Finest body/lens combo in the competition!
[Following is a reprint of my body only review. I placed a review of the lens at the end.]The Nikon D80, destined to replace the popular D70 series, is a great camera for Nikon fans who wish to upgrade from their D50s, 70s or 100s. It's also attractive enough to maybe get a few people to jump ship! Here's the highlights:1) 10.2 megapixel. A substantial upgrade from the 6mp of the older cameras, performance should be very comparable to the highly regarded D200 camera;2) 11-point AF system. Similar again to the D200 in performance (though not as easy to change);3) Large viewfinder (.94x magnification). Again, taken from the D200, this is a clear improvement over the previous cameras. Spec wise, this is also better than all the competition, even though other, personal preference factors need to be taken into consideration (such as layout of LCDs and focusing points).;4) 2.5" LCD. Not only is it larger, it can also be...

This will be one of the great ones! A home run by Nikon!
Obviously, I am enamored with the Nikon D80. As one who has extensively used the D100, D70s, and D200, I was curious as to how the D80 would "shake out" in comparison with these fine cameras. The answer is that it does very well indeed. The most obvious improvement in D80 over the D70s and D100 is the upgrade from 6.1 to 10.2 Megapixels--the same as its "Big Brother," the D200 This is not a major issue for many users, as a 6.1 MP image (uncropped) looks essentially exactly the same as a 10.2 MP image. However, if the user intends to crop images in post-processing, the larger amount of resolution becomes important--the more megapixels the more detail when images are cropped. Shooters of wildlife, for example, will appreciate the additional resolution of the D80, as it is often necessary to photograph wildlife at a distance and then crop the image to cause the subject to dominate the frame. The other very obvious D80 improvements are the larger viewfinder and...

Nikon hits this one out of the park
Since this camera just hit the streets less than 2 weeks ago, I obviously haven't had this for a super long time, but I moved to the D80 as an upgrade from the terrific D50, and the D80 takes care of every single minor nitpick I had with the D50, and then takes it even beyond that. Moreover, since I moved from the D50 and not a D70-series, I was thrilled that the D80 uses Secure Digital (SD) flash cards, which I used for not only my D50, but for my Casio EX-Z750 point and shoot as well.As with the D50, the D80 just feels terrific in my hand. I was concerned initially because the ergonomics of the grip have been ever so slightly modified (more like that of the D70s than the D50), and I really liked the feel of the D50. However, once I got the D80 and actually started using it and shooting with it, the concern evaporated quickly. The D80 is a complete success ergonomically... it feels solid and substantial without being excessively heavy. Nikon has really always excelled in...

Great little camera to step up from point & shoot
I bought this camera for my sister. She has taken amazing photos with a point and shoot and needed to step up to a DSLR. This was the cheapest nikon body on amazon at the time (refurbished from Cameta Camera). I currently shoot a D200 and the D60 doesn't have all the features I'm used to. However, it was everything I expected and takes beautiful photos. The lack of an auto focus motor does limit the camera, but the number of AF-S lenses available are continually growing. The ability to have a 10megapixel sensor DSLR amazes me. You can make HUGE prints from this camera that are pro quality (but the camera itself won't give you the skills of a pro photographer). This body is tiny. Sitting next to a larger p&s its only slightly larger. Only having 3 AF points takes away some ease of use you get with the higher end bodies but they do focus sharp and fast.My current favorite AF-S lenses for these non focus motor bodies would be #1...

D60 for an amateur
I'm not a professional by any means. I merely needed a good step up from a compact point-and-shoot camera.Every photographer has reached that ceiling of the p/s camera, and I wanted to be able to do more things and take better quality photos than I had been. I'm getting into wedding photography, and I needed something practical for that. A compact p/s camera just DOES NOT suffice.I'm really excited about this camera. Its more camera than I ever thought I would own--I just got interested in photography about 2 years ago, when I bought a $45 digital Polaroid. The pictures that I have taken with it so far have been great. I purchased the Nikon 18-55mm lens at the same time, and now I have purchased the Sigma 70-300mm to 'complete' my outfit. I'm like a kid at Christmas time--I can't put it down!Like I said, I'm no professional, I'm just an artist. I just enjoy exploring photography on my own and discovering things. Take it or leave it.

Outstanding Starter Camera
Looking over several cameras and choosing one for someone who has outgrown point and shoots, I came back to the Nikon D3000. By no means will this model blow away the seasoned photographer, however it does cover the basics and more. We picked it up and tried it out over the weekend.First time DSLR users will enjoy the Guide Mode. It literally walked us through different shoot scenarios via the fixed 3" LCD screen. An excellent tool, its step by step instructions allowed my niece to move from the operating booklet in no time. After a few more runs, I am sure that she will feel quite comfortable shooting in the manual mode. The quick shutter release was a nice surprise.Upon completing two days of shooting with the Nikon D3000, I walked away impressed. In manual mode, indoor shots were a balanced and perfect mix of shadow and color. As usual with shooting in low light, noise will make an appearance. However this system can be tweaked to deliver some outstanding...

Excellent first DSLR
My good old point-and-shoot camera (one of the Canon PowerShot series) had served me faithfully, but I was growing frustrated with its limitations. It seemed SO slow -- I was always missing great shots of my kids. The low-light performance was not particularly good. And I knew if I ever wanted to take more than basic family snapshots, I was going to need to bite the bullet and buy a DSLR. But they seemed so intimidating! After doing a ton of research online and trying out my sister-in-law's slightly older Nikon D40, I settled on the new D3000. And I love it! It really is easier to use than I could've imagined, and the shots I've gotten so far are amazing. I have no photographic training, but I am really delighted with the pictures I've been getting so far. I never could have imagined there would be SUCH a huge difference. I've actually gotten -sharp- pictures of my toddler in motion, rather than just kid-shaped blurs! I took it to a local park last night for a couple hours...

