A surprisingly good improvement on the first game
When Sega's Yakuza for the PS2 finally came stateside a while back, it offered up a decently entertaining brawler at best that just didn't do too much to seperate itself from the rest of the pack. Yakuza 2 thankfully, and surprisingly, improves on much of what the first game offered in terms of gameplay, graphics, and story; and is a pretty satisfying brawler that will keep you entertained for some time. Playing once again as Kazuma, you traverse through a nicely detailed Japan, and are still looking to put an end to your days with the mob. The game looks solid for a late-in-life PS2 game, offering up some nicely detailed characters and environments, while gameplay-wise the moments of brawling are easy enough to pick up and get into, and other elements bear more in common with the gameplay of the classic Shenmue. There's a lot of secrets and extras to find and uncover as well, and as a whole, Yakuza 2 will keep you busy for a while at the very least. The game's story is also...

Brutal fun still available on the PS2
Yakuza 2 is a fantastic game, and it's really a shame it has taken so long for Sega to bring this to the US. The story follows ex-yakuza Kazuma Kiryu as he tries to prevent an all-out clan war between his old clan, the Tojo and their rivals, The Omi. Throw in a bit of Korean mafia and you've got yourself a thrilling asian gangster story. To make things even better, the combat (of which you'll be doing a lot) is incredibly brutal and satisfying. This is really the meat of the game, although you'll have lots of sidequests and minigames (golf, arcade games, hostess club, etc) to partake in if you feel up to it. The world itself where the game is set is based upon real locations, such as Tokyo and Osaka and it looks and feels great. The areas are very populated with people carrying out their own tasks and having their own conversations. The environmental detail seems only hampered by the power of the hardware. Over all, I'd say this is a definite...

Great gem of a game
This game is in essence one of the greatest gems of Sega. It's one of those games that you never hear about, but once you play it, you're happy that you gave it a chance. A direct sequel to Yakuza, this follows the story of Kazuma Kiryu once again as he takes on Korean mafia members. Although this is an amazing brawler with tons of fun extras and gameplay, this is NOT your typical beat'em up. Yakuza 2 has a very deep story with tons of intricate relationships between a multitude of characters. Some characters are reappearing from the first game (Majima, Haruka, Date, etc.) and there are alot of newer characters as well. Pros: 1) The gameplay is definitely revamped and the fighting system is alot smoother than before. No longer do you have to deal with clunky battle mechanics and you can truly enjoy the fights. Plus there are newer finisher and grappling moves with even more weapons at your disposal (but my favorite is still around: the...

Finally 'Shenmue' Reincarnated
Back in 2000, there was a little unknown gem on Sega Dreamcast called 'Shenmue', which became a huge financial flop despite the universal critical praises. Its sequel only showed up in Japan and later ported to the original X-Box after Dreamcast's demise. Shenmue was the game that invented QTE (Quick Time Event) that are so frequently used by many games like Resident Evil 4, Heavy Rain and God of War series. Yakuza 3 is the third installment of the popular Japanese action adventure game series by Sega that inherit all the characteristics of Shenmue series. But it is this installment that finally exceeds everything Shenmue tried to be in spades with so much more contents and depths. Yakuza series was understandably not well-known outside Japan at all due to its quirky and idiosyncratic eccentricity stemming from distictively Japanese culture. Make no mistake, this is one of the most popular game in Japan. With population half as big as the U.S. but so much...

Yakuza 3 is the next cinematic chapter in the prestigious video game saga offering an authentic, gritty and often violent story set in modern day Japan. Following the events of the previous game, Kazuma and Haruka (his adopted daughter) have left Kamurochoto to seek a new life in Okinawa where they manage an orphanage for children. However, their peaceful life is soon interrupted when a series of events unfold pulling Kazuma back into the shadowy past he thought he had left behind. Making its first appearance exclusively on the PlayStation 3 platform, the rich story and vibrant world of Yakuza 3 lets players engage in intense brutal clashes within the streets of Okinawa, and the pulsating and often dangerous city of Tokyo where only the strongest will survive. Released in the US, but with many caveats to consider...
I feel very torn in writing this review, as the release of Yakuza 3 in the US is the big carrot we must chase to get Yakuza 4 (which comes out in Japan a mere week after this release in the US) released stateside. SEGA, I need you guys to pay attention. There's obviously been some miscommunication and misunderstanding in how this all should work. Ryu Ga Gotoku 3, the original Japanese title, is a fine and stellar game. It has a fantastic story, excellent mini games, substories and submissions to follow, and does what I feel is serve as an excellent representation of life in Japan, more to the point of life as a Japanese gangster. The seedy underbelly and the familiar touches to anyone who has been to either Okinawa or Kabuki-cho in Shibuya are going to see massively detailed recreations at work here. There was clearly a lot of love poured into the Japanese release. The US release, Yakuza 3, seems to have been the victim of time and poor...

