Why I bought a Garmin Nuvi 2595LMT
Why I bought a Garmin Nuvi 2595LMT.I have owned many voice command systems in my car from both Magellan and Garmin. I use my gps in my car and in my truck when pulling my 5th wheel. I had a Magellan Maestro 4050 with voice command since 2008 and decided to look around for a new one with a few more bells and whistles. I spent a week solid reading reviews and was ready to buy a Nuvi 3490LMT but kept on reading about software issues and after trying on at BestBuy didn't see it worth $400 for a few additional features. With that in mind I looked back to Magellan Roadmaster 1700 and a 4700 and even the 5175 Traveller and just couldn't find one that had the features I wanted. So back to Garmin I looked and found out that The Nuvi 2595LMT had everything I like and needed and was $150 less than the NUVI 3490LMT.What I liked in the Nuvi 2595LMT5" screenVoice CommandsSpeaks street names, turn by turnOne button to save and name a...

A valuable upgrade from Garmin
Most of the reviews here are for the 2595, not the 2555 that I purchased. I didn't need voice activation or bluetooth so the 2555 is just fine for me.I have to disagree with the reviewer that says it is slow to find where you are. I am a long-time Garmin user and I think it is light years faster than my old Nuvi model. Although some of the new features are a little difficult to get used to I still think this unit deserves the highest marks. The larger screen alone makes it worth an upgrade from an older unit. It's also great to have lifetime maps and traffic upgrades. Again, that gives this model high marks. My favorite feature on the 2555 is the categorization of places you would like to go. For example, on my old unit I used to have search for and then type in "REST A" to find the next rest area on my route. With the 2555 "Rest Area" is a category and therefore only a couple of button presses away.In summary, I am a happy consumer who is...

My 3rd Garmin - New Features and how they worked
This is my 3rd Garmin GPS. I have become accustomed to their user interface and performance, so I can't compare to other makes. I wanted to talk about the new features that attracted me to this unit and how I evaluated their usefulness on my first 3 hour road trip to a location I know by heart.Feature 1 - 5 inch screen. I am older and am having to use reading glasses to see the GPS mounted to the dash. My earlier unit was a 4 inch. I considered a 7 inch Magellan, but when I found out you couldn't install custom POIs on the Magellan, it ruled that one out for me. We go camping frequently and I have all the state parks as custom POIs. I also have truck stops I like to use. The 5 inch display was definately an improvement for me.Feature 2 - Automated voice recognition. I definately don't like being distracted by touching the screen to see how far the next roadside rest is (see custom POIs above). So I thought telling the GPS what I wanted made a lot of sense. When...

Accurate and easy to use.
I bought this at the expo for the Marine Corps Marathon and have used it a few times since. The official debut release is at the NY ING Marathon in November. It is easy to set what you want your three or four lines to display (I recommend three so the middle one is larger). Lot of options for what you want displayed (Pace, Time, Average Pace, Distance, HR, etc.). I started it when I crossed the starting line and ended it as soon as I crossed the finish line, and it said 26.54 miles (.34 miles off over 26.2 miles is amazing accuracy, plus I probably ran that much getting around people). User interface is easier than some other GPS watches I've looked at. Features are comparable or better than the Garmin one at this price point, the software used is 'training peaks' which you can look through before you purchase the watch. Training Peaks does have a 'premium' feature that lets you plan future workouts but the free version of the application is adequate.I also bought the...

My 1st Run Trainer GPS Watch
As a owner of my first training watch, it has been easy to configure and use. I purchased the watch Dec 2011.I still like these features. The auto-Split (Lap) calculator (either distance or time); I am using distance, where every mile ran my Split/Lap time recorded and displayed. Keeping track in real-time heart rate and pace are invaluable features during a run. I have compared the Timex Heart Monitor to a high dollar treadmill, during a 1:10:00 run, the readings were within 3 BPM when comparing the two sensors. TrainingPeaks web application provides sensor data analysis.Update: Jan 2nd 2012, After contacting TrainingPeaks support team with a question regarding their web site, they stated I was not using the Timex Free upgraded web version; they updated my account. If your TrainingPeaks account does not state Timex Ironman on the web page header, you are not subscribing to the Timex upgraded free version, which provides several additional options over the...

