Great Value, easy setup, heat NOT an issue
I purchased this system on Black Friday, and noticed shortly after that it was "under review" by Amazon. Several of the other reviews state that the unit overheats and malfunctions if the vent is blocked, and were considering that to be a defect. This system could very well be a popular first home theater receiver/amp, so for those of you who aren't familiar with these kinds of things, think of it this way- the main unit is a video/audio processor packaged in a metal box which ALSO contains the parts that power the center, fronts, and surround speakers. The speakers don't have power plugs, they're powered directly by that unit. In other words, imagine placing a 20-pound power supply in a metal box with your laptop. Get the idea? There's a reason it ships with a warning label which clearly states DO NOT BLOCK THE VENT. I have no doubt that shoehorning it into one of those cubbyhole-style stands or placing a shelf directly above it will cause problems.All that being...

Great Stereo, But I got Lemon.... and Amazon took care of me!
Bottom line is I like the receiver. The sound is quite pleasing. It has a sufficient number of HDMI inputs for my needs and met my 3D requirements.I did discover an already known issue (That I did not know about) with DirecTV and most any 3D Audio receiver and 3DTV, it doesn't work right out of the box. One ends up with a "split screen" much like a side by side PIP.It appears this is a problem of DirecTV's making but can be corrected using Samsung's 3D option located in the Content-3D menu, then selecting the icon that looks like the problem you are having, in my case a side-by-side image. This works but is only effective while watching the 3D program. It has to be reset each time when watching a DirecTV 3D program. 3D programing from my Samsung BD-6900 Blu Ray passes through the receiver without a problem.My S7300 is only one week old and I have had to order a replacement from Amazon.com. After listening to the receiver for anywhere from 5-30...

Heat causes intermittent sound loss
This setup is by far the best for the money. When I originally unpacked it and put it in the cabinet, the amp put out so much heat that the sound would go off for a few seconds after about 2 hours of play. I called Onkyo who said they never heard of such a thing and I should do a hard start(push power and vcr together) and if that didn't work I should drive the amp 30 miles to the nearest repair center. In the process of playing with the amp I pulled the cabinet away from the wall and pushed the amp to the back of its shelf so that I could get to the connections. Every time I did that, the intermittent sound loss stopped. I realized that the shelf above the amp did not block the amp vents when the amp was pushed to the back of the cabinet. I removed the shelf above the amp which gave the amp about 6 inches to vent the heat and from that time on there has been no sound loss and I have kept the amp running for 10 hours at a time. Better design than S5300
This model is basically the same as S5300, with extra features:1. Can up-convert all video inputs to 1080P and output through HDMI. S5300 can't do this.2. Comes with a setup mic for Audessy to set up speakers automatically.S5300 doesn't have it.3. Front Speaker is smaller than those of S5300. I hooked them up on wall they look better. The front speakers of S5300 are much bigger and the rear speakers are much smaller.4. Subwoofer is taller and narrower than that of S5300. To me that is better.5. Total weight is like 10lb less than S5300.It is about $100 more than S5300. You can go with S5300 for cheaper if you don't mind those points above.

Excellent HTIB. Great Sound for Apartments or Condos.
First off, I should say that I bought this from Newegg, since - at the time - Amazon had an estimated ship time of 1-2 months. I see they now have it back in stock for immediate delivery (at time of writing, anyway). Overall I will say that for the reduced price they have it at (less than $500) it's quite a bargain - and worth every penny.PACKAGING:I've included pictures of the packaging, since I assume that this doesn't really change much between either seller. Everything is packed and separated pretty solidly in thick styrofoam, the TX-SR680 receiver is located at the top, the subwoofer is at the bottom, and all speakers, accessories and cables are in between. There was some slight damage to the box in UPS shipping, but nothing out of the ordinary. Well designed home theater package for the price
I just received this system last week and spent the better part of the Labor Day weekend setting it all up along with my new projector and screen. I paired the speakers with the Sanus speaker mount system to hang the front, rear and center channels. Another reviewer has already detailed the differences between this model and the next cheaper model below so I won't go into that. I would say I think it is work the extra $100 or so to get this one over the S5300 and am glad I went that route for the extra features.It did not take long to unpack and set up into my entertainment center. I had already pre-wired my home theater room with 14/2 speaker wire to where all the speakers would go so set up went quickly. The auto setup for the speakers was a snap and the system sounds great. I have a satellite receiver (very old model with old connections only available) connected via composite cables and a PS3 for BD DVD/gaming via HDMI. The output is connected to an Optoma HD20...