GOTY?
After some thought I pre-ordered on impulse knowing this game would have too low of a supply for a clearance price drop but boy was I wrong about doubting this game. Best impulse pre-order ever. This game brought me back to the Dreamcast days. Think Shenmue/Virtua Fighter. The Yakuza 3 demo does not do this game justice. Remember Jackie Chan for the Playstation? This game brought back memories of many Martial Artists. If you have any interest in Martial Arts BUY THIS GAME NOW. Adventure/Arcade style beat 'em up with RPG elements. Fast action with extremely fun mini games along the way. Yakuza 3 is so entertaining it does not need an online mode for a crutch. Coming from an online only fan this is a pretty good side step to step forward. It's just plain fun with a good story to boot. Haven't played Yakuza 1 or 2? Don't worry this game has you covered. There are Yakuza 1 and 2 cinematics to get you caught up on the story. Also like to add:...

Time to bring on the next gen
Yakuza is a good game with some very fun elements, but suffers from camera and loading time issues. In the game you are wandering around the Japanese entertainment district and getting into random fights. The only major problem with the overworld is the constant loading time. After 5-10 steps the camera switches to a different spot as you move down a street and loads up. Another few steps, more loading. Some street punk challenges you to a fight? 20-30+ seconds of loading time. The fight control system is a bit cumbersome - you will often land the first punch of a series and then finish your combo by wildly swinging at the air. The camera is an issue since it mostly stays in place or shifts slightly while you are moving, rather than get behind you. You get used to the combat system quickly and some of the new abilities you can gain (like the ability to kick in any direction at the end of a combo) are designed to counter the flaws in the system. The real shining star in...

Japan's Seedy Underworld Hits the PS2
I really enjoyed playing Yakuza. The designers have taken a typical Japanese entertainment district and transported into the game, complete with convenience stores, hostess bars, strip clubs, pawn shops, etc - right down to the drinks machines on every street corner. They've also taken the criminal world of the Yakuza, stereotypes and all, and transported it into the game. Maybe it's because I live in Japan, but I got a real kick out of playing the "bad but honorable" main character in such familiar surroundings. The only real flaw is the camera control -- the camera gets flaky every once in a while. The player should have full camera control and the auto control could have used more polish. Also, the game earns it's M rating mostly due to language and sexual content and parents should exercise caution when considering buying it for children.

Gets me in a personal soft spot, but objectively pretty good too.
I will concur with some of the other reviewers that say that this game is not quite what it could be. The gameplay is somewhat repetitive, but in a way that most brawler type gameplay is. It's a fun repetitive. It also has a nice modern-RPG feel to it, with the inclusion of certain aspects like buying food in restaurants or convenience stores to recover health, experience points, items, and the way money tends to work in the game. It's very cut-scene heavy at times, but the story and voice acting are surprisingly good, considering how bad both of those aspects have gotten to be in most recent games. What I want to praise this game on the most is the detail and nuance with which it recreates its aesthetic setting. This was done absolutely superbly -- possibly the best representation of a real-world locale I have ever seen in a game. To compare, it is not as massively-accessible as the Grand Theft Auto games (San Andreas most of all), not as block-for-block tightly...

Yakuza 4 Back in Action
I had the game yesterday and punched in about 5 hours and will update as I play along. The Yakuza series brings back familiar faces along with new ones.. A Loan Shark,a crooked cop and a ex-con.. Everything almost looks the same but that does not mean it's a bad thing..New areas such as rooftops and underground malls have been added along with new store fronts and hostess bars..Pachenko Slots have been added with a mix of a couple of new games..The arcade shooter is back from part 3 in the sega arcade..The battle system is fun, granted I only been using the loan shark as that is who you start off with.. His dashing kicks and move sets are really refreshing for the series.. As you progress through the amazing storyline you will cross paths with other characters you will play later which I always found an awesome concept..The soundtrack is great barnone.. The city to me now feels more live then it ever was before. If you are in to beat em ups like streets of rage with that element of...

A very fresh take on RPG/Action/Adventure game for a newcomer to the series
I have never played Yakuza series from Sega before and I heard raving reviews and accolades about the series and the 4th installment of the game seems to be awesome so far. Having played about 5 hours, I am already hooked. Before starting the series, I reminisced what happened in Yakuza 1-3 and know the basic storyline so far. As the other reviewers stated, the game is a mix of beat em up, RPG, action and adventure. The cut scenes are top notch although they can get a little bit on the long side. However, the graphics are a beauty and blew me away overall. Everything feels top notch as the movements, environment all seem so real and makes you feel like you are in Tokyo. There are so many things to do that it makes you worry something has been missed or you forgot to talk to someone. Talking to people (they have green or blue arrows on top of their heads) or even eavesdropping on people is a charming task and it gives you an insight as to what's currently going on. (I've...

