Fantastic device - pick your Kindle!
Having been a little overwhelmed by the choices between all the new Kindles and which one to get, I ordered this new basic $79 Kindle first to take for a spin. So far, I like what I see. I also own a Kindle 3 so that's the only device I can really compare it to at this time (I think a comparison between other tablets and this Kindle is meaningless, this device is all about content and delivery):1. Form-factor - Compared to the Kindle 3, this Kindle feels more compact, lighter and easier to hold. My hands wrap around this better than K3. Reading books for a few hours at a stretch will be easier on this device compared to the K3. It is the lightest such device I have used compared to all previous Kindles and other tablets.2. Screen - I personally like the fact that there are no keys on the device and that keys come up on the screen when you need them. Delivers a better overall reading experience. However, navigating through the on-screen keyboard with the 5-way...

Facts to Consider when Buying This Kindle Instead of Others
First off, I received my new Kindle this morning. I previously owned the Kindle Keyboard, but actually really didn't like the keyboard or the way the buttons were pressed together. I'm not a fan of touch screens so I bought this one. There are a few things to know about this particular Kindle that can help you decide if it's right for you...Here is a list of things to know about this Kindle.1. You'll be using an onscreen keyboard with the 5-Way Controller. This is not a problem for setting up WiFi and a little writing but if you are an avid note-taker or do a lot of writing with your Kindle, you might want to opt for the Kindle Keyboard.2. NO AUDIO - If you are planning on listening to audiobooks, Mp3s, or Text to Speech on your Kindle, this is not the device for you. There is not even a headphone jack, so there is absolutely no audio support.3. 2GB! This device has 2GB of storage, which is half of all the others... if you seriously need...

The most compact Kindle yet. Extremely legible display, snappy performance
Customer Video Review Length:: 9:38 MinsI was thrilled to receive my new Kindle. I ordered it Sep 28, chose overnight shipping and it arrived (Sep 29) just a few minutes ago. Usually I use a device for a while before reviewing it. In this case, I felt it was important to do a quick review right away because if it can help you in your purchasing decision, so much the better. If you are a little perplexed with all the various Kindle models and are wondering if this Is the Kindle for you, here are a few questions for you to consider...1. Do you need text to speech capability or have the desire to listen to mp3's on your Kindle? If you can live without that, then proceed. This Kindle does not have a speaker thus is not capable of text to speech or playing sounds of any kind including mp3's.2. Is color important to you? This is not a color Kindle, it is gray-scale. If you are mostly wanting to read books then this will work for you exceedingly well. The e-ink screen...

"A writer of boundless confidence and bold scientific extrapolation" (New York Times) concludes his mindbending trilogy.

Webmind-the vast consciousness that spontaneously emerged from the infrastructure of the World Wide Web-has proven its worth to humanity by aiding in everything from curing cancer to easing international tensions. But the brass at the Pentagon see Webmind as a threat that needs to be eliminated.

Caitlin Decter-the once-blind sixteen-year-old math genius who discovered, and bonded with, Webmind-wants desperately to protect her friend. And if she doesn't act, everything-Webmind included-may come crashing down. Top to learn more

Decent conclusion to the series; but also the weakest book in the series
This was the third and final book in the WWW trilogy by Robert Sawyer. It was a fitting end to the series, but not as good as the previous two books. Some of the characters act very against their character and some things are put in the book just to make a statement on something (without adding to the story much). I listened to this on audio book and I highly recommend it. This is one of those series that is so well done on audio book that I think it is vastly better than reading the book on paper. You definitely need to read the previous two book to understand what happens in this book. The virtual entity Webmind has been discovered by the US government and they have tried, and failed, to shut Webmind down. With Webmind's existence out in the open the big question is, what next? Caitlin and her family are naturally drawn into the media frenzy surrounding Webmind. The real question facing humanity is basically this: Is Webmind really benevolent or should measures be...

I am glad that this is finally wrapped up
Sawyer has done an excellent job of reworking prior ideas revolving around artificial intelligence from his prior books and taking them in a whole new direction. The Webmind was created from "rogue" computer packets (those that do not have a time to live flag set) that have formed themselves into a thinking entity. Webmind was able to view humanity through the artificially corrected eye of Caitlan, a 16 year old Texas girl who had move to Canada with her family. In the wrapup of the trilogy, the government has become aware of the Webmind and performs a test to see whether they can contain or destroy it. Meanwhile Caitlan is coming of age with her friend Matt. The other main plotline revolves around the Chinese government attempting to close their firewall and isolate China from the Internet. This operation causes the Webmind to split becoming a weak primary entity and an "evil" other. This part reminded me of the Star Trek episode where Kirk was split into two...