Great sound. Unbeatable value
So far, this is probably the best home theater system for the price. So let's get started with the review.PRESENTATIONThe box is huge, so you know just by looking at it you're purchasing something serious. Despite the box arrived pretty damaged, the system itself was unharmed. The speakers are definitely sturdy, well-built and looks like quality ones, only the protective grids are made in plastic and look somewhat cheap. The receiver looks elegant, giving the sensation of being a lot more expensive. Subwoofer is big but not that much, so it can fit almost anywhere in the room. Installation is very easy since all speakers, speaker inputs and cables are color-coded, so it's very difficult to do it wrong.AUDIOOverall, my listening experience so far has been of pure joy. Heaven in a box - THX powerhouse
After 32 wonderful years of service from my stereo system, its day's are at an end. Purchashed back in my "Navy Days", I insisted on quality, with price not an object. Top-of-the-line Aiwa amp, pre-amp, and tuner coupled with B/W DM2/11 studio monitors, 12 band graphic equalizer, DBX dynamic range extender with surface noise eliminators, and you can understand my audiophile bliss for the good part of a quarter century. Good value, decent sound
This is probably one of the best "home theater in a box" setups you'll run across. The receiver is the 606 model which has been very well received by most reviewers. It will accept pretty much any type of input and output it via HDMI so you can cut down on the spaghetti-nest of wires. The speakers are pretty good for this price point. No, it won't put a high-end system to shame, but it will hold its own (and unusually surpass) pretty much anything in this price range.The sub is better than I expected. Good, solid bass. It's a down-firing setup which is nice if you have pets that like to mess with speakers.The receiver runs pretty hot, as is typical with Onkyo systems. Make sure there is lots of ventilation (i.e., don't put it into a closed media cabinet).It also includes stands for the front L/R speakers which is a nice touch, and adds to the overall value. It does not, however, come with a DVD player. But, that's a good thing - you're far better...

Great Home Theater Package
All in all I would have to say this is a great entry level home theater system. HDMI audio/video throughput, component upscaling with HDMI output, ipod dock, universal remote, 7.1 with 2 nice speaker stands, 10" subwoofer, etc...Since all of my hookups were HDMI / component, setting up the receiver using the default settings was pretty simple. It took about 1 hours to unpackage everything and another hour to carefully set it up. Pretty staight forward though.Setting up the remote took another 30 minutes or so... Figuring out how to put the receiver in "standby" mode so I could use the TV without turning on the tuner took a little reading and messing around, but I figured it out.At first, I got a few intermittent static lines that would show up when switching between TV / Game / Standby, but it cleared up after a couple of days and I haven't seen it since.The subwoofer produces great bass. Perspective from a standard-def tv owner
I would say perfect for movies and games, pretty solid for music. Music sounds great at higher volumes but if you're an apartment dweller like myself and not a complete jerk you won't always be able to crank it up high enough to fully enjoy it. Mid volume sounds good. Low volumes the sounds get jumbled and a bit muddy.I wanted a receiver that would be fairly future proof but given my current constraints (non-HD TV but has component inputs) would still do the trick. This setup works like a champ. The 2 fronts and center channel are noticeably heavier than the rear speakers and can deliver better performance (good for stereo music listening). The on-screen display for controlling your ipod and setting up the system only outputs on HDMI but it's hardly a deal breaker if you're waiting to get an hdtv since the on-receiver display works just fine for setting it up. I live in an apartment and can pretty well see my ipod from the couch so I'm not to worried about on-screen...

I was going to purchase the Bose/ Onkyo system at BJ's for the same amount of money.However, the wall mounts fot the bose speakers were 29.00 WHAT? So I looked around and went to a few places and auditioned some systems. And found the Onkyo to be far superior to the Bose system in terms of quality, Price, and yes Sound.As with all bose products, I think Bose is Way overpriced for what they offer.Their arrogance is even more expensive when you talk with them on the phone.I installed this system in my 35x35x12 open space living room and What a sound.I think the sub woofer is far better than the Bose as well.I purchased the 8400 series, in that, the lower end systems have thermal problems.I've had this in place now for 3 weeks and I think it's top notch.Yes I purchased the speaker mounts 4 for 12.00.They're speakermounts... I'm not going to hang off them.It looks good and the sound quality is excellent for the price.Easy...

I have had this system for a month now and absolutley love it. With the ability to work over my home network i can do many things and liten directly from my pc. I love the amount of sound i get from this system. I would definately recommended it.The only con i can speak of is they dont actually make a speaker stand for the speakers but i made the Onkyo AS-140's work like a champ.

Great receiver
I bought this from abcWarehouse, sorry amazon! I will have to say the receiver is awesome! I like that you can individually dial in all the speakers. I highly recommend dialing in the receiver yourself instead of the mic. It puts out great highs and deep rich bass even at very low volume. The features are great I use pandora free version all the time! The only thing I suggest is that you puschase a separate center channel as the one that comes with it is very cheaply made and you cant even hear it when watching a movie, I hooked an old bose bookshelf speaker to it tempararely, and wow what a MAJOR differance! So today I ordered the Pioneer SP-C21 130 Watt RMS 2-Way Speaker from Amazon. Cant wait to get it. The rest of the speakers are great!
