Wal-Mart Culture
Wal-Mart, one of the world's largest economies (it accounts for an astounding 2% of the U.S. gross domestic product, and in any given week, 100 million people--half the adult population in the U.S.--shop at Wal-Mart!), has taken it on the chin in recent years. John Dicker's _United States of Wal-Mart_, Bill Quinn's _How Wal-Mart Is Destroying America and the World_, and the recent film "Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price," are all examples of this trend. Each of them documents Wal-Mart's low wages and benefits, its take-no-prisoners competitiveness that slashes-and-burns local business and guts local main streets, and its willingess to buy sweat-shop goods. In his _Wal-Mart Effect_, Fishman doesn't deny the pernicious practices of Wal-Mart. But the more interesting feature of his book is his analysis of the culture that Wal-Mart has created in the United States. In a word, Wal-Mart has trained the American consumer to expect and to demand low prices, and to...

Like or hate the place, Walmart affects us all.....but do you know how much?
After seeing a rather frightening documentary about the worst of Walmart's business practices, I decided to have a look at his book. I'm glad I did because I learned quite a few things that weren't exactly public information...in fact, they might actually be company secrets. Mostly, though, I got a glimpse into the ways Wal-Mart affects our economy, for good and ill, with their relentless search for low prices (which consumers seem to love, not realizing how this could weaken our economy), to the bully tactics used to force suppliers to offer the "lowest price", even in the wake of higher costs for raw materials and other factors that make price cuts near impossible, below a certain level. The result? Wal-mart often buys from manufacturers who produce products overseas (they can often produce products for prices cheaper than American companies), lessening the benefit to the American companies and actually forcing many longtime name brands out of...

Wal-Mart isn’t just the world’s biggest company, it is probably the world’s most written-about. But no book until this one has managed to penetrate its wall of silence or go beyond the usual polemics to analyze its actual effects on its customers, workers, and suppliers. Drawing on unprecedented interviews with former Wal-Mart executives and a wealth of staggering data (e.g., Americans spend $36 million an hour at Wal-Mart stores, and in 2004 its growth alone was bigger than the total revenue of 469 of the Fortune 500), The Wal-Mart Effect is an intimate look at a business that is dramatically reshaping our lives. holding a card is not as important as using the card number <=]
I *highly* recommend the electronic versions of the Amazon gift cards as well as the ones you can print on your own. I have never had a problem with either of these methods, nor have any of my card recipients. Although it is theoretically better etiquette to give a physical card, I've found that because Amazon is an online vendor and the cardholder is going to visit the web to use the card number, recipients enjoy the convenience of having the card information delivered to their inboxes--especially when it's on the day of a special event. If you use the printed versions, you can easily mail or hand deliver your gift with your personalization applied. In short, make your life easier by sending joy to your loved ones through the technological magic of your computer--they truly will appreciate the sentiment behind your gift regardless of the delivery method.

Tons of –

  • New Photos!
  • Bad Decisions!
  • WTF Moments!

Plus –

  • Fan Stories!
  • Celebrities!
  • Goats!

As Americans, we hold these truths to be self-evident: We will shop. And when we do, especially at our favorite supercenter, we will wear and do the most bizarre things possible.

From the wildly popular website PeopleofWalmart.com, this photo collection of Americans in their natural shopping habitat (70 percent of which is brand new and never before included on the website) presents people of all shapes and sizes wearing and doing everything imaginable in full view of their fellow shopping public. Plus, for the first time brand-new fan-submitted stories offer the most random experiences you can imagine!

So welcome to a world where no shoes and no shirt are no obstacles, where parking lots are filled with dead deer, Bengal tigers, and old men in thongs riding bikes. Once you meet the People of Walmart, you are sure to fall in love.

Pretty good but not every photo is classic PoWM material.
I enjoy People of Walmart, but just like on the site, some of the featured photos are not that funny. The book had many "classics" (like the back boobs photos, obnoxious t-shirts, scary hair, makeup and clothes, and Willy the Pimp) but some of the others were sort of meh. I assume that perhaps there were some rights issues with some of the photos (getting permission to publish) but I really don't know. And some of the stories were not that outstanding either. (The story about the Subway employee reporting on the weird sandwich a customer ordered every day was my favorite.) I'd say that for me, perhaps 75% of the content was PoWM at its best. The thing is, I suspect that everyone who gets this book will have a different idea of *what* 75% (or whatever percentage they designate) is classic PoWM. So because of that, I'd say that for most fans of PoWM, this book has *enough* of the good stuff to make it worth buying, but don't expect that every photo is a...

