This book is where the term 'Utopia' comes from
This book has been on my reading list for a while, and I finally grabbed a copy to read when I got my Kindle. Thomas More, as well as many other famous men, put to writing a vision of the ideal society. As with most visions of the ideal society, he had some good ideas that were eventually put in place, but he also had many impractical ideas that won't work just due to the nature of man. It was also interesting to see that he came from an era that accepted several social mores such as slavery that today we find unacceptable and were deemed good institutions in his ideal society.I think my favorite part was the method the Utopians used to minimize the importance of gold, fine apparel, and money. Gold and jewelry were considered baubles only interesting to children. They marked their slaves by bedecking them with gold. He related a story of a foreign ambassador coming to visit the Utopians. They mistook the gold bedecked ambassador as the slave and the plainly clothed...

Utopia is acclaimed all by itself
The work begins with written correspondence between Thomas More and several people he had met on the continent: Peter Giles, town clerk of Antwerp, and Jerome Busleiden, counselor to Charles V. More chose these letters, which are communications between actual people, to further the plausibility of his fictional land. In the same spirit, these letters also include a specimen of the Utopian alphabet and its poetry. It is a great book that allows one to think about human nature. Utopia itself is an imaginary place that is nonexistent. Many have wondered over the years why More even wrote it. I forces one to consider that if the government of a place allows circumstances to occur that remove mans ability to take care of basic needs on a just and right way, should they be punished when they achieve it by breaking their laws?

Comparing editions
The Yale edition (Miller's translation - $6.95) gives a bare list of events in More's life, but the short introduction mostly focuses on the syntax and rhetoric of the book; there's very little in it about the social and historical background. It omits the commendatory letters from various humanists, but includes both the opening letter to Giles from More, and the postscript letter to Giles from the 1517 edition (but not the Busleyden letter about Utopia as a real place that prompted it). (It also has the 1518 woodcut map of Utopia.) The sidenotes that Miller thinks are not mere section markers are placed in the footnotes. The Hackett edition (Wooton's translation - also $6.95) has a pointed persuasively argued introduction focusing on the translator's own interpretation of the work; he relates it to More's life and the paradoxical double vision of Christian piety and ordinary social life also found in More's friend Erasmus's "The Sileni of Alicbiades," which is included...

Tied & True - These Really Work
You can go out and buy htose plastic cable ties at the local hardware store and walk around with a pair of wire cutters to cut and replace one of those plastic things every time you need to adjust a bundle - or you can simply use one of these handy Velcro ties. The 100 pack is great as the ties come in 4 spools of 25 ties wound together so they are easy to store and place wherever you may need to grab them. The professional look of these ties is matched by their strength and flexibility.

Great, Cheap Way To Alleviate the Wire Rat Nests
As cable ties go, these are absolutely great. They're more versatile than the semi-permanent plastic cable zip ties and relatively inexpensive verses the overpriced Belkin Velcro cable ties. There are three things you should be aware of about this product, however. First, despite the brightly colored packaging, these cable ties, as the description notes, are all black. That's not a bad thing, but know that this isn't the multi-colored package.Second, the way these ties work is that they come in several rolls. To get a new tie, you basically tear one off the roll (like you would a sheet of toilet paper), poke out material left in the little hole on one end, then thread the tie through that hole. These don't come as 100 individual ties you can just grab from the bag, there's a very small amount of work involved in their use.Third, the price is a bit deceptive with the current seller. Check the padded shipping charges to know the true cost...

Great product but not the same quality as the 5-pack
First let me say that these velcro cable wraps are great for their intended purpose, especially if you will not be adjusting them very often after you have secured your cables. I had purchased the from Office Depot for about $4 a few years ago to tame my microphone and guitar cables and I love them. When I found these straps (100 pack) for under $10 I jumped at the opportunity to buy them, but was a bit disappointed when compared to the 5-pack, as these are considerably thinner and have much smaller "hooks" and "loops" so they do not stay as secure as the former straps (-1 star). Also, since I use them for gigs I am constantly adjusting them and so far two have ripped at the through-hole (-1 more star) which has yet to happen with my 3+ year old straps. If you are looking for a convenient way of...