Leaps and Bounds above 3
i really think sega out did themselves with this sequel. almost every aspect from 3 has been improved and expanded upon. City, NPCs, characters, voices presentation wise have been improved significantly. weather effects like rain have been added. day and night cycle. combat feels and plays alot smoother, but yes sometimes its hard to lock on but its a minor problem. the story and pacing are alot better and flows very well. playing as 4 characters back to back makes the game feel less like a grind or repetitive. each character has a unique personality and back story. i cared what happened to each character. even the Kiryu (main character of the whole series) has been improved with more insight on his back story and even more fighting techniques and attacks. one of the weak parts of 3 in my opinion of the redundant sub stories. there are less sub stories in 4 but they feel significant and not redundant. for note the game is 99% true to its original Japanese content. the only cut content...

Good game to have, but not at full price.
Recommending Wreckess poses a dilemma. There are so many things about the game that are good, most specifically those things surrounding the graphics. Wreckless contains a beautiful and detailed Hong Kong cityscape and is chock full of special effects. After a mission you can watch a replay that is stunningly realistic. The game is also easy to pick up and lots of fun to play.So what's the problem? Unfortunately, this is not a game that will grip you for hours. After the pretty graphics and the novelty of smashing everything in sight wear off, you find the gameplay has little substance. Drive around, smash stuff, drive around some more, etc. Don't get me wrong, the game can be great fun, but only as something you pick up every once in a while when you want a quick and fast-paced game. Don't hesitate to buy Wreckless up if you can get it at a discount. Otherwise, you might want to try a rental first. One last thing that should be mentioned. This game is based in Hong-Kong, so...

Buy Yakuza 2

So, let’s dive into the sequel and one of the better late-coming PS2 games from 2008, Yakuza 2. Yakuza 2 definitely takes control of the PS2’s power, since the game looks amazing. So, let’s clean off your brass knuckles, whip out Rosetta Stone Japanese, and read on about Yakuza 2. Hello everyone, and welcome to part 2 of Cam’s Eye View’s Yakuza Retrospective. There are some more mini-games, like a first person fighting game that is fun, but most of the game is the same as the last one, but with some minor changes. The mini-games range from the crane games, slot machines, the first person fighting game, Mahjong, Shogi, batting cages, golf, and many others. However, it does fall flat on some areas that are kind of surprising to me. While I didn’t mind the length of the last game, for some reason I don’t like how long this game is. In my opinion, it is kind of boring. So, as you all know, I liked the first game, yeah, it had its faults and demanded commitment, but it was a great game. There are multiple missions to do, like help a guy get a specific doll from those crane games, catching a freeloader, and picking off Yakuza people.

Picking up more or less where the first part left off, we Yakuza 2 shows old ghosts closets not having yet finished with their past. Just like the animated series Bartender, bartenders will inform you of Yakuza 2 on alcohol purchased. In short, Yakuza 2 is a kind of copy / paste of the older, add-on luxury seeks above all to establish his characters to better integrate them into a vast mythology mafia should also be the heyday of the PS3. On this point, Yakuza 2 is a credit to his grandfather without demonstrate a blatant originality. In addition, knowing that you progress, you will get the EXP to boost your technical level of your HP or your use of Fury mode, you will understand that the more you progress, the fighting will be more interesting, especially in Normal The Easy... A billboard, a traffic cone, a trash can, everything will be good for the paste to fuck rival yakuza. Very similar to those of Yakuza, the bastons have the deserves to be energetic and enjoy a variety of special moves. In addition, you can try to discover the full set of keys hidden around to retrieve additional objects. Yes, the real yakuza are still fighting all alone against a gaggle of types, three-piece suits, ready to insults such as chopping knives.

Things are a bit tank controlish, Kazuma doesn’t instantly turn around with a simple control stick movement, he has to turn around and ends up suffering cheap attacks as a result. Ten billion yen has disappeared from them and Kazuma wants to find out why, only to find out that Nishiki has become power hungry, Yumi has disappeared and his old Oyabun has been shot. Things take a strange turn as he finds a little girl named Haruka on the street, who turns out to be a part of Yumi’s bloodline and at the very center of the missing money that is turning the underworld inside out. There’s also money you can collect from gambling and from beating up thugs and Yakuza, needed for buying various items. As a result, the game gets the tone right very early on, a story about a man who ruined his life for another and became forced to fight the people he once sided with for the life of an innocent. Our story begins with Kazuma, a gangster for the Dojima family of the Tojo clan, going about his business of beating up people for money with his partner Shinji and hanging out with his good friends Nishiki and Yumi. The villains are also pretty strong (if a tad generic at times), centered around Nishiki’s huge change in personality from the game’s start to the meat of the plot. Kazuma fights thugs with his fists and whatever he can find, all while collecting experience that he can use to learn new moves and grow certain stats. After a few lessons from the martial arts master, Kazuma will be able to wield swords correctly with more speed and power, dash around for quick dodges and even attack enemies behind him. Kazuma works great as a hero character due to his surprising amount of integrity that gets established early on and built up by his close relationship with his calmer Oyabun.

Gameplay As with previous releases in the Yakuza game franchise, Yakuza 4 is a localized version of the original Japanese action-adventure release. Additional features include: four playable characters, character specific finishing moves, movie quality storylines and nearly all the content released in the original Japanese version, including in-game dating functionality.
