From days of long ago, from uncharted regions of the universe, comes a legend. The legend of Voltron: Defender of the Universe! A mighty robot, loved by good, feared by evil. A force of space explorers, Kieth, Lance, Hunk, Pidge, and Sven are sent to find the last princess of planet Arus, Allura, and the keys to Voltron. Together they find the five robot lions that make up the legendary robot. King Zarkon, an evil warlord, rains down destruction across the universe. But our heroes form Voltron at the last moment, and begin a new war against his cruel empire. Top to learn more

Like Robotech, Voltron is an anomaly: an anime series that never aired in Japan in this form. The program Americans know under that title is comprised of recut footage from Hyakujuo Go-Lion ("Hundred-Beast King Go-Lion") and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV ("Armored Fleet Dairugger XV"). Voltron debuted in syndication in the US in September, 1984, with a completely new storyline. Five young pilots from the Galaxy Alliance, Keith, Lance, Sven, Hunk, and Pidge, crash on the planet Arus when they're attacked by the minions of the evil King Zarkon. In the ruins of an ancient castle, they learn the secret of recreating Voltron, the ancient robot "loved by the good and hated by the evil." Each of them must pilot one of five lion-mecha that link to form Voltron. They also befriend Princess Allura, who pilots of one of the lions after Sven is wounded in battle. Together, they fight Zarkon's robots and "ro-beasts," the witch Haggar and Zarkon's son Lotor. Obviously pieced together like a jigsaw puzzle, Voltron reuses some footage over and over, but leaves out big chunks of the narrative. When the five pilots initially crash on Arus, they stand at the edge of vast desert; after the commercial break, they're wandering through a fog-shrouded forest. These problems won't phase Gen-X'ers who grew up with Voltron and want to revisit this relic of their childhoods. The extras include a rather stilted documentary on the restoration of the series. Product Description

The evil Prince Lotor of Planet Doom has come to destroy Planet Arus and take Princess Allura to be his slave. The Voltron Force, Keith, Lance, Pidge and Hunk pilot the Black, Red, Green and Yellow Lions to defend the peacful planet. With Princess Allura in the Blue Lion, they form Voltron and destroy Lotor's robeasts. Frusturated, Lotor targets Planet Pollux, and Allura's cousin Romelle. Can Voltron defend two entire planets at once? And what will happen to the Voltron Force after a poisoned blade leads to Princess Allura's funeral? Top to learn more

Like Robotech, Voltron is a cut-and-paste combination of unrelated series created for American TV. Part of the early wave of "Japanimation" that helped to build an audience for anime in the U.S., Voltron also contributed to the fad for transforming robot toys. The episodes inCollection Three, the "Green Lion" set, originally aired in October and November of 1984. Four young stalwarts from the Galaxy Alliance, Keith, Lance, Hunk, and Pidge, pilot the lion-mecha that link to form the giant robot Voltron; Princess Allura of the planet Arus took over the fifth lion after Sven was wounded in battle. After being missing in action for some time, Sven (who talks like Wally Walrus) reappears in episode 41, but stays on planet Pollux with Princess Romelle as an ally of the Voltron Force. In each episode, Lotor, the son of King Zarkon, and the evil witch Haggar concoct a new scheme to destroy Voltron and seize control of Arus--only to be defeated by Voltron between the last commercial and the closing theme song. Comprised of re-edited footage from Hyakujuo Go-Lion ("Hundred-Beast King Go-Lion") and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV ("Armored Fleet Dairugger XV"), the episodes have obviously been assembled like mosaics, with extensive dialogue covering the gaps in the visuals. Like Robotech, Voltron has a special place in the hearts of adults who watched it as kids. For younger otaku, it's an example of how far Japanese animation has developed in the intervening years--and how much more sophisticated its audience has become. "Fly on, mighty warrior; your destiny calls!"
The final set of Lion Voltron episodes consists entirely of the additional programs produced in a partnership between World Events Productions and Toei Animation after the original GoLion-based shows ran out. Therefore, although the stories are mostly excellent, the picture quality falls far short of the high standard set by the previous DVD volumes. The visuals are often a bit fuzzy and dark, except for the inserted scenes from earlier shows, which are always sharp and bright. The backgrounds are grainy and the characters are not shaded or highlighted. Some colors are nearly black (see the supposedly "Blue" Cat), while others are too pale (like Princess Allura's formerly hot pink spacesuit). Nevertheless, the series remains highly entertaining, and even features a brand new villain by the name of Merla. The 3-DVD Black Lion Collection consists of thirteen episodes, including exciting adventures like these:"Take a Robot to Lunch": A brilliant scientist...

