it in just a couple days -- couldn't put it down! Great read, intereting storyline, but best of all, the insight into the "in-between" that I'd been wanting. (Basically, what were Gwen and Rhys up to between seasons 3 and 4.) No Jack in it, but it didn't bother me. Gwen/Rhys/Anwen is more than enough. I won't kill the story for those looking, but definitely go for it. Excellent character insight and development. Hoping for more like it!

TORCHWOOD FIRST BORN- I loved it!!!!
I am a big Torchwood fan and with First Born I was utterly addicted to the plot. If you are a big fan of Gwyen and Rhys then this is the book for you. This story takes places after season three. I as a parent loved to read how our Gwyen and Rhys are now so tired by their bundle of joy. And there was still a great story that kept me hooked. This is the first book that I have ever read within 24 hours. I am not a speed reader so this is a record for me. I highly recommend this book to any Torchwood fan.

Gwen and Rhys are on the run. Rhys was hoping this meant a windswept cottage on a cliff top, but he's had to settle for a miserable caravan in the isolated village of Rawbone. With the locals taking an unhealthy interest in their daughter, Gwen and Rhys start to realize that something is very wrong - something with echoes of a life they thought they'd left behind. As they uncover the village's terrible past, Gwen discovers that Torchwood will never leave them behind, and now she and Rhys stand alone in defense of the Earth. And the children of Rawbone can only bring her closer to the secret forces that want her out of the way. Based on the hit series created by Russell T Davies, First Born is a prequel to Torchwood: Miracle Day, starring John Barrowman and Eve Myles as Jack Harkness and Gwen Cooper, with Kai Owen as Rhys Williams. Not real Torchwood :(
Those days have gone, along with Owen, Tosh, Ianto and Jack (except he does come back) : It is a pretty good story, although it is not hard to guess what is going to happen later in the book as you get used to the style of the writer.