Take a Run on the Outside
This watch is absolutely awesome! The setup and functionality of the watch is simple and user friendly. However, if you find yourself having difficulty I recommend viewing the TimexUSA videos uploaded on YouTube. The videos are straight forward and very descriptive. The GPS function of the watch has been 100 percent accurate when compared to my vehicle's odometer readings, and the Sports Tracker app on my Android phone. Highly recommend for runners of all levels.

Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
*** UPDATE at the bottom of this review (February 2012)***Background - I own a lot of technology. I like electronic toys and I indulge myself in whatever the latest gadget is. This has given me a broad taste in different segments of gadgets, and a pretty good eye for what works and what does not work. Some convergence works but to date, most just plain suck (January 2011). Prime example of poor convergence is my iPhone 4 and Apple App Store GPS software like Navigon, Garmin, TomTom, MotionX, iGO, GlobalNav, MapQuest, Google and others. I tried them all - and in one way or another, they all suck. Why? Because the iPhone is primarily a mobile phone and an iPod. When an SMS message comes in, or a Facebook alert, or a Calendar alert, or a phone call, it either distracts or switches away from GPS navigation. Not a good idea when driving, far less when driving in unfamiliar areas!!!Convergence in GPS mapping systems is completely understandable. Magellan,...

Great Screen - Great Fratures - Some Quirks
Having been a Garmin owner for about 5 years I had no doubt what brand I was going to buy, my old Garmin served me well but it was time for a new one and the wide screen was a key feature I wanted in my new one.The screen is impressive, while going from 4.3" to 5" does not sound like much it is really amazing how much more map and information that fits well on the screen. The screen itself is anti-glare that works, and very bright if you want it, I have the brightness at 60% and that is fine even in bright sunlight. The images are very crisp and clear, street names and such are auto-sized to not obstruct the map but big enough to read easily. The volume when it is reading out direction is also outstanding, so loud I have it also on 60%. So a solid 5 Stars on the screen and voice volume, as well as the pronunciation of the street names!Quirk: When I first got it I was in my office and opened it, plugged it in to just power and fired it up, it kept asking for me...

Garmin's nuvi 1450LMT is Outstanding
Researching GPS devices was and is worse than buying a car with all the different product offerings and features plus none of the model numbering seems to make sense which was even more frustrating. You can't tell a low end unit from a high end unit. Garmin is no different either.Through all of that I am very pleased that I settled on the Garmin 1450. IMO Garmin has made a wonderful device. The UI is very intuitive and very easy to operate even with my big hands. The touch screen is very accurate and responsive. From power up to satelite acquisiiton takes seconds. The turn by turn instructions are very clear but a bit too chatty. We have found the street name pronunciations fairly entertaining. The points of interest have been pretty accurate as has the gas station mapping and the hospitals and such. The bread and butter of a GPS is really whether it can get you where you need to go especially if you as the operator have no idea. I have travelled outside my area of...

"An amazingly rich exposition..."
"I was driving back from New England last weekend, and using GPS to confirm the route I'd plotted. While I knew the basic trick was using satellites to triangulate, I started to wonder exactly how the damned thing synched with maps, etc. Then I got an email from Amazon advertising your book, and viola!HERE WE ARE told me exactly what I wanted to know. I downloaded HERE WE ARE on my IPad, and found it a terrific, most informative read. The embedded links provided a great deal of value added. All in all, HERE WE ARE is a wonderful example of how to use new media effectively.I counted 49 embedded links in your GPS book, and spot-checked more than 20. Most lead to Wickipedia articles (which are very good in and of themselves), but there also are at least two excellent YouTube films. One is a fascinating interview with the fathers of GPS, the other an equally fascinating Air Force report on how GPS is maintained at Schriever AFB. This film also explains how GPS is...

Who knew?
On a dark desert night in Iraq in 2003 a paratrooper pulled out his military GPS and showed me everything about where we were, from altitude to longitude to latitude, a feat a soldier of any previous era would have been astounded to see. I was flabbergasted, knowing nothing of GPS.Now comes Mr. Carrier's book, which turns what could be dull, technical reporting into storytelling. This is no surprise to anyone who has previously read Mr. Carrier. He polished his considerable gifts while working at The Denver Post as the Rocky Mountain Ranger, one of the newspaper's most popular writers ever.To quote Pete Dexter, "A book that entertains without enlightening can still be a guilty pleasure, but a book that enlightens without entertaining is algebra."This is no math book.