Only the beginning and more wonders to come
Robert J. Sawyer's "www.Wake" opens up a few cans of worms and leaves us with a cliffhanger at the end so we can all speculate on what happens next. Without giving too much away, a brilliant but blind teenage girl is enlisted by a Japanese scientist for experimental eye surgery and when it is all done, a lot of interesting things occur. Meanwhile on the other side of the country there is a gorilla painting pictures of its caretaker and in China there is a suspicous avian flu outbreak that results in the Chinese government covering up some drastic action it took to deal with it. I expect Book Two will deal with these secondary issues in a bit more detail and find a way to link them to the main story.Sawyer's writing style is approachable even for those who are not big Sci-Fi readers. Certainly the science is there (and accurate) but his books tend to deal more with the culture of the day and the way the characters respond to that while the science flutters by in the...

Sawyers Best
Wake is thought provoking,a good read and an introduction to modern thought on human perception / pattern recognition. The side-play concerning the heroine and her father is not well done and raises more questions (such as why did her mother marry this bozo?)--however the concept of growing up with contrasting affecting by ones parents is a valid one.The plot is pure science fiction and points to a plausible future maybe 30 years from now. The reader should pause now and again to think abut the issues Sawyer brings up on modern thought / science.Wake held my interest to the end and is a kind of "feel-good" book. I can recommend it with out reservation

"One of the foremost science fiction writers of our generation"(SF Site) comes to Ace with a trilogy of the Web's awakening.

Caitlin Decter is young, pretty, feisty, a genius at math-and blind. Still, she can surf the net with the best of them, following its complex paths clearly in her mind. But Caitlin's brain long ago co-opted her primary visual cortex to help her navigate online. So when she receives an implant to restore her sight, instead of seeing reality, the landscape of the World Wide Web explodes into her consciousness, spreading out all around her in a riot of colors and shapes. While exploring this amazing realm, she discovers something-some other-lurking in the background. And it's getting more and more intelligent with each passing day... Top to learn more

Sawyer plays to his strengths
WWW: Wake has all the hallmarks of a great Sawyer novel: intriguing premise, educational bits of knowledge spread throughout, making you feel like you are reading a great Chricton novel or a very engaging textbook, loads of Canadian trivia, and, most importantly, three-dimensional characters that live in the mind's eye and are people you care about.Unlike most of his novels, where the main character is a middle-aged male Canadian intellectual with some sort of marital conflict, the star here is a 15-year old American math whiz who just happens to be blind and female. Another favorite Saywer novel, Factoring Humanity, also featured a female lead and the same sense of wonder and emotional depth is present here as well. Only one minor character comes off as a bit cliche during a conflict with Caitlin. I'll let you guess which one that is.There are at least three plotlines that intersect here and, while this initial volume is fairly benign, with one big exception,...

World Wide Exploration of Morality
The best thing about Robert J. Sawyer's books are that they are truly about something. This book isn't just some excuse to have the internet gain self-awareness ... instead, it's a deep analysis of what makes people (be they geek, bully, computer, or chimpanzee-bonobo hybrid) choose an ethical course over the alternative.WWW: WATCH is a middle book in the trilogy. In WWW: WAKE (the first book), blind teenager Caitlin Decter gained sight and discovered the existence of a developing consciousness in the World Wide Web. This Webmind, as she calls it, begins communicating with her ... and that's where the second book picks up. Caitlin has to come to terms with suddenly seeing a world that she's only known through touch while also dealling with the fallout from Webmind. Fortunately, she has help from her friends and family.Less fortunate is the fact that the American government perceives Webmind as a potential threat, especially when it gains the ability to almost...

WWW: Watch: Solid Second Novel in the Webmind Saga
WWW: Watch is the second novel of a trilogy about an artificial intelligence, or consciousness that emerges from the World Wide Web.In the previous novel , WWW: Wake, Catlin Decter, a brilliant 15 year old blind girl is given sight through experimental technology in the form of an implant that interprets visual signals correctly and allows her to see (in her left eye at least). Through this device she discovers a presence in the Web that starts to gain greater and greater cognitive abilities, which grows as the second novel progresses. She dubs it Webmind. In Watch, we watch as Webmind not only develops cognitive abilities exponentially, but through the help of Catlin begins to develop its sense of ethics and, without being too maudlin, an understanding of "the meaning of life." This novel is primarily about this development, along with government agencies trying to figure out how to shut Webmind down, fearing it will become so powerful it will destroy...

A Little Disappointing After the First Book!
Let me preface this review by saying that Sawyer is my favorite scifi writer today and that I found the first book in this trilogy to be excellent. However, much to my dismay this book was difficult to get through. Caitlin has recently gained site through an implant behind one of her eyes. Her new friend, the Webmind is starting to evolve. Meanwhile a group of government scientists have detected the Webmind and want to destroy it before it becomes too powerful to be destroyed.Caitlin eventually lets her parents know about the Webmind and they are convinced that it is someone on the Internet pulling a prank until Caitlin's father tests it out. Eventually they are convinced and are fascinated with the Webmind like it is an additional child.Overlayed on this tale is the story about Hobo, the intelligent chimp/bonabo crossbreed. Hobo starts to get violent towards the woman who is responsible for him and the scientists have to decide what to do with him...

