This is a deceptively amazing book!.... get this book; it's important!
The header I wrote calls this a "deceptively amazing book".For pages, there are lots of details about the level of effort it took to find out how each country built their version of the bomb. Country by country. The Soviet Union. France. Israel. South Africa. And all the frustrating suspicions about who was doing it and who MAYBE was doing it.[Did you know that one of our airplanes was so close to a Soviet nuclear blast that the paint was scorched? The author, Jeffrey Richelson, reports that.]There are some treasures early on... about my hero, Moe Berg, the Yankee baseball player and spy! Then there are some quibbles about RB-57's; he doesn't distinguish between the "D" model and the "F" model. But that's a quibble.AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN.... IT ALL COMES TOGETHER. All that background detail about how the South Africans and the Indians successfully concealed their programs... all the ambiguities. On page 460... and...

Good but not Great
What a frustrating book. First the good news, it is a marvelous history and worth the read. Richelson is the master in collecting data. He did it before on his books on the CIA and NSA and he does it again here.However, much like his previous books, Richelson lacks the ability to pull the pieces into a coherent whole. (I'd like to generously attribute that to the author having too much classified knowledge.) And without the context (that is surely somewhere in his notes) the general reader is unable to do it for him.In the 544 pages of the book there wasn't a single coherent description of the components of a weapons complex. It would have been helpful to start with the U.S. Manhattan Project and describe and diagram what were the key facilities necessary for a Plutonium weapon. How were these facilities different for a U-235 weapon? Why do we and other countries choose both? Why use electromagnetic separation versus thermal, etc. Then a description...

Authoritative, Urgent, a Nuclear Briefing Book for Obama and You

Definitive and Well Written
This is a finely detailed yet easy to read book. It is essentially a tracing of the history of nuclear weapons in various countries and seems to have a lot of information that will be news to most readers. The Nuclear Express is well-organized and should be a very handy on the shelves of any modern historian, as its reference value is high. On most topics the authors are authoritative and thorough. Their solutions for trying to prevent further use of nuclear weapons on US soil are not as radical as it might seem given the alternatives. I would assume that MAD is still on the table in response to an attack, but there is not much information on current US capabilities in that area although it would seem a given that they are still formidable.The authors point out dangers from the Middle East but do not seem to know enough yet about that area, aside from Israel, to really point out nuanced solutions and be appreciative of the complexity of that part of the world. It is an account of where those weapons came from, how the technology surprisingly and covertly spread, and who is likely to acquire those weapons next and most importantly why.
The authors’ examination of post Cold War national and geopolitical issues regarding nuclear proliferation and the effects of Chinese sponsorship of the Pakistani program is eye opening. The reckless “nuclear weapons programs for sale” exporting of technology by Pakistan is truly chilling, as is the on-again off-again North Korean nuclear weapons program.
An interesting and scary book
This book is a strange blend of technical and historical fact and political cautionary tale. These mixed motives are carried off with varying degrees of success.As it was written by two insiders in the nuclear establishment, you'd expect it to excel in technical detail, and so it does. The entire history of nuclear weapons, from the moment that it was realised that a nuclear chain reaction was possible to the present day, is covered very thoroughly and comprehensibly, along with good explanatory appendixes. The technical information is pitched at the perfect level for intelligent laymen (and me) - comprehensive, but not overly complex (the technology of making fissile material go bang in a big way is extremely sophisticated). It is full of all sorts of fascinating nuggets of information - I hadn't realised that the nuclear generators in submarines had to use weapons-grade uranium (95%+ pure, as opposed to nuclear power stations' about 5% pure), because it was the only way...

Short but informative
A reference book which does not delve into the exhausting details of the WMD technology but presents in a clear and easy to read text all the essential information. Of course the title is somehow misleading, as the book is not a manual for nuclear bomb producers. The strong point of the book is that it is not necessary for someone to have a PhD in Physics, Bilogy or Chemistry in order to understand the working principles of WMD.

I have read quite a lot on this subject so I almost did not buy it because I thought from a quickscan that I knew almost all this stuff and it would be too simple.However I certainly learnt much from it.