A Fascinating and Fun History of One of Today's Most Important Technologies
This book takes a complex system -- modern global positioning satellites -- and in a fast-paced and fun read explains how the idea originated, the various ways it was developed, and the unique applications we take for granted in our everyday lives. Beginning with the first realization that Doppler shift from Sputnik could be used to locate yourself on Earth, Carrier details the men and ideas that led to today's $100 hand-held GPS receivers, turning an expensive military system into one of the most useful civilian products of all time. Carrier makes the complexity simple for laymen to understand, and focuses on the people and politics that made the development of GPS such an exciting journey. A great read.

Product Description

Here, from New York Times and National Geographic contributor Jim Carrier, is the fascinating, little-known story of the discovery, development, and future of GPS, the greatest advance in navigation ever fielded and a mighty electronic glue binding the modern world together. “I believe that 50 years from now historians will place GPS on the short list of inventions, alongside the clock, electricity, and the Internet, that are truly indispensable,” he writes. “We can’t imagine living without it. In fact, without GPS, civilization as we have come to expect it would sink into chaos.” Top to learn more

Works Just as Advertised for Me
***** Update, 24-12-2011 *****We just came back from a thousand mile (each way) road trip. As I had anticipated, the GPS unit and the dashboard mount had not moved at all from their location for the duration of the trip. This mount keeps performing as advertised, at least for my particular setup.***** Original Review *****Over the years I have become somewhat addicted to my GPS navigator. I like to use it even when I am completely familiar with the roads that I am traveling as it provides me with the driving information that can be very useful (such as the real-time driving conditions and traffic). However, keeping a GPS attached to your windshield is a thief-magnet, and yet taking it off the windshield all the time is a bit of a hassle. The dashboard mount is intended to deal with those issues. I've just got this Amazon Basics dashboard mount, and so far it has worked for me just as advertised. After reading the earlier reviews, I was a...

Works with GDB 50 (MSN Direct Reciever) too!
Somewhere along the way, all the bits and pieces fell off the end of my GDB 50 (the soon-to-be-JUST-a-charger MSN Direct Receiver that came with my Garmin Nüvi 780) and disappeared to wherever things such as this and matching socks go. Like other reviews have stated, there aren't any instructions, but really none are needed. Reassembled the charger in less than 2 minutes. This kit worked great, and for a heck of a lot less than a new power adapter would have cost!

What’s your navigation tool of choice these days: standalone GPS or GPS-savvy smartphone. And think about it: your phone is almost always with you, so it doesn’t matter if you’re in your car, your spouse’s car, a friend’s car, or a rental — you’ve got GPS. Then there’s the matter of power: GPS apps put considerable strain on your smartphone’s battery, so if you’re driving somewhere that’s more than an hour or two away, make sure you have a car charger. And let’s not forget: when your phone is strapped to your dashboard for GPS duty, it’s harder to use as, well, a phone. Plus, because many GPS apps tap Google for search, you’ve got the largest and most up-to-date POI database known to man. Maybe it’s because I “grew up” using a standalone GPS, but when I need help finding my destination, that’s what I reach for — even though I know my Navigon-equipped iPhone is the better navigator. (Many folks swear by MotionX GPS Drive , which costs all of 99 cents, but I continue to be partial to Navigon USA.

With so many GPS units on the market today, it might be easy to not notice the Navman MY60T GPS. Trending in the area of intelligent electronics, the Navman MY60T GPS is making headway in this area. Contemporary features like the spoken directional guidance feature is something you might want to consider on your next GPS. Navman MY60T is an excellent GPS product that may satisfy everyone who gets it. The only drawback is that it has some difficulty choosing alternate routes. MY Drive is a feature that is on this GPS that learns your particular driving habits that you do everyday. The first thing you need to consider is why you need a GPS and what you will use it for. As you may have guessed, other units have this same technological know-how built into their GPS units. Instead of simply buying the product that you want, you may become confused and upset as you compare the many products available looking for the one that suits you best.