She instructs her employees in what they do (mutual coordination), but outside changing conditions, new technologies, ever-changing prices, new rivals, new laws and regulations, knock-on effects and events, all appear as concatenate coordinations,... I reproduce Thomas Friedman’s review of David Rothkopf’s book(follow the link) because the ‘debate’ on the future of capitalism is based on a fallacy – namely that complex social systems are ‘fixed’ by designer’s of ‘better’ systems, either of a... However, the nearest I have expressed a view on major social change, was to state, as a student in the late 1960s, that "all attempts to change the world, have made it worse". Outside the firm it is concatenate coordination in the market, but inside it is mutual coordination at her command. garage kids made the IT revolution (IBM merely made very large machines while Apple overtook 'Big Blue'), and so on. Think Small and make a difference. Nobody will design where it leads to or what will replace it. All attempts to develop a "Grand Design" will fail.

) Sex education would be about sex, not puberty, and focus on the reason most people have most of their sex: pleasure. Sex positivity is not the belief that all people everywhere should have as much dirty dirty sex as possible. It's about everyone being able to make the sexual choices that are right for them, free of stigma: having the knowledge and the social freedom to do so. It's about being positive about all sexual choices and the biological bases we make those... For a start, in a Sex-Positive Utopia, the Period Planner app on my phone wouldn't say "love connection". Back when I first started reading feminist bloggage, there was a question I used to see pretty often: the Feminist Utopia Question. Having done away with the assumption that absolutely everyone is either male or female and everyone is straight, there is no fucking point in having Girls' Toilets and Boys' Toilets. Would there be pornography in your feminist utopia. It's about actively seeking to remove both shame and privilege from particular kinds of sexual activity - or a lack of sexual activity. And, of course, celebrating the joy of dirty dirty sex. Depending on the survey, somewhere between 5 and 15% of people report having experienced same-sex attraction now. With the loss of its taboo, sex would actually become less important on a social level. Removing the stigma from non-heterosexual sex is hardly going to push that number down. That wouldn't mean the loss of magnificent figurative language around sex: rather the opposite. With no stigma around sex, there'd be no need for euphemism.

Though DirecTV and Cablevision have executed significant targeted-TV ad programs, an attempt to create a national targeting sales platform collapsed this year when Canoe Ventures laid off most of its staff and announced that it would focus on... The obvious counter argument from the targeting crowd is that addressable ads can go much deeper than that, pulling in third-party data to deliver hyper-relevant ads based on actual purchase history -- ensuring that the cat owner gets the cat-food... In laying out the challenges for advanced TV advertising -- which include technology, measurement, buy-in-from advertisers and agencies -- Deloitte reports that the current market could occupy less than 1% of all ad budgets and remains largely... A $60 billion market, TV remains the largest single area of ad spending, more than twice as big as the faster-growing online-ad business. "Targeting by program and slot, complemented by traditional awareness and response metrics, and by online buzz tracking, all create quite a high bar for any new targeting to overcome. One of the most interesting documents charting this checkered history comes from Deloitte in its "The Future of TV Advertising" report. Perhaps most interestingly, Deloitte reports that not everyone in the TV business is clamoring for targeting. So it's a safe bet that all the auto ads dominating commercial pods I see nightly aren't safe bets at all. For Chris Faw, senior VP at Time Warner Cable , one of Canoe's backers,  this is a case of focusing on what programmers wanted, a way to make sure they're monetizing the very expensive content people are watching on-demand and taking advantage of... By any ROI calculation, it's a waste -- one you'd think would be avoidable in our age of big data, hyper-targeting and ultra-accountable marketing.