Super user friendly beginner camera with great AF system and image quality
Nikon D3000 is Nikon beginner / entry level camera. It replaces Nikon D60. There are three major upgrade of D3000 from D60. There are 11 Auto focus system with dynamic tracking and 3D tracking. This AF system is the same as Nikon mid-range/enthusiast camera, D90. Also, the LCD screen has been enlarged to 3 inches from 2.5 inches. However, the screen resolution remains the same at 230,000 dots. Also new is the Guide mode, this new mode is working as your tutor on basic photography. It helps you set up your camera, in the same time, it tells you about basic photography setting and concepts. Other than that, everything looks the same, buttons, placement, viewfinder and image quality/resolution.It is an average size for beginner DSLR camera. But if you are coming from compact camera, you might a bit surprise of the size. On the other hand, if you are coming from advanced DSLR cameras, then you will feel this camera is compact and light.Nikon D3000 has a thumb dial,...

So much more than meets the eye.
I eyed this camera for a long time before buying. I always had SLRs before but lately only owned super zoom point and shoots. (5 M pix). I wanted a little better resolution and a lot more flexibility and ability to control what the camera does as well as quickness, and smarts. This one has it all. Now after having gotten used to it, I love everything about it. For example, it has several different "themes" for the display and you can set the "Vari-program" modes to look different than the "P, S, A and M" modes so you can see at a glance if you're in "point and shoot" or "think about it" modes. The "Quick-Set" menu button makes it super fast to set the most commonly changed settings. I love the way you can set ISO to be "Auto" in the "P, S, A and M" modes but set a minimum shutter speed and max ISO and it will ramp up the ISO within those limits. So it keeps ISO set at 100 until correct exposure would require a speed slower than your min shutter speed setting and only then...

An Excellent Camera!
We bought this camera right before our honeymoon in the Caribbean... We had 2 other decent point-and-shoot cameras but decided to buy this D60 Gold SE for our special, "one-of-a-lifetime" trip anyway. It turned out one of the best decisions ever 'cause nobody wanted to miss shooting photos of those gorgeous beaches and landscapes and everything else in the Caribbean! Our photos look really nice with sharp detail, beautifull color shades, and well-balanced exposures. While I used its manual settings as I've used to with my other SLR Nikon (35mm film), my wife could use its auto program features as she does with her tiny P&S Canon. It's great to work with for both of us...A short note: I just bought a Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control and it worked perfectly right out of the box. There'd be more experiments with this little tool...

Very Nice Photos
I've had High end Nikon 35mm cameras for 25 years, so when I wanted to step up from the small digital point and shoots it was a natural choice. One of the nice things I found when I started using this digital camera was that I could go manual and set shutter speed or aperture the way I had with the 35's.I've had the D60 now for 6 months and have taken over 3,000 photos. Out of those I've had very few that were bad.The 18-55mm lens in the kit is a fine lens. You will out grow in time, but it is very usable to the new d60 owner.I will have to say that there are so many setting on the d60 that you can change, I had to pickup and extra book to figure them all out. I would recomend buying this book to help with all the things your new d60 can do.

Top of a Star-Studded field!
It's a great time to be buying a 10 megapixel SLR, as all the top manufacturer's have new, 5-star models. So let's examine: What do we want most? Great photos, a well made camera, and features that will let us achieve our photographic goals. The K10D delivers. All the top contenders will deliver excellent results that can be made into poster size prints with great color and detail. Although we can point so some shortcomings (like the poor performance of the Sony Alpha 100 at ISO 1600), image quality is something that is still in the eye of the beholder. However, features are features, and the K10D has loads. The first thing you'll notice is the solid feel in your hands. It feels robust, and the shutter has been tested to 100,000 shots (same as Canon's bigger brother 30D). But to this, we add something else not found in any other camera in the class: weather-proofing. The body contains 72 seals to help keep dust, dirt and moisture on the outside (the...

very good camera !
A million words have been written about this thing, and this is not an attempt at a comprehensive review, so look above or on dpreview-com for complete info.I looked at Canon, Nikon, Pentax and Sony DSLRs. The Sony makes sense if you already have a bag full of Minolta lenses, which I don't. Canon and Nikon put their image stabilization in the lens, which makes their 'good' lenses significantly more expensive. Canon EOS is not backward-compatible with their old FD lenses, of which I -do- have a bagful. Pentax is backward-compatible with all K-mount lenses made since the 1970s, and will even take 645 and 6x7 lenses, with adapters.Sooo, I set out to ease into DSLR ownership with a K100D, then started reading the reviews, and it was a bunch of little things that made me want the K10D. The viewfinder has an actual prism, not a mirror cage like cheaper cameras, the displays are backlit, and the low-res mode (1800 x 1200px) is exactly what I want for certain...

Innovative features rocket K10D to front ranks in prosumer DSLR race
The marriage of Pentax camera expertise, and Samsung's bottomless R&D war chest ("SamTax"), has spawned the great-leap-forward K10D DSLR that promises well-earned laudits for a camera maker inexorably squeezed by wealthier competitors. Pentax' first entry into the DSLR world (the oddly-named *istD), although a fine performer, failed to compete pricewise with comparable Canon or Nikon entries. The smaller and better market-positioned 6MP *istD-S (which I own) arrived too late to give the hugely successful Canon Rebel a serious run for its money; and Pentax eventually retrenched with cheaper penta-mirror products just to keep a foot in the US market (ironically, the digital Rebel series had cut costs from the start with a seldom-mentioned penta-mirror).The tradeoff for any low cost DSLR, as against the costlier pro models, was the substitution of menu-driven operations for the latter's simpler and faster buttons and dials -- a maddeningly tedious and unintuitive...