Not As Good As The Others....
I love Voltron. Don't let the review title fool you. When I was a kid growing up in the 80s, Voltron was one of my favourite shows along with Real Ghostbusters, Filmation's Ghostbusters, Silverhawks, and Thundercats. The episodes in this final set were made when the show was so popular and everyone wanted more episodes. The studio had run out of episodes of the Japanese shows that they made Voltron from so they went to the people that had made the shows originally and hired them to make original Voltron episodes. Being made a bit after the other shows, these episodes aren't exactly as cool as the ones in the first four sets, but they're still Voltron. DEFINATELY better than the new show of Voltron that just came out. Don't even bother with the new series if you're a fan of the original.

Better than the last release, honest review of the product itself
I don't think the other reviews of this product are very fair. The picture and sound quality on this release is definetly superior to the previous release which was by the way was just a limited edition that WEP released themselves.Media Blasters gave this feature the same respect they gave the rest of the Voltron series from Lion force to Vehicle force. Before you go unfairly bashing this product, remember how crappy the first DVD release was. (The sound was the main issue)If you as a collector or a casual fan want a really great copy of this special on DVD, this version is the one to get.Stay away from the previous release at all costs.

The year was 1986 Reagan was in office the Mets were dominating baseball and I with the help of my Mom got to play hooky from school to watch this Voltron team-up movie if I had known 25 years ago that I would find it on DVD I would have done things different but oh well anyways this movie is a fanboys dream both Voltrons fighting the combined forces of Viceroy Throkk and King Zarkon who also in the tradition of villan team-ups secretly plot treachery against each other this flim is both action packed, poignant (The Keith/Allura scenes) and funny I highly recommend adding it to your DVD collection Voltron fans

Recommended to any fan of the 80's Voltron cartoon. Brings back some great memories. Also, this was one of the better fight scenes between both Voltron's and the robeast.

His upper torso is a ball joint, his waist is a swivel, his hips are ball joints, his thighs have swivels, his knees are hinged, his ankles are hinged, and the balls of his feet are ball joints. His shoulders are swivel/hinges and also have up-and-down hinges built into the torso so he can raise his arms straight up. His biceps swivel, his elbows are hinged, his forearms swivel, and his hands are ball joints. And while Matchbox did release a 6″ “Popy” version of Voltron himself, most of the other versions have been 12″ or larger and made from multiple lions that combine together to make one large figure. Design & Sculpt: Most of the Voltron toys from the 1980s were actually Japanese toys imported by Matchbox, and they featured a lot of diecast and chrome parts.  They’re well designed and not too heavy, allowing for plenty of good poses, but I do have one complaint: the regular sword’s guard is too close to the handle to allow Voltron to hold the blade parallel to his forearm. Instead of going the chrome-and-diecast route, this Voltron is made entirely of plastic and features a softer, more cartoon-inspired look. Accessories: Voltron comes with his mid-formation Blazing Sword, and the sword in its normal form. I don’t know who did the sculpting – pretty sure it was in-house – but they’ve done a good job here, depicting a great version of the cartoon Voltron.

I get involved in the fight because the spider is damaging the castle, things were going pretty well for me but then, the spider traps and devours me.   While all of this is going on, Daniel can see it through his haggarium infected condition,... Ironically I learned that word from a very much obvious disappointed Voltron fan at the Official Voltron page in Facebook. Daniel gets Black Lion without confessing his haggarium infection, he bumps over Lance and Hunk who are obviously more qualified than him to lead the Voltron Force. Well, the Voltron Force decides to go to Doom because Daniel told them what was going on and Vince covered up the haggarium infected part.   Don’t they have much more experience and seniority to lead the Voltron Force.    Voltron ends up winning.   It makes no sense to me. The stupid proposal of Allura to Keith was laughable, it lacked emotion sort of like pushed into something logical like a math equation: 1 + 1 = King of Arus. Anyway, while I’m dismissing that asshole, spider Kala-Wade appears to get revenge on Maahox for transforming her into a spider. The sad story begins like this:  I’m fighting with Maahox and I dismiss him because I obviously don’t need him anymore:  my castle is completely restored, I fully control the haggarium, I could move the earth at my will.   The thing is that he uses his infection to actually fight against the Lotor-Wade-Kala spider and Keith lets him lead on the fight.   I appear again in the haggarium chamber just to watch as  the suddenly transformed into an octopus-Maahox  merges with Castle Doom transforming it into a Robeast.   After that happens he squashes me like a bug with one of his tentacles and destroys Planet Doom when he leaves with the Castle.   The thing is that I end up merging with the spider while Maahox is thrilled watching everything go down.   So Daniel never tells he is infected with haggarium.