The Chicken Report is Hilarious!
WALMART INSIDE OUT by Ron Loveless is a true insider's story of the world's largest retailer. Love it or hate it, the Walmart's of the world are here to stay and have changed the face of retailing. Since the author knew "Mr. Sam" (Sam Walton, Walmart's founder) since childhood, and worked for him starting out at the literal bottom of the ladder as a stockboy, he is uniquely positioned to tell the story unlike any other authors who've written about Walmart. The author opens with a hysterical telling of how he was tapped to present the LEIR report to visiting New York stock analysts -- a snooty bunch. Since they had pegged the Walmart folks as something akin to hillbillies, they played it up. Loveless presented a report, complete with Power Point charts and graphs, about the roadkill counts of chickens on Arkansas roads, and how the company used this data to predict future sales. I won't give the whole story away, but for those of us who've sat through countless boring...

A fascinating story told by the fly on the wall
Wow... what a great read! When we think of "Walmart" we usually think of the world's largest retailer or for that matter, the world's largest company period. We forget that just a few decades ago, it was a single "five-and-dime" that employed a mere handful of average folks - unsure of what they wanted to be when they grew up. Ron Loveless bares-all in this tale of a small town street urchin who walked country roads looking for fresh road kill to supplement his mother's welfare rations and ended up a senior executive in a company that changed the world. I read the first few pages and could not put this book down.

Product Description

When you're the largest and most successful company in the world, you've got a big "target" on your back. Critics hate it. Shoppers love it. Is Walmart the evil empire or low-price savior? There's never been a book as uniquely positioned to answer that question. Until now. Author Ron Loveless was there from the start. Actually, before the start. Born to a welfare-supported family in Hiwassee, Arkansas (population 98), Ron and Walmart are inextricably joined at the hip. His mother cleaned house for the man everyone called "Mr. Sam" long before the first Walmart opened its doors. Chronicling Ron's rise from stock boy to senior vice president (or in Ron's words, from "outhouse to penthouse"), Walmart Inside Out gives readers a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the corporate giant from a uniquely-balanced perspective. By turns enlightening, entertaining and endearing, Walmart Inside Out is written in an amiable, down-home style that feels like you're sitting on the author's porch, sharing stories and a cool drink on a gentle Arkansas night. Tell Your Friends To Watch This Movie!
A powerful documentary that contrasts the public persona of Walmart with the human toll of their behind-the-scenes business practices. Deeply personal vignettes from small business owners, Walmart managers, workers, attorneys and environmentalists review the tragic consequences of one of the world's largest, most venal corporations running amok on rural America - subsidized by our own tax dollars. This is a movie was Walmart does NOT want you to see - so tell all your friends!

Good information but boringly presented, needed more 'Snap'.
'Wal Mart, The High Cost Of Low Price' is filled with first hand testimonials and some hard-fact figures that will help in validating your hatred of this greedy giant, and visually exposes those in other countries who are ruthlessly used as slaves to produce the cheap products you purchase when you patronize this monolith. These "jobs" provided to the labor forces of India, China, Bangladesh, and Mexico are not 'good wage' jobs even for third world standards. The people are overworked, underpaid, and forced to work in sub-human conditions. These human beings make 13 to 17 cents and hour, and work 10 to 18 hour days without breaks, all so you can have that $1.49 blouse. Exposed in this film are the squalid, rent controlled apartments in China, provided by the company, that put to shame the most rancid ghetto house in your hometown. And if the employee chooses not to live in these rat-infested housing developments, the rent is still deducted from their...

This Should Not be Discounted
Right from the start, you get the impression of a family's impending doom. They have run a successful business for a generation and have been members of their community for several more. The juggernaut Walmart is about to move into the area. The viewer wonders, but knows what will befall the family business. As the producer points out, this has occurred all over America where Walmart has set up shop, demanded more services from the county treasury, and ran local stores into bankruptcy, destroying main streets everywhere. If the Wallmart is not profitable, it will be shut down. It will leave a vacant building and parking lot and a shuttered main street like the parasite that has sucked the life out of its host. Robert Greenwald also focuses on the Walmart employees who are forced to work long hours sans overtime, health care, or union protection. On this last one, in particular, Walmart fights tooth and nail with a rapid response force of lawyers that will...