Product Description

Mrs. Dolymaucher’s Daughters
Sadie Timmons lives in a quiet upper-class suburb outside London. Nothing happens in the village of Winton and Sadie likes it that way. Sadie lives a quiet life with her middle class parents - her Father Murray Timmons, once the priest at the local church, and her mother, Maude.
Sadie is a solicitor and works for a large law firm in London. She enjoys her job and her life. Sadie remains blissfully unaware that she is not attractive and therefore, doesn’t miss the attention she has never had. With her career on fast track, Sadie is free to focus on the things she loves most in her life; mainly her friendship with Cassandra and Dexter Morley and the object of her desire, Crispin Huntington the 3rd. Sadie’s obsession with Crispin knows no bounds. She spends many hours each night watching him through her binoculars from her bedroom. Until one day Crispin’s little brother Clifford observes, by accident, Sadie’s nightly antics. Delighted by his observation, young Clifford Huntington sees this as an easy opportunity to blackmail Sadie and earn some, much needed, fast cash.
While Sadie is trying to remove herself from the situation she has created, she fails to notice that she is also being watched. Mrs Dolymaucher, the creator of collectible porcelain dolls, stands six foot tall, has a square jaw and a heavy solid body, greasy gray hair and a thick German accent. She resides in the basement flat of the Huntington’s mansion. She has lived there since arriving in England soon after her daughter and husband were viciously murdered. Each year, on the anniversary of her daughter death - a girl disappears. It takes several years before Detective Fox Hunter begins to see a pattern unfold. Many years of questioning and searching don’t reveal the girl’s bodies or uncover any clues as to their whereabouts.
Each doll Mrs. Dolymaucher creators is perfectly life like in every way. Every year another doll, complete with birth certificate and a set of designer clothes, is launched. The new doll has the same birthday as all the rest – it is also the same birthday as Gretchen Dolymuacher, Mrs Dolymaucher’s deceased daughter.
Like Mrs. Dolymaucher, Sadie Timmons is creature of habit. She too does many of the same things at the same time each day. Mrs. Dolymaucher watches Sadie. Sadie watches Crispin. Boris Wainwright watches Crispin.
Will Sadie be her last and final victim? Will Sadie’s face match that of the final doll...What happens when the watcher is being watched?

Straight Talk From an NCO
This book is a delight to read. Its short but it's flavorful; salty but never vulgar. It gives good reasons to treat children like the little people that they are. I wish I had read this forty years ago, but I can help spread it around now, and maybe my grandchildren can benefit. The author reminds us that foibles are just a part of being human and urges parents to forgive themselves and lighten up, but he does it in a light hearted tongue-in-cheek way that makes you want to come back for more.

Funny and No-Nonsence
Very entertaining to read but chock full of good, straight-forward advice. You don't have to read through pages of superflous verbiage to get the information. The author did a great job of getting to the point with a no-holds barred approach but with the right amount of humor. If you are looking for a "just get to the point" book on parenting, I highly recommend this book.

Before Lively and Reynolds got together, Lively had been in a three year relationship with her Gossip Girl costar Penn Badgley. Do you think Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds buying real estate together is going to strengthen their relationship further. Reynolds and Lively both starred together in the superhero action film The Green Lantern. Prior to dating Lively, Reynolds was married to A-list celebrity Scarlett Johansson.

Currently, 2 out of every 3 Canadian households own the home they live in. The challenge for many Canadians is the cost of buying a home , which continues to rise. With the average Canadian house priced around $370,000, home buyers can put down as little as $18,500 (5% of purchase price) and pay less than $1,500 a month in mortgage payments. So should you buy a home now and take advantage of ultra-low interest rates, or should you wait until housing prices come down from their record levels. For Vancouver residents, waiting for housing prices to fall by 10% means saving more than $10,000 in interest payments over a 5-year period (assuming a 10% initial down payment).   But consider the impact of a 10% decline in Vancouver housing prices, which would bring the average house price down to $685,000.   We wanted to buy a new home several years ago but we ended up waiting more than 18 months before building our new house. Waiting to buy a home: Cons Housing prices may continue to rise.   In hot housing markets like Vancouver and Toronto, waiting to buy a home can seem like a losing proposition. Waiting to buy a home: Pros Housing prices may fall. There’s an argument to be made that prospective home buyers should buy now and take advantage of the low cost of borrowing that may not be available in a year or two.

Reportedly, Blake and Ryan are enjoying their lives outside of the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple and plan to live upstate rather than returning to Blake's Upper East Side pad. And although there were rumors that the stars were looking to buy a place on Fifth Avenue, it seems they opted for a more private location.

The truth is, that old beat up guitar sound better and played better than some of the other Hofner Senators in the store, all of which were double the price. If I saw that guitar on eBay I would have dismissed it for looking in bad condition, and I wouldn't have bought it on impulse because I can act fairly rationally when I'm looking at something online.
